Dior Rouge Dior Lipstick ($35.00 for 0.12 oz.) was recently relaunched, and part of the range now includes several matte shades. On top of the permanent range of 50 shades, the brand also released a few limited edition, pastel shades. They sold quite quickly through Dior’s website, but I found them on Selfridge’s and bought them. Only one of the four shades below performed decently when compared to what you’d want in a typical lipstick, but like something out of a fantasy novel, Dior says that the formula “provides 16 [hours] of comfort with no dry lips or colour streaking.” The formula is also supposed to be pigmented and hydrating. I did not get anywhere near 16 hours of wear with any of the four shades, unfortunately! The pigmentation varied from semi-opaque to mostly opaque, but the texture was unforgiving and prone to catching on any and every imperfection along with settling into lip lines.

Dior Tender Matte (340) Rouge Dior Lipstick ($35.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a light-medium peachy-orange with warm undertones and a satin finish. It had semi-opaque color payoff, but the texture emphasized lip lines and imperfections, while color gathered in my lip lines as well. There was some slip, so it didn’t drag or feel uncomfortable to apply or to wear, but it lasted for three and a half hours on me. It was neither drying nor hydrating on me. KVD Beauty Noble (DC, $21.00) is lighter, less glossy (95% similar). Sephora Peach Tart (LE, $14.00) is darker, less glossy (90% similar). Tarte Pink Sands (LE, $21.00) is darker, cooler, glossier (90% similar). MAC Close Contact (LE, $19.00) is warmer (90% similar). MAC Antonio's Girls (LE, $19.00) is darker (90% similar). Marc Jacobs Beauty Pout (142) (LE, $30.00) is lighter, cooler (90% similar). Milani Adore (LE, $8.99) is darker, warmer (90% similar). ColourPop Ingenue (LE, $9.00) is darker, cooler (90% similar). Maybelline Barely Bloomed (700) (P, $7.49) is lighter, glossier (95% similar). Urban Decay Unicorn (DC, $18.00) is darker (95% similar). Tarte Namaste (P, $20.00) is darker, warmer (90% similar). Anastasia Pure Hollywood (P, $20.00) is darker, warmer (85% similar). NYX Nude (P, $6.00) is cooler (85% similar). Bite Beauty Leche (P, $24.00) is more shimmery, darker, glossier (80% similar). Givenchy Beige Plume (102) (P, $36.00) is darker (80% similar). Bite Beauty Leche (DC, $24.00) is darker (80% similar). Tom Ford Beauty First Time (09) (LE, $55.00) is darker (80% similar). NARS Get Off (P, $27.00) is darker (80% similar). ColourPop Button (LE, $7.00) is darker (80% similar). Bite Beauty Amaretto (DC, $24.00) is darker (80% similar). Dior Cloudy Matte (380) Rouge Dior Lipstick ($35.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a light-medium lavender with cool undertones and a natural finish. It had good color coverage, which applied fairly evenly, but some of the color pulled into lip lines due to a more emollient consistency of the formula. I would not call this matte, as there was a definite shine to it. The color lasted for four and a half hours, and it was neither drying nor hydrating. This was the best of the Pastel Mattes, as it had the most even coverage; the cooler undertone of it made it harder to dupe. MAC Love & Cherished (P, $19.00) is lighter, warmer (85% similar). MAC Evening Buzz (LE, $19.00) is darker (85% similar). MAC Flatter Me Fierce (LE, $19.00) is darker, cooler (90% similar). NYX Lavender (P, $6.00) is lighter, glossier (85% similar). KVD Beauty Coven (DC, $21.00) is lighter, warmer (85% similar). MAC Galaxy Grey (DC, $21.00) is darker, more muted (80% similar). Anastasia Clover (P, $20.00) is darker, less glossy (80% similar). Make Up For Ever C502 (DC, $22.00) is darker, more muted (80% similar). LORAC Brunch Queen (LE, $17.00) is warmer (80% similar). KVD Beauty Zero (LE, $21.00) is darker, more muted, warmer (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Dior Sunny Matte (610) Rouge Dior Lipstick ($35.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a bright, sunshine yellow with strong, warm undertones and a satin sheen. It had medium color coverage, and like Clover Matte, was streaky, uneven, and emphasized every lip line and imperfection I had on my lips. It was moderately slippery, so it moved around a lot on the lips, and the photo is of the best case scenario but the moment I pressed my lips together, it fell apart. The color wore for four and a half hours and was non-drying. MAC St Marks Yellow (LE, $19.00) is more shimmery, lighter, less pigmented (90% similar). Anastasia Primary #4 (Vol. 1) (PiP, ) is darker (90% similar). MAC Yellow You Dare (LE, $19.00) is more pigmented (95% similar). MAC Gold Xixi (P, $19.00) is more muted, glossier (90% similar). NYX Citron (P, $6.00) is warmer, glossier (90% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Dior Clover Matte (400) Rouge Dior Lipstick ($35.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a medium green with cooler undertones and a natural sheen. It had medium coverage with a moderately slippery texture–and that showed heavily in the application, as the color found its way into every lip line and crevice on my lips. It was streaky, uneven, and unforgiving. The color wore for four hours and left a bluish stain behind, and it was non-drying. Make Up For Ever C601 (DC, $22.00) is lighter, brighter, better quality (95% similar). Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Whatever (DC, $17.00) is more shimmery, darker, warmer (85% similar). ColourPop Charm (LE, $7.00) is lighter, warmer, better quality (85% similar). Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Cosplay (DC, $18.00) is darker, better quality, glossier (85% similar). KVD Beauty Plan 9 (DC, $21.00) is darker, warmer, better quality (80% similar). NYX Risque (P, $6.00) is more shimmery, darker, cooler (80% similar). I would not buy these funky colors. I bought two of the permanent shades. I wish you test out the permanent shades and tell us what you think. I like Dior lipsticks actually more than Tom Ford.

