Tarte Beach Bum Drench Lip Splash Lipstick

Tarte Beach Bum Drench Lip Splash Lipstick ($22.00 for 0.085 oz.) is a muted, medium-dark rosy brown with soft, warm undertones and a satin finish. It had nearly opaque color coverage with a smooth, velvety consistency that glided on and sat well on the lips. There was enough slip in this that it didn’t last particularly long–four and a half hours–but was comfortable to wear and didn’t dry my lips out. Colour Pop Mosh Pit (LE, $6.00) is darker (90% similar). Hourglass I'm Addicted (P, $34.00) is lighter, warmer (95% similar). Bite Beauty Verbena (P, $26.00) is lighter, brighter (90% similar). Tarte Cabana Boy Drench Lip Splash Lipstick ($22.00 for 0.085 oz.) is a muted, medium rose pink with neutral-to-cool undertones and a satin finish. It had good pigmentation with a smooth, velvety feel that applied easily and didn’t drag/tug on the lips. It had a slightly thicker texture, and I noticed issues with the color getting into lip lines after three hours of wear, while it lasted for about four and a half hours all told. On me, it was neither drying nor hydrating. MAC Mmmmmm (LE, $19.50) is darker (95% similar). Smashbox Audition (P, $21.00) is lighter (90% similar). Bite Beauty Sake (P, $26.00) is lighter, warmer (95% similar). Marc Jacobs Beauty Slowburn (246) (P, $30.00) is lighter, warmer (90% similar). Tarte Bonfire Drench Lip Splash Lipstick ($22.00 for 0.085 oz.) is a deep, muted purple-plum with subtle, cool undertones and a satin sheen. It had semi-opaque color payoff, but the natural lip color definitely comes through with this shade. The consistency was more emollient with less density compared to other shades. I had some issues with the color pulling into lip lines over time, though no feathering, while the color lasted for four and a half hours with a light stain. It was slightly hydrating overall. Dior Candy Cane (322) (LE, $38.00) is lighter (90% similar). Pat McGrath Exxotica (LE, $38.00) is glossier (90% similar). MAC Instigator (P, $19.50) is darker, brighter (90% similar). FORMULA OVERVIEW | Tarte Drench Lip Splash Lipstick ($22.00 for 0.085 oz.) is supposed to have “full coverage” with a “matte” finish and still manage to hydrate the lips while being “long-wearing.” The range is very pigmented with a more semi-matte to satin finish than truly matte. The wear varied from four to six hours, but the more velvety, silicone-like consistency made it so some shades settled into lip lines, though the more forgiving texture makes it easier to smooth the color back in place during wear. The formula is comfortable to wear overall with a faint mint scent but no taste. If you twist-up the entire lipstick from the tube, it appears rather stubby, but it is actually still 0.085 oz. by weight–the average lipstick is between 0.10 oz. and 0.12 oz. with the occasional lipstick as large as 0.15 oz. (Tarte’s regular lipstick contains $17.00/0.10 oz., and their twist-up LipSurgence range is $24.00/0.10 oz.). Worth noting, the tube itself felt thin and less sturdy than most lipstick tubes I’ve come across.

These are nice, but BITE Amuse Bouche has very similar colors, and much better formula and value ( $ 26 for .15 oz for BITE vs. $22 for .085 oz for Tarte)

I was able to snatch a Tarte Rainforest of the Sea 500 point perk from Sephora, which included this lipstick in Beach Bum. The colour is so beautiful and my first impression was quite good (although I didn’t wear it for long). I looked it up on Sephora’s site and people were complaining about the small quantity of product compared to other full-size lipsticks. I don’t know if I’ll end up purchasing it, but I am definitely still obsessed with the colour.

It’s less than the average lipstick, but it’s not as stingy as it looks. It does look stumpy, though, when you twist up the tube – but by weight, they’re 0.085 oz. vs. 0.10 oz. (average lipstick, e.g. MAC).

No problem 🙂 The other thing worth considering is whether you’ll finish a lipstick or not – if you normally do, then maybe size is more important, but if you’ve yet to make it halfway through a lipstick, perhaps lower price tag (say this vs. $35 lipstick) is still better!

I have a sample of Beach Bum — it’s way too warm/brown for me. I like Cababna Boy, but have NARS Anna. I like shades like Bonfire, but they’re a bit dark for me; I think if I was going to get one, I’d go for NARS Train Bleu — I know I like their velvet matte lip pencils, and it’s cooler-toned.

Beach Bum? Was one of the execs showing their backside off along the promenade? 😀 By the way, I do love Bonfire Drench, such a gorgeous colour but alas I think I’m too pale to carry it off.

Ohhhhh Cabana Boy…! I think it’s the loveliest lip color with the eye look you have for these reviews, that soft cool tone complements the warm copper and champagne beautifully. You came up with such a gorgeous look, I want to recreate it entirely!

But I’m so glad that CP’s Dopey is such a close match to it (and with a better rating!), since I prefer liquid formulas. Funny that seeing a different product from a different brand is the thing that made me decide I want it!

Love Beach Bum! That shade looks perfect as a nice everyday type of lipstick to throw on with just a bronzy cheek, bb or cc cream, some mascara and a little smudgey liner!
What a shame that Bonfire wasn’t more like that in coverage! Perhaps with a lip liner?
