Too Faced When In Doubt La Matte Color Drenched Matte Lipstick
Too Faced When In Doubt La Matte Color Drenched Matte Lipstick ($22.00 for 0.11 oz.) is a light-medium, rosy beige with a semi-matte finish. It had mostly opaque coverage with a drier, draggy texture that applied evenly but looked dry and highlighted the natural texture of the lips. The color started to gather in lip lines after a half hour, and by two hours of wear, the color itself looked uneven in places. It lasted for three hours in total and was moderately drying. Too Faced Sorry Not Sorry La Matte Color Drenched Matte Lipstick ($22.00 for 0.11 oz.) is a light-medium peach with warm undertones and a semi-matte finish. It had a medium-thick texture that had a dryness to it that reminded me of chalk, and it was extremely unforgiving as it emphasized lip lines and immediately pulled into them. The color looked “cracked” as soon as smiled–much as they can with matte liquid lipsticks–and was all-around difficult to make it look decent. I would recommend a lip primer and/or lip liner with this one. It lasted for two and a half hours on me and was lightly drying (wore it twice in a row to test hydration). ColourPop Echo Park (P, $7.00) is darker, warmer, glossier (95% similar). NYX Daydream (P, $6.00) is darker, brighter (95% similar). Maybelline Daringly Nude (P, $7.99) is lighter, glossier (95% similar). ColourPop Knotty (LE, $6.50) is lighter (95% similar). Tarte Get It! (P, $20.00) is darker, warmer (90% similar). Too Faced The New Black La Matte Color Drenched Matte Lipstick ($22.00 for 0.11 oz.) is a muted, medium orange with warm, reddish tones and a satin finish. It had semi-opaque coverage with a creamier texture that was hard to apply evenly–the color would bunch up and clump in places. The color balled up over the three and a half hours it lasted. It was lightly drying. Charlotte Tilbury Sexy Sienna (P, $37.00) is lighter, more muted (85% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Misbehaved (49) (P, $57.00) is more shimmery, lighter, glossier (90% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Twist of Fate (LE, $57.00) is more shimmery, glossier (90% similar). Tom Ford Beauty James (P, $36.00) is more shimmery, glossier (90% similar). MAC Tropic Tonic (P, $19.00) is brighter, cooler, glossier (85% similar). ColourPop Creme Fresh (P, $10.00) is warmer (80% similar). Too Faced Troublemaker La Matte Color Drenched Matte Lipstick ($22.00 for 0.11 oz.) is a bright, medium fuchsia pink with cool, blue undertones and a semi-matte finish. This was the best-applying shade in the entire range, as the color went on evenly and didn’t drag or tug. It lasted for four and a half hours on me and left a very subtle stain behind (which is, frankly, less than the average fuchsia-hued shade, matte or not). It was non-drying. Urban Decay Menace (DC, $18.00) is brighter, glossier (95% similar). NARS 413 BLKR (P, $27.00) is more shimmery (95% similar). Urban Decay Menace (P, $18.00) is less glossy (95% similar). MAC Tsk Tsk! (LE, $19.00) is less shimmery, brighter (90% similar). MAC Full Fuchsia (P, $19.00) is more shimmery, darker, glossier (90% similar). Guerlain #61 (P, $33.00) is less shimmery, warmer, glossier (90% similar). Patrick Ta She's Hard to Get (P, $32.00) is less shimmery, darker (90% similar). Urban Decay Menace (DC, $22.00) is cooler (90% similar). MAC Girl About Town (P, $19.00) is darker, glossier (90% similar). NARS Let's Go Crazy (P, $27.00) is darker, warmer (90% similar). ColourPop Pin Wheel (LE, $6.50) is darker (90% similar). MAC No Faux Pas (LE, $19.00) is brighter (90% similar). Bite Beauty Pink Lady (DC, $24.00) is lighter, warmer, glossier (90% similar). ColourPop Jasmine (LE, $10.00) is less shimmery, warmer (90% similar). Bite Beauty Framboise (DC, $24.00) is brighter, warmer, glossier (90% similar). FORMULA OVERVIEW | Too Faced La Matte Color Drenched Matte Lipstick ($22.00 for 0.11 oz.) is supposed to be the “most comfortable matte lipstick” with a “high-pigment formula” that is “creamy” and “softens” against the skin,” while the formula is “non-drying.” There have been a lot of modern takes on the matte lipstick that have forsaken the days of dry, firm, tugging mattes in lieu of creamier, more velvety-feeling mattes that have a smidgen of sheen but are infinitely easier to apply and wear–these are somewhere in-between. They’re not the worst mattes I’ve tried, but half or more of the formula tugs, drags, and clumps up. They had a really dry, chalky consistency to me; thick and somewhat heavy. Some shades emphasized every flaw (and some I honestly didn’t know I had at all) on my lips. They were non-drying to moderately drying. The wear time was four to six hours, which is more in line with average across a typical shade range, but I had issues with color separating into lip lines and fading unevenly. The thicker texture gets harder to smooth back out and is extremely unforgiving to reapply over.

