Sydney Grace Mountain Trail Eyeshadow Bundle Review & Swatches
Mountain Trail
Sydney Grace Mountain Trail 9-Pan Bundle ($33.00 for 0.54 oz.) is a new, permanent bundle that features a mix of gold, olive, and green shades across matte and shimmer finishes. All nine shades were easy to work with, had semi-opaque or better pigmentation, and blended out without difficulty. Trailhead was a bit dustier (but blended out well) and less pigmented, but it built up well, so I imagine that in practice, that’s not a bad thing given it’s one of the darker shades in the set. To Earth had a little too much slip, so it didn’t go on quite as evenly as most shades in the range have for me. Shades like Be the Sunshine, Light My World, and Escape applied and “melted” onto my lid giving a very smooth, high-shine finish that didn’t look heavy or emphasize my lid texture/lines.

Dirt Road
Dirt Road is a darker, peachy yellow with warm undertones and a matte finish. The eyeshadow had excellent color payoff in one pass, which adhered well to bare skin and blended out without difficulty. The consistency was soft without being powdery, so it didn’t sheer out too readily and didn’t have fallout. It stayed on well for eight hours on me before I noticed any fading.

Formula Overview

The matte eyeshadows tend to be pigmented (typically semi-opaque or opaque, often buildable if they aren't opaque) with a soft, more velvety texture that has slight slip but isn't so thick that it gets difficult to use, applies unevenly, or has a lot of fallout. I've found that most of the matte eyeshadows apply and blend out without much effort but a few may take a bit more effort to diffuse along the edges. The matte formula tends to wear between eight and eight and a half hours on me.

Back Woods
Back Woods is a muted mustard yellow with warm undertones and a matte finish. It had opaque pigmentation in a single layer with a soft, smooth texture that wasn’t too powdery nor too firmly pressed in the pan. The eyeshadow applied well to bare skin and blended out with ease. This shade lasted nicely for eight hours on me before fading slightly.

Trailhead
Trailhead is a muted, medium-dark green with subtle, cool undertones and a semi-matte finish. It had barely-there shimmer that helped it to blend, but the eyeshadow looked matte in practice to my eye. The texture was soft, slightly thinner and a touch drier compared to most of the brand’s mattes, but it applied evenly, blended out well, and built up from semi-opaque coverage to full coverage with a second layer. It stayed on well for eight hours on me before there was noticeable fading.

Be the Sunshine
Be the Sunshine is a medium-dark, dirty gold with warm, yellow undertones and a sparkling, metallic finish. The pigmentation was opaque in a single layer, while the texture was soft, slightly more loosely pressed, with a creaminess to it that helped the product adhere evenly and “melt” onto my skin. It lasted well for eight hours on me before creasing faintly.

Formula Overview

The shimmer eyeshadows are more consistent in pigmentation with the majority of shades having opaque color coverage. The more metallic/sparkly the shade is, the creamier and more emollient the eyeshadow felt in the pan, which often yielded really smooth application and good adherence to the lid, though a few worked better with a fingertip or a dampened brush for true-to-pan color or to get a truer finish/sheen.
Most shades, however, worked well with brushes, and I didn't have trouble applying or blending out most of the shimmer shades. The more satin to pearl like finishes tend to feel a little thinner but blend out well. These shades wore between eight and nine hours on me with some of the more foiled-like shades creasing noticeably at the end (and the less foiled-like ones fading).

Light My World is a rich, deeper gold with strong,w arm undertones and a sparkling, metallic finish. The color payoff was opaque and adhered well to bare skin with a smooth, even application, though there was a smidgen of fallout. The texture was smooth to the touch, creamier and denser but not too thick or heavy on my lid. It wore well for eight and a half hours on me before it faded a bit.

Escape is a light-medium green with slightly cooler, almost teal undertones and warmer, gold-green shimmer that gave it a metallic finish. It was richly pigmented with a smooth, lightly creamy texture that was denser but not too firmly pressed in the pan that it became difficult to pick up with a brush. The eyeshadow stayed on nicely for eight hours on me before I noticed signs of wear.

