Tarte Surfer Girl Drench Lip Splash Lipstick
Tarte Surfer Girl Drench Lip Splash Lipstick ($22.00 for 0.085 oz.) is a bright, medium magenta with cool, blue undertones and a satin finish. It had good color payoff with a creamy, glide-on consistency that didn’t drag and applied evenly. This particular shade seemed to emphasize lip lines slightly, while the color itself started to gather in lip lines after three hours of wear–it lasted for closer to six hours and left behind a stain. It actually was a shade that seemed to wear better if blotted down initially, as it reduced some of the thickness and slip but didn’t impact the intensity of the shade. It was neither drying nor hydrating on me. MAC Invite Intrigue (LE, $19.00) is darker (95% similar). Bite Beauty #007 (LE, $36.00) is darker, more muted, glossier (95% similar). Tarte Top Down Drench Lip Splash Lipstick ($22.00 for 0.085 oz.) is a medium-dark, rosy coral with warm undertones and a satin sheen. It had rich color coverage with a smooth, velvety texture that applied without dragging and yielded even pigment. It wore well without color settling into lip lines. This shade lasted for five hours on me and was very lightly hydrating. Charlotte Tilbury Gracefully Pink (was Amazing Grace) (P, $37.00) is darker, more muted (90% similar). Charlotte Tilbury Miranda May (P, $37.00) is darker, cooler (90% similar). Charlotte Tilbury Too Bad I'm Bad (P, $34.00) is more muted, warmer (90% similar). Tarte Wet Suit Drench Lip Splash Lipstick ($22.00 for 0.085 oz.) is a deep berry with cool undertones and a satin sheen. This was one of the worst in the range, as it had semi-opaque coverage and an uneven, gritty-looking appearance–it was like the lipstick balled up on itself (but it didn’t feel grainy). It pulled into lip lines from the beginning of application, and it worsened while worn. The color lasted for five and a half hours and feathered on me. It was neither hydrating nor moisturizing. Tarte Yachting (P, $21.00) is lighter, glossier (90% similar). Urban Decay Marfa (LE, $18.00) is cooler (90% similar). Make Up For Ever C506 (DC, $22.00) is glossier (90% similar). FORMULA OVERVIEW | Tarte Drench Lip Splash Lipstick ($22.00 for 0.085 oz.) is supposed to have “full coverage” with a “matte” finish and still manage to hydrate the lips while being “long-wearing.” The range is very pigmented with a more semi-matte to satin finish than truly matte. The wear varied from four to six hours, but the more velvety, silicone-like consistency made it so some shades settled into lip lines, though the more forgiving texture makes it easier to smooth the color back in place during wear. The formula is comfortable to wear overall with a faint mint scent but no taste. If you twist-up the entire lipstick from the tube, it appears rather stubby, but it is actually still 0.085 oz. by weight–the average lipstick is between 0.10 oz. and 0.12 oz. with the occasional lipstick as large as 0.15 oz. (Tarte’s regular lipstick contains $17.00/0.10 oz., and their twist-up LipSurgence range is $24.00/0.10 oz.). Worth noting, the tube itself felt thin and less sturdy than most lipstick tubes I’ve come across.

I just order Top Down yesrtday to get some other samples from Sephora…. I’m soo glad it has a good formula as well.
Actually NARS Kelly Audacious Lipstick has been on my wish list for awhile so I’m glad I waited. 😉
I look forward to hearing your thoughts on it! 🙂
This formula looks very intensely pigmented. These shades are not for me though. I may pick up a tube for interest and wear when I’m looking for that locked in longevity. I noticed the highlighter on your full face photos straight away. Looks lovely
They are pretty pigmented! They remind me of MAC’s new matte formula but less heavy, little creamier.
Love, Love Surfer Girl and Wet suit! What fun shades! These look great on you Christine!
Thank you, Nicole!
Top Down looks great on you! As for Wet Suit….as usual, the purples are the trouble-makers. It looks kind of scary, seeping into lip lines, and that gritty look makes me think of blood clots, ugh 🙁
Wet Suit wasn’t a total surprise, but it’s interesting to me that a lot of brands will give those shades more slip than other shades!
I ordered skinny dip and was disappointed with how little product there was for the price. I know it has 0.085 but still feel like they could have had more product for $22. I agree with you on the packaging it felt thin and cheap which was also surprising for tarte. This lipstick line kinda let me down after seeing how much awesome stuff Tarte was coming out with.
Bummer to hear you were disappointed, Lauren! It is less than standard for sure, though I think visually it appears smaller than it otherwise is (it’s not that much less compared to average).
I don’t think these are going to be my shades — Surfer Girl is a bit light for me, Top Down a bit too orange, and the unfortunate performance of Wet Suit would rule it out even if it wasn’t a bit dark for me. Maybe one of the other shades in the range will work for me.
These were some of the bolder ones!
Top Down!
🙂
That’s a shame about Wet Suit, because the color itself is nice.
I agree!
Top Down is such a great color and it looks great on you, Christine! I think I might go with one of the dupes though – Nars Kelly is more money, but it is also more product and sounds like better packaging as well.
NARS Kelly would certainly be a good alternative!
Love Top Down and Wet Suit. Sounds a good formula tho shame that the amount and packaging is not as good as it could be.
The size of these seems to be the sticking point for a lot of people!
Surfer Girl and Top Down are both quite pretty for spring/summer or just for throwing on a bright, happy color, it seems! I really like them both, but already have too many dupes for Top Down.
However, Wet Suit is such a disappointment for me here, because I actually liked what I *thought* was micro-glitter, but in reality is just the lipstick balling up on itself! At least there’s still Glastonbury or MAC Instigator, so I’ll live after all….?
LOL! Ah, if only it was glitter instead!
Passsss I have dupes for all three and I’m bummed they’re not an amazing formula or value. Christine do your pictures show them twisted up all the way??
No, they’re not twisted-up all the way – there’s maybe 2/3 of a centimeter left.
Surfer Girl and Top Down are really pretty. Too bad about Wet Suit…those dark purples will get us every time.
So hard to get the darker shades right!
My Bite Black Truffle arrived today. OMG, now that’s a dark purple done RIGHT! I’m in love with it.
All beautiful colors, I wish Wet Suit was better.
Me too 🙁
Love the wet suit colour and it reminds me of Divine Wine by Maybelline. It looks really gorgeous on you Christine.
Thank you, Genevieve!
Ahhh so in love with Top Down. Want want want.
That’s a fun one!
I’m in love with the packaging but so many of the reviews I read on Sephora said the packaging was cheap and the product amount was tiny. What do you think Christine?
It’s 0.085 oz. – the average lipstick is 0.10 oz. It’s smaller but it’s not tiny, based on weight. Visually, it looks stubby, but as far as weight is concerned, it’s not like, half less, or anything like that.
