Amethyst

Viseart Amethyst Theory Palette ($45.00 for 0.42 oz.) includes six eyeshadows–three matte, three shimmer–in a mix of pink, mauve, and purple. I was surprised that the mattes were less pigmented than past palettes, though they were fairly buildable. The texture of the first two matte eyeshadows was looser and dustier, while the third shade was better and more buildable/blendable (than it looked). The shimmery shades were better but still not quite as good as past Viseart eyeshadows have been in my experience.

Amethyst #1

Amethyst #1 is a pale, muted pink with a matte finish. It had medium pigmentation, which was somewhat buildable to semi-opaque coverage, with a soft, lightly dusty texture (which made it prone to sheering out, and I suspect that was why I couldn’t get full coverage out of it). It seemed thinner than other Viseart mattes I’ve tried. This shade lasted for seven hours before fading noticeably.

The eyeshadow formula is supposed to be "pigment[ed]" with "smooth and even application" that is "long-lasting." The matte shades are typically semi-opaque to opaque but buildable with soft, velvety textures that can sometimes be a little powdery or slightly firm, depending on the shade. I find that the mattes are often best suited to someone who likes control over pigmentation and may prefer to build up color; they regularly perform better in practice than just swatched on the arm as well.

The shimmer shades range from satin to metallic, and the more metallic shades tend to feel creamier to the touch, while the satin ones have a fine pearl to them that looks almost melted on the lid once blended out. Both the mattes and shimmers are blendable and easy to work with. Most of Viseart's eyeshadows wear between seven and nine hours on me.

Grenache

Amethyst #2 is a dusty, medium mauve with neutral-to-warm undertones and a matte finish. It had semi-sheer pigmentation in one layer, though it was buildable to mostly opaque coverage with two to three layers (better over a primer). The consistency was drier and more loosely packed in the pan, and I found it messier to work with in the pan (a lot of excess powder kicked up, even when I used very soft brushes) and more prone to fallout on the lid as well. The color started to fade after seven hours of wear.

Mulberry (Amethyst #3)

Amethyst #3 is a medium-dark eggplant purple with subtle, warm undertones and a semi-matte finish. The texture was drier, though it was not as loosely packed as the other shades, so it didn’t kickup as much powder in the pan when I used it. I also felt like it built up better and was easier to work with. This was a shade where it applied better in practice (on the lid) than just swatched, perhaps the smaller area or the more gradual building helped. It had medium coverage, which was buildable to opaque pigmentation with two to three layers. It wore well for eight hours before fading on me.

Pink Quartz (Amethyst #4)

Amethyst #4 is a soft pink with subtle, warm undertones and a metallic sheen. It was richly pigmented and had a smooth, soft but not dusty texture. The eyeshadow was easy to apply to the lid and blend out without losing intensity or coverage. This shade lasted for eight and a half hours on me.

Sterling (Amethyst #5)

Amethyst #5 is a medium-dark mauve with warm, brown undertones and a metallic sheen paired with a bit of sparkle. The eyeshadow seemed slightly looser in the press, so it was applied best by patting and pressing the eyeshadow onto the lid rather than sweeping. Once it was pressed into place, I had no issues blending out the edges. It had opaque, true-to-pan coverage that lasted nicely for eight hours on me.

Amethyst #6

Amethyst #6 is a medium-dark purple with subtle, cooler undertones and a metallic sheen. It had good pigmentation–just a smidgen shy of full coverage–that was easily bolstered to opaque coverage with a touch more product layered on top. The eyeshadow was slightly firmer in the pan but not difficult to use or blend out. This shade wore well for eight and a half hours before fading.

You rated this a lot higher than I would my palette. My shimmers were Fall Out City! The mattes applied on me better than they swatched though. The look did last all day – minus the constant fall out. But amethyst? Please Viseart, my palette is nothing more than a sad extremely muted plum palette. Can you tell I’m really disappointed?! My palette is a C- at best.

Nancy T Avatar

Oh boy. I’m having a hard time deciding whether I should get this or not. I’m a purple freak, and 4 out of the 5 shades that I love reviewed well. I could probably very easily dupe this one down the line, but that would mean opening up at least 3-4 different palettes or singles! I’m likely to spring for this when Muse has their next twofer sale.

