Hot Cakes is a vivid, medium-dark red with strong, cool undertones and a flat, matte finish. It had nearly opaque pigmentation in a single layer, which applied smoothly and precisely along the edge of my lips. For all-over application, it went on fairly evenly and didn't tug much, but I'd recommend applying to the lower lip, gently pressing lips together (as this helps distribute the color more comfortably), and then continuing to fill in where necessary. The pencil had a waxy feel, which gave it glide without feeling emollient. It wore well for over six hours on its own, left a stain behind, and was non-drying.