Stacey Avatar

You are wonderful. No apologies needed. I am just expressing my thoughts. I read your blog everyday, but I don’t comment as much as before. Different priorities in my life.

Katherine T. Avatar

Christine, no need to apologize. I think it’s great you are reviewing these “funky colors”. I don’t wear these colors either, but it’s important for potential customers to know they are paying $ 35 (or more) for D/F rated lipsticks, and the fact that they are selling out quickly means a lot of people are probably buying without knowing that, unless they see your swatches/reviews first

Christine Avatar

Sometimes I am puzzled by how fast something like a green lipstick by Dior sells out, because I feel like people who are wearing non-traditional shades have found go-to options in other brands (that have already released ’em), so who is the customer for Dior’s take on green? Yellow? Dior only had them on their website, and I don’t even think they announced it via email (I didn’t receive anything, at least), but they did show some on their Instagram – by the time I saw them on Dior’s site, only two shades were even visible!

When I think of Dior’s traditional customer base (more mature, wealthier), I don’t see them buying much green lipstick. And if I were to buy a green lipstick, I wouldn’t pay $ 35 for one, as I wouldn’t wear it often, so I would go to NYX, ColourPop, etc. My guess is that Dior is trying to look hip/edgy by launching some non-traditional colors on website/ Instagram, to appeal to a younger customer base, and they only produced a very, very limited quantity (knowing they won’t sell well), so that’s why it’s selling out so quickly, and of course, selling out quickly also makes it appear like a super hot item

Sarah Avatar

Wow, Clover Matte looks stunning with the eyeshadow look! I honestly can’t wait for the Studio 1400 reviews–Donna looks very pigmented!

On another note, I’m shocked by how poorly these performed! If I’m paying this much for a lipstick compared to what I can get at the drugstore or from indie brands, I expect at least a B. Oh well, better to spend my money elsewhere. Thanks for the review, Christine!

Tanya Avatar

I’m sorry, Dior, but to produce a $35 lipstick that performs like $1 kiddie makeup from a dollar store, is just unacceptable and shameful, IMO.

Makura Avatar

Completely off topic, but how do you get your Colourpop shadows on the lids and crease so pigmented and blended so nicely? I struggle with them unless it’s a pop of color for a halo eye. TIA

Lulle Avatar

On the one hand I think it’s great that a high-end, department store brand like Dior acknowledges the existence of non-traditional lipstick shades – it was quite daring of them when you think who their loyal customers are-, but on the other hand they did such a poor job with the quality of these shades that it ruins the experiment… Dior CAN do great lipstick, that’s probably what they’re best at, so seeing these streaky shades makes me sad.

julia Avatar

I’m curious as to who Dior would even market these to? The clentele that would likely wear these more uncoventional colours would probably go with a niche or indie brand and their regular clientele would swatch and play with them in store but not actually buy them. I mean there’s shaking up your image and then there’s this haha. Looking forward to your reviews on the other shades!

Emma Avatar

This is not at all what I expect from Dior… I thought they learned from that Smeraldo disaster? Plus, this is not quite what I’d call “fall”.

Get your life right, Dior!

Thank god we have those gorgeous eyes to look at. These are simply dreadful, and we’ll be puzzling over why D did these for days. Truly an unexpected departure, one that ran off the runway, crashed, and burned. I really don’t get it. Their target market has been duly noted. The target market for these, well, they’ve already gone for better choices at CP or Nyx, where they could get a slew for the price of one Dior. This is baffling….bafflingly bad.

Sometimes I wonder how a line like this comes to be / could be allowed to happen. Like, maybe this is a first-ever project for a new product manager, for whom the lesson would be to get engaged on formulation. Or, when a brand has two products in a release so similar they are dupes for one another — perhaps the product committee couldn’t agree so they just went with both. Or, the MAC Selena debacle where maybe someone didn’t tell the IT department it had a highly promoted, LE product about to launch (and in that case, a simple apology would have helped its reputation and not just ‘due to the passion…’). Etc. But for likes of MAC and Dior someone up the chain should be watching out for the brand and not let the worst products or launches happen. Point of view of one.

It’s unfortunate that in an effort to be trendy they really missed the mark on these lipsticks. I’ve seen NYX lipsticks that perform better (the Macaron collection to be exact!). I think a sophisticated brand like Dior should stick to what they know since this probably won’t appeal to their target market.

Mariah Avatar

These look so DRY! I’ve seen you try so many more fun color lipsticks on you that looked more soft and smooth. Sad that these come from a high end company like Dior.