Escape
PiPPermanent in Palette. $6.25.
Rustic
Rustic is a muted, olive brown with subtle, warm undertones and faint, green micro-shimmer strewn throughout. It had more of a satin to satin-matte finish, as it appeared to have a subtle sheen when applied and blended out, but it wasn’t quite enough that I’d call it a true satin. The texture was soft, a little dusty in the pan, but it was blendable and easy to work with. The pigmentation was opaque and lasted well for eight hours on me before fading noticeably.

PiPPermanent in Palette. $6.25.
To Earth
To Earth is a blackened, forest green with neutral-to-cool undertones and a pearly sheen. The pigmentation was opaque in one pass, which applied fairly evenly to bare skin. The texture had moderate slip to it, which I felt made it apply better with fingertips for more even application, though it could be applied and blended out to an even finish with a brush, it just took a little more effort (but wasn’t difficult by any stretch). It wore nicely for eight hours on me before creasing very faintly.

I’m not one for green shadows, but trailhead would definitely work. I originally wanted this palette, but need to be practical. I doubt I would wear to many of these shades..
I feel like I’m being bombarded by temptation today.
Well, it IS permanent, and at $33, it’s not exactly bank-breaking if you ended up waiting. Maybe more if you have $50 worth of Sydney Grace you were already intending to buy, then it’s just a freebie.
But if it’s just one shade that you think would really work, I’d skip!
I picked this up today. I’m disappointed that a lot of the stuff I wanted during the sale sold out before today (Autumn’s Reign palette mainly), since this was the day I was planning to shop, but I still got several new things and some great deals. I picked up two mystery bags, the fall bundle, one cream shadow that happened to be in stock, and this bundle. I’m probably finished unless they last surprise day totally blows me away. ?
Actually disenheartened that I have at least one dupe for every one of these shades. Even SG dupes. I so wanted this bundle. Really ought not, despite wishing all these lived together. Many stash dupes are singles, living in Adept palettes, and that’s what I use the Ofra easel palette for, gathering a selection of singles. Bummed beyond words; cancel that cart. ? $ saved. ?
Thank you for another timely review, Christine! I definitely don’t *need* this, but I find SG bundles / palettes inspire me in a way that few other brands do. I love how the slightly-peachy Dirt Road pairs with the greens.
Glad I could get it up in time!
Thank you for getting this up so quickly, Christine! You’re the best! And I adore your eye look.
I put in an order with SG today, so I could get this. I put the order through after seeing this. I’m surprised how few of these colors I have dupes for. Plus, some will dupe some other, more expensive shades I have on my wishlist. I think with this bundle added to some other shadows/palettes I’ve acquired this year, I should have a really solid collection of olives and complimentary greens/golds. I was seriously lacking that shade range, because for too many years I believed the “rule” to never match your eye color.
I find that “rule” so ridiculous! I have green eyes and I LOVE how olive greens and olive golds look on me. And especially for those of us with really fair skin, contrasting our eye color with a purple or pink can be really tricky because it so easily goes into a bruisy/infected look if you choose colors poorly.
AJ, you’re right, it’s totally ridiculous! That was such an ingrained, hard-and-fast no-no during the time I was growing up. Even though I ignored every other makeup and color rule, I just couldn’t shake that one. Like colors competing with your eyes? It made sense. I don’t think that got kicked out till the 90s. I didn’t try olives and greens till about 5 or 6 years ago, and I’m still kicking myself! I have to be careful not to put big patches of matte, bright emerald greens on my lids (shimmers in this color are fine for some reason), but that’s the only shade, finish, and placement of any green that I haven’t loved with my eye color.
My eyes are reddish brown and amber around the pupil, light blue/blue-gray/yellow in the outer iris, and then I have a dark gray ring around my iris. If you’re not really close to my face, they look olive green.
I’m seriously digging this bundle! It’s stunning. However, I did just recently purchase Coloured Raine Safari Raine, also have Huda Emerald and ABH Subculture, so I’m guessing that I’m set? Or at least I hope so!
I do wish that To Earth, Back Woods and Rustic were available as singles…
They probably will be, eventually. It’s killing me not to get this. Muted, primarily green, what’s not to adore?
I’m so excited about this bundle! I do have dupes for some of the shades, but a lot of them are only 85% dupes, and some of them are one green shade in a big palette.
I was just showing this review to my partner to tell them what I got yesterday, and they loved your eye look, Christine! It’s such a beautiful blend of greens.
Thank you, AJ! 🙂
