Tarte Deluxe Amazonian Butter Lipstick Set
Tarte Holiday 2015 Deluxe Amazonian Butter Lipstick Set ($21.00 for 0.14 oz.) is a travel-sized set of four of the brand’s Amazonian Butter Lipsticks, which are okay if you like a more balm-like, semi-sheer, lightly shiny formula, but not so much if you were banking on Tarte delivering on their promise of “hydrating creamy, full-coverage.” I reviewed the formula here when it first launched, and they’re very lightly hydrating with short wear time; unfortunately, these were consistent with that prior experience. They have a lightweight, balm-like consistency that goes on without tugging but wear away with two hours (except one shade, Sangria, lasted closer to three hours) and aren’t nearly as hydrating as they claim. They are mint-scented and packaged in cardboard tubes (same as the full-sized versions). If you’re unfamiliar with minis, they tend to be quite narrow, but I didn’t have any issues with the bullets breaking. The formula has a stronger mint scent and a very light mint taste (at times). A full-sized Amazonian Butter Lipstick retails for $17.00 and contains 0.10 oz. (or $170.00/oz.), so this set contains $23.80 worth of lipstick (I’m not sure how they got to a $32 value, which is what is listed on Sephora).
Punch is described as a “mauve pink.” It’s a subdued, medium pink with soft, warm undertones and a creamy, lightly shiny finish. It had semi-sheer to semi-opaque color payoff that applied without dragging and deposited color evenly. The color lasted for two and a half hours, and it was slightly hydrating. Revlon Pink Truffle (DC, $7.49) is darker, warmer (90% similar). Dior Diorkiss (578) (P, $35.00) is more muted, less pigmented, cooler (90% similar). Bellini is described as a “golden pink.” It’s a light, pinky-peach with gold shimmer. It had sheer color payoff that lightened my natural lip color while adding light shine and noticeable shimmer. It was gone within two hours of wear, and it was neither hydrating nor drying. Surratt Beauty Jolie Laide (P, $36.00) is lighter, less pigmented (90% similar). Chanel Secret (85) (LE, $37.00) is less shimmery (90% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Julianne (LE, $36.00) is more shimmery, darker (90% similar). Mimosa is described as a “peachy nude.” It’s a soft, peachy-brown with warm undertones and a natural sheen. It had semi-sheer to semi-opaque color coverage that went on fairly evenly, though it had a bit more slip and could look streaky if you pressed your lips together. This shade wore for two hours on me and was lightly moisturizing. MAC Touche (LE, $20.00) is darker (95% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Carriacou (LE, $55.00) is cooler (90% similar). Estee Lauder Crystal Baby (P, $32.00) is cooler (95% similar). MAC Soft Talkin' (LE, $20.00) is darker, glossier (90% similar). MAC Shy Girl (P, $19.00) is brighter (90% similar). NARS Belle de Jour (P, $26.00) is less shimmery, lighter, warmer (85% similar). MAC Pure Vanity (LE, $19.00) is lighter (85% similar). Marc Jacobs Beauty Dizzy Spell (104) (DC, $30.00) is lighter (85% similar). Chanel Conquise (144) (P, $45.00) is darker, more pigmented (80% similar). Sangria is described as a “berry red.” It’s a muted, medium-dark berry with warm undertones and a soft shine. It had semi-opaque color payoff that applied evenly and had a comfortable feel to it. The color wore well for three hours and was lightly hydrating. Estee Lauder Inspiring (P, $30.00) is lighter (90% similar). Chanel Ce Soir (DC, $34.00) is lighter, warmer (90% similar). I wish Bellini performed better. I love the not over the top shimmer
Same 🙁
I was thinking of buying this but the value is pretty poor for a holiday set. Plus I have to be so careful with mini lipsticks because they always break on me.
The value is lower than I expected 🙁
Uh-uh, not going to bother with this set. They look just like tinted lip balm, seriously, with the one exception of Sangria looking almost like lipstick. But to look like balm and yet, not being moisturizing stumps me, though!
They really are a lot like a balm, and I don’t know why they advertise as full coverage, lol!
I’m not a fan of lipsticks that are too sheer, but Bellini looks like a nice topper.
It could be!
These are right up my alley. I love sheer lipsticks!
Yayyy!
They look lovely on you, I really like the colours. They’re very natural and really enhance the make up you’re wearing. It’s a shame they don’t last very long but I like them enough to want to buy them if they are released over here in the UK!
Thank you, Claire!
I almost want to try this set, as these colors seem everyday wearable, and I always prefer lighter textures and sheer coverage, as it seems so much more natural than those creamy pigmented lipsticks that market seems to be overstocked with.
You may like this set then!
The lipsticks are so-so but your eye make-up is simply amazing! The colors, blending and shape are flawless. 🙂
Thank you, Anny!
Pretty but not worth it. A pass for me.
Bellini is pretty. I like to check out the unavailable holiday sets, at least they can’t dig deep holes in my wallet. 🙂
Love the eye makeup!
The only one I really like is Sangria. Everyone always says the wear time is awful with Tarte lipsticks, so I’ve never tried them. I stick with the Lipsurgence chubbies instead.
The only colour I really like is the Sangria. But I think there are better alternatives around. I must say your eye look is just stunning Christine – really gorgeous. Those colours suit you so well.
This mini set seems nice, but not impressive. Bellini looks very pretty with the subtle shimmer though.
Love ’em all, except for Punch! I’m a huge fan of lipstick formulas like this.
