Rare Beauty Fearless & Thrilling Lip Souffles Reviews & Swatches
Fearless
Rare Beauty Fearless Lip Souffle Matte Cream Lipstick ($20.00 for 0.13 oz.) is a soft, medium-dark pink with warmer undertones and a satin finish. It appeared darker, almost browner, when initially swatched but had a faster set/dry down compared to other shades in the range, so it ended up appearing lighter and warmer applied to my lips in a smooth, even layer (I triple-checked the color!).
It had opaque color payoff in a single layer, which applied evenly and smoothly across my lips without emphasizing lip texture. The texture felt very lightweight, more velvety but spreadable, and it was easy to work with. The formula doesn’t have a full dry-down but does get less emollient and more velvety (but not tacky or heavy) after a minute or so of wear. Then whatever sheen remains wears down naturally over the next hour or so to a more flat, matte finish. This shade stayed on nicely for five hours and felt neither drying nor hydrating to me.

Formula Overview
$20.00/0.13 oz. - $153.85 Per Ounce
The formula is supposed to be an "air-whipped lip cream" with "rich, melted-in color" paired with "nourishing hydration." It's a liquid lipstick with a more velvety consistency and satin to matte finish--some shades seemed to turn matte very quickly while others were a bit denser and creamier.
It has a lot of silicones in it, which gives it slip and glide but not in the typical way a liquid lipstick might feel; it has a lighter-weight feel and a slight powderiness to it. If you're familiar with silicone-based primers, it has a similar glide to it. The fomrula felt "air-whipped" as it was lighter-weight, mousse-like, and had softer edges as it was applied with most shades.
Most of the shades were opaque in a single layer, and I did not have any issues with the applicator over-applying product. It seemed like it was enough product for full coverage, but if one wanted more of a blotted, diffused matte look (which is often how this type of mousse-like formula is used for), it felt very doable without having to wipe off product.
The majority of the shades applied evenly, didn't crack or emphasize my lip lines, and lasted anywhere from four to eight hours (some left a stain). They were more neither hydrating nor drying to me over time. They had a faint, beachy floral scent but didn't seem to have a taste as the lip balm formula did.

Thrilling
Rare Beauty Thrilling Lip Souffle Matte Cream Lipstick ($20.00 for 0.13 oz.) is a deep, chocolate brown with moderate, warm undertones and a satin finish. The consistency was lightweight, fluid, and more velvety–airy, lightly whipped and spreadable without being overly emollient.
It had nearly opaque pigmentation that applied well in a single layer with an even layer of product that was easy to work with as the formula wasn’t prone to emphasizing lip texture or settling noticeably into my lip lines. It had a light sheen that remained present for an hour or so of wear before it wore down to a more soft matte finish It lasted well for six hours and felt neither drying nor hydrating over time.

Promising start! I may go for one or two of these over the Mac Powder Kiss shades.
I’m not interested in either of these colors personally, but I am glad to see the formula performing so well as this was the product I was most interested from this launch and I’m generally a fan of lipstick formulas that are advertised as a soft/blurred/velvet matte or souffle formula. Hopefully the colors I do prefer perform similarly.
Neither shade is appealing to me but I do think my daughter would love Thrilling so it is a possibility. I watched Taylor’s last Foundation Friday video where she reviewed the foundation from Rare Beauty. She wasn’t a fan but it did intrigue me. It goes to show that I have been disconnected lately because I had no idea Selena Gomez was releasing a cosmetic range. Sounds like the foundation and concealer are very inclusive as each has forty some shades. Since these reviewed well I will likely pick up the one for my daughter. I wonder if anyone else has tried the foundation and has any thoughts about it. I am sort of looking for a new foundation. I don’t know why because I have several that I really like but I do like trying new foundations.
A lot of people seem to like the foundation! I think it may be slightly better/easier to work with on less dry skin types.
I have Courage and love it!! Need more colors… so glad you’re reviewing rare beauty! As a mental health professional, I’m excited that they’re donating to mental health… ?
I agree with you, Sandy! Mental health remains to have a certain stigma. I appreciate that Selena has openly discussed her mental health journey, and to incorporate it as part of her beauty line is something new and special. Hopefully, we, as a society, will continue to grow and embrace what was before so taboo 🙌. Anyway, I am a fan of Rare Beauty products and just picked up these eye palettes for the holidays.
Love Fearless for a nice, basic MLBB type shade that seems to set down just enough to wear when I have to pull on my mask going into a store/other public building, or getting onto the bus or cab.
I love the shade Thrilling – a perfect autumn shade.
I can’t wait to see the review for Brave! It’s in my cart since I saw it but I’m waiting for my 15% at Sephora to hit in a week 🙂 The formula does look promising!
Christine, how does the formula of these compare directly against the new Powderkiss liquids? I’ve read your reviews/comments on formula for both but am having a hard time conceptualizing the differences. I currently have 1 Powderkiss Liquid lippie (Over the Taupe) and enjoy it. It sounds like I would like these from Rare Beauty, too, but all non-essential shops are closed on Oahu so I can’t go to Sephora to ask staff to swatch one for me just for texture. Thanks!
These are thinner, lighter-weight, less dense, more matte.
Thanks! That’s very helpful!