Jenn Alexander Avatar

This is so disappointing that the mattes underperformed that badly. I usually adore viseart’a matte formula. I adore the shimmers but with half the palette performing badly this is going to be the first viseart eyeshadow palette I pass on. Hopefully nuance performs better.

CoralBunny Avatar

I purchased nuance and it performed about the same for me. It was really disappointing. Viseart is hyped by so many people…maybe it was just these new palettes. Don’t know if I will purchase this brand again.

Marieke Avatar

I was going to buy this if you gave it an A. Saving money now, although I’m quite disappointed. The fifth (or second Shimmer) shade is incredibly pretty!

Deborah S. Avatar

I could tell from the swatches that this was not going to be as nice as previous Viseart palettes. I hope this isn’t a trend in their products as they have been so reliable before. Having said that, I did just buy both of these new Theory palettes. I can’t resist a lavender/pink/purple shadow, kind of the same as green shadows for me. Never met a green or purple I didn’t love. The Nuance palette I hope will score better. I had promised myself that I wouldn’t purchase until your review as some of the swatches were “iffy”, but the Sephora sale happened and I decided to take a chance. I will work with it and I think it will be okay. I mean a Viseart shadow with a score of D+ is still better than a lot of other shadows, IMHO.

Christine Avatar

Keep us posted on how you like your new palettes, Deborah! I’d highly recommend using a good primer with the Amethyst palette for sure. A D+ Viseart eyeshadow (by my rating system) is really comparable to any other eyeshadow I’ve rated a D+, actually.

Deborah S. Avatar

So, I received my Sephora order today. I was actually quite shocked that I received it so quickly given the volume of sales at this time but it arrived and while I haven’t had a chance to work with it past swatching on my hand and arm, I am pretty disappointed in both palettes. I do think the Nuance is a little better but Amethyst is really not swatching well and the colors are very different from both the swatches on the blog here and what I saw on Sephora. I had to check twice as I thought they had sent me the wrong palette but the packaging says it is Amethyst so I don’t know. Only shade #6 looks like the picture so my monitor must be way off although I have not noticed this in other colored products that I have purchased. Very strange. I will keep them and try and work with primers to see if I can get decent looks out of them. Thank you, Christine.

Katherine T. Avatar

Wow, based on initial swatches, I was expecting a much worse score. Love the colors here! Mine is supposed to be coming in the mail today, hope it swatches decent/well

Katherine T. Avatar

Christine, I got my palette today! I’ve only swatched on my bare arms, #1 was kind of weak, but #2 and #3 swatched much better than yours and looked buildable with 2 swipes, and #4, #5, and #6 were great, gorgeous!! I haven’t tested on my oily lids yet, but I’m very happy with my swatches.

Christine Avatar

I hope your experience with it is better than mine, Kirsten! I think the mattes are workable, but it’s one of the few instances where I felt like an eyeshadow primer was necessary for better application (not just improving wear) with respect to Viseart eyeshadows.

Kirsten Avatar

The first company to put out a good purple palette will wow the beauty world. I always use primer anyway, because of oily lids, but I’m still a little sad that I won’t get to experience the Viseart amazingness.

kjh Avatar

Everyone wanted to love it…and we expect better from Viseart. Suppose that all brands are entitled to a goof, but it had better not signal a trend. It happens with dogs. Some newish breed becomes real popular, and for numerous reason ( in their case, mostly too much inbreeding) the quality tanks and the bad genes are magnified. Think Shar Peis. With color cosmetics, increased popularity and more outlets worldwide, production demands can cause uneven mfg and corners cut. Say it ain’t so! We’d be devastated.

CoralBunny Avatar

I had issues with this palette too. I discovered that it was not pigmented and it was not long-wearing. However, I was told that it was the way I applied (I tried several different approaches, but nothing changed the way it looked). I am very disappointed with this palette. But, I am glad it wasn’t just me who had issues with it.

Marie-Estelle Avatar

WHYYY?? ??

Purple might be my favorite eyeshadow colour… And the metallics are so promising!

I am so disappointed! Even though I need to use a primer each time I apply eyeshadow… I am now more than hesitant. Especially when one’s is used to viseart’s mattes.