This is so disappointing considering how much I love the la creme lipsticks! I think I might try out colourpop’s satin lipstick since it seems sort of matte but not too drying.
These are soooo unlike the La Cremes in every way 🙁
Sounds like most of these should be named “Yikes” instead.
Pity, I love these kinds of nude shades.
Haha!
I wasn’t too impressed with the sneak peak of the swatches, especially the lighter shades, and my suspicions were confirmed. This is what gives matte lipsticks a bad name
Right? They can do better 🙁
I didn’t learn about these lipsticks until a few days before they launched. Not liking them. I guess I’m tired of seeing the same color scheme of lipsticks being released all the time. These remind me of the new Tarte lip splash lipsticks (not entirely alike, but enough to remind me of them). Pass!
P.S. Thanks for your reviews, Christine.
No problem, Maria!
Too bad I’m not much of a “pink” person, so the best performing one in this grouping just isn’t my cup of java. I LOVE though, The New Black for a hysterically funny, but not very nice reason! LoL! But the bunching up would be problematic. Everything bunches up where my lips meet anyways, not sure why? And I do wear lip primer and lip liner?
It is a well-named shade 😉
I know for me, if my lips are at all less than 100%, then the inner area of my lips will be more “ragged” or textured.
Troublemaker is nice!
One out of three!
Geez don’t they get people to test these before they put them out? Lipstick like chalk sounds amazing…
I don’t know 🙁
Wow..grim looking mattes and I knows you take good care of your lips. What a difference between the first three shades and the last. This formula looks like a definite pass for these 52 year old desert lips.
I’ve never felt like, “Whoa, my lips are in bad shape” until I tried some of these recently. Sometimes the first shade I apply of a formula will look wonky, so I usually do a test application, remove, and then I start the real swatching, just in case.
Sorry Not Sorry’s description sounds quite unappealing. However I really think shades like When In Doubt and Sorry Not Sorry really suit you
Thanks, Jessica!
These are really bad coming from a brand that can do really good lip products.
I do like the colour of The New Black and of Troublemaker, but I don’t like them enough to buy either of them, I have dupes for Troublemaker, and I’d rather get a dupe for The New Black, I’ll just have to check the dupelist.
This site is so good, as you have such good features, Christine. Thank you again for the best makeup site I know!
I am so disappointed in this range 🙁
Thank you, Helene! 🙂
Troublemaker is my favorite of the bunch, but I think I’d like Sangria better, because it’s glossier. Not a big matte lipstick fan.
Definitely skip these then! 😀
Im so glad I waited for your review before get these. I wanted so bad ‘When In Doubt’ and ‘Sorry Not Sorry’. But seeing the photos I can see these are not for me. Colors are not what I expected and the formula is a big down. I was expecting these were the creamiest matte lipsticks 😉 Thanks for th review as always Christine!
No problem, Liz! xo
I had some hope for this..you defintely need a lip liner to make these decent to wear. I almost gagged with how bad they settle into your lip lines.
I can’t get over how short-wearing these are on top of how unflattering they can look on :/