Allison F Avatar

Ok, call me crazy, but I love this palette. I did think the shimmers were much better than the mattes. It’s an A for me. I also received Nuance, but haven’t tried it yet.

Mara Avatar

I wear mine, amethyst and nuance, everyday with and without primer. So far I love them. The mattes take 2-3 layers of building but for me they build and blend just fine. The Nuance blends into my skin tones so much it’s a little too subtle but still an easy monochromatic look. I have oily eyelids so shadows stick to them. The Minx and Petit Pro are still the best overall small palettes from Viseart.

Isa Avatar

The justification for Viseart’s (very high) prices have always been that the shadows are phenomenal quality! That doesn’t really seem to be the case here! The colours are pretty and the look you created is very pretty too, but I think I will pass.

Ameerah Avatar

Mine just came today. This is my first Viseart purchase. Kinda bummed it didn’t perform as good as I had hoped. It swatched okay with my fingers, but I want to try it out once and if I don’t like how it applies with brushes on my lids, I might return it.

Ameerah Avatar

I thought I’d let you know what I thought about it Christine.I used all the shades today, Mostly used Mac and Sephora eyeshadow brushes, with the smashbox 24 hour primer. It worked really well for me. Applied well and blended very smoothly. I don’t own any other shadows from this brand so, I couldn’t compare them, but so far, I am really liking this palette. I think the fact that the shimmery shades were not as shimmery worked out to my advantage, as I easily overdo shimmers. So, I did have to build it up. 😀

Anne Avatar

This is why I buy singles. I need my mattes to be nothing less than excellent. What a shame, but I’m not as surprised as I’m sure a lot of other people are. When I find purple and berry mattes in whatever shade that work, I buy them without batting an eye because they are so darn hard to find. I don’t know why. But they are. I can’t tell you how many bushes I have beaten over the years to get my little gems.

Summer_Breeze Avatar

I just received mine today. I am totally underwhelmed! The colors are muted, without much life or vivacity. I like all the shimmers on the right, but the mattes on the left are not quite up to par. I am usually a Viseart fan, but this is going back.

Chantelle Avatar

It makes me feel a lot better knowing that the rest of you struggle finding good purple mattes, I always thought it was just me 🙂

Nuance arrived just a few days ago so I’ve only used it once but so far I’m really happy with it. I bought it together with Cashmere (based on Christine’s recommendation) during the Muse Beauty twofer deal and I have to say, I want to buy all the other Viseart palettes now too.

Lana Avatar

Super bummed about the performance of the palette.. I don’t really have a big eye shadow collection and am planning on investing in some of these Viseart palettes (the neutral mattes has been on my wishlist for a long time). I really want to try their other palettes as well.. in terms of the performance of the purples should I opt for the matte purples in the dark mattes palette or the Amethyst palette? Or would it be better if I bought the matte purple singles separately from other brands like Inglot and just stick with buying the one neutral matte palette from Viseart?

Bonnie Avatar

I love the shimmers and haven’t had any issues with fallout. The lightest matte is workable for me, I had the most difficulty with the dark shade – #3. I bought this on the Muse twofer sale and if I had it to do over, I’d still purchase. Enjoy the packaging – sturdy and slim, no wasted space.

Cheryle Breaux Avatar

I have been contemplating buying a Viseart palette for awhile now and when I saw the Amethyst palette, I bit the bullet and got on the pre-order list. I was so excited having heard so much hype over this brand and loving purples and mauves. Let me tell you, I am so disappointed and angry that I didn’t wait for it to come to Sephora so that a return would be easy. I used them on Friday for the first time and while the colors are stunning (I am referring mainly to the shimmers because the mattes are nothing special in color), the wear time was just awful. I used an eye primer as I do with all shadows and when I looked in the mirror at about the 5 hour mark, I was stunned at how faded they were. I found the mattes to be just ok as far as blending and color but those shimmers hardly stuck around at all. I don’t know Muse’s return policy but if it’s easy enough, I think these will go back. I mean, I paid $45 for shadows that have the staying power of a drugstore shadow. I will try them one more time but idk. For that kind of money, you should not have to work this hard to get longevity.
