Celestial Odyssey

Pat McGrath Celestial Odyssey Mega MTHRSHP Eyeshadow Palette ($78.00 for 0.684 oz.) is a new, limited edition eyeshadow palette for the holiday season. There are 18 shades–four matte eyeshadows and 14 shimmer eyeshadows–that include a few previously-released shades but the majority are new shades. The eyeshadows were pigmented, blendable, and easy to work with and had minimal fallout with nine to 10-hour wear. It felt like the quality I’d expect from the brand with very little to complain about.

If the color story is up your alley, it’s a fantastic deal for Pat McGrath’s eyeshadow formula!

Saturn Sunset

Saturn Sunset is a medium, reddish-plum with a matte finish. It had opaque pigmentation with a soft, somewhat powdery texture, though it was blendable and easier to work. I’d recommend using a lighter-hand and building up to avoid light fallout otherwise. This shade lasted well for nine hours before fading visibly.

Formula Overview

$25.00/0.04 oz. - $625.00 Per Ounce

Pat McGrath's eyeshadows are, generally, supposed to be "super-saturated" with "creamy, soft textures" and "extreme blendability and adherence without creasing." A lot of how well they perform (and to some degree, how they are supposed to be applied and marketed) depends on the type of shades, but by and large, the eyeshadows perform very much as they are described.

The brand released single eyeshadows in March 2019, and the shades have been consistent in quality, look, and feel. They are not removable, unfortunately, so one would have to depot like any other single eyeshadow--I tried using tweezers and lifting on several shades to no avail. The lids are held closed by a weak magnet, so I'm not sure they're as secure as most single eyeshadow compacts in my stash--I wish it really locked in, but there's definitely a magnet that pulls the lid down if it's within 2mm of the base.

The mattes are velvety, blendable, and dense without being thick or too heavy, and they have semi-opaque to opaque pigmentation where a little can go a long way with some of the deeper and richer hues. The satin and pearl finishes are smooth, lightly creamy, and firmer but not dense or thick with good pigmentation, blendability, and easy application. The more metallic finishes tend to be softer, creamy, and smooth with a bit more denseness and no powderiness. The sparkly/glittery shades are often designed to be applied wet for richer coverage or intensity, which has largely been my experience. Most of the shades last between eight and nine hours.

Rose Venus

Rose Venus is a medium copper with warm, more orange undertones and a metallic finish. The consistency was incredibly smooth, almost cream-like as it was finely-milled, not at all powdery but still readily picked up with a dry brush. It was richly pigmented and stayed on well for nine and a half hours before fading a bit.

This shade was previously released as an eyeshadow single.

Gold Galaxy

Gold Galaxy is a deeper, yellowy gold with subtle, warm undertones and a bright, metallic finish. It had opaque color coverage in a single layer, which adhered evenly to bare skin without fallout. The texture was moderately dense, more loosely-pressed compared to most of the brand’s metallics but not messy to use. It stayed on well for nine hours before fading slightly.

Noir Moon

Noir Moon is a rich, inky black base with multi-colored pearl throughout–predominantly teal, emerald green, and violet. The consistency was incredibly smooth and almost cream-like, which helped the eyeshadow adhere well to bare skin and retain all that pretty shimmer and not just dissipate when blended. It had opaque color payoff that lasted well for nine hours before showing signs of fading.

Bronze Nova

Bronze Nova is a light, golden bronze with strong, warm undertones and fine flecks of pink and gold micro-sparkle over a metallic finish. It had opaque pigmentation paired with a cream-like texture that looked chunkier in the pan than it turned out to be in practice, as it really smoothed out when applied to bare skin. It wore nicely for nine hours before fading noticeably.

Nocturne is a darker brown with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. It had nearly opaque color payoff that was easily built up to full coverage. Galactic Glow is a light, golden beige with strong, warm undertones and a bright, metallic finish. The eyeshadow was intensely pigmented where a little went a long way. The texture was smooth to the touch, dense but not too thick or too firmly-pressed into the pan, which made it easy to pick up with an assortment of brushes. It stayed on well for nine hours before showing signs of fading.

The eyeshadow had a more loosely-pressed feel, but it was still moderately emollient with a good amount of binder and some thickness, which helped this sparkly shade apply well to bare skin and retain its coverage without having much fallout. It wore well for nine hours with very little fallouts over time.

Bronze Eclipse

Bronze Eclipse is a rich bronze with moderate, warm undertones and a smooth, metallic sheen. It was intensely pigmented where a little went a long way, while the texture was smooth, dense without being too thick, and blendable. It stayed on well for nine and a half hours before fading visibly on me.

This shade was previously released in a palette.

Solar Flare

Solar Flare is a very light orange with moderate, warm undertones and lighter, peachy-gold shimmer that gave it a pearly finish. It had a smooth, lightly emollient consistency that was thinner than most of the brand’s shimmers, but it still had opaque pigmentation that adhered well to bare skin. This shade lasted well for eight and a half hours before fading slightly.

Nirvana

Nirvana is a deep blue-teal with cool undertones and a smooth, metallic sheen. The eyeshadow had rich pigmentation where a little went a long way. The consistency was moderately dense, creamy, and smooth to the touch without being too firmly-pressed into the pan. It showed signs of fading after nine hours of wear.

Corrupt Copper

Corrupt Copper is a rich, molten copper with strong, warm orange undertones and a pearl-like sheen. It had opaque color payoff paired with a smooth, moderately dense consistency that was slightly firm but not difficult to pick up–just needed a firmer hand than some other shades, relatively. It lasted nicely for nine and a half hours before fading a bit.

This shade was previously released as an eyeshadow single.

Palladium

Palladium is a darker, pewter gold with strong, warm undertones and a metallic sheen. It’s a dirtier gold, which is less “gold” traditionally because it lacks that really yellow/orange warmth of most golds. The texture was moderately dense, smooth, and blendable without being overly thick. It had opaque color coverage that applied evenly and stayed on well for nine hours before fading visibly.

Citrine Envy

Citrine Envy is a bright, medium grass green with lighter, warmer gold sparkle over a shiny, metallic finish. It had a chunkier consistency compared to most shades in the palette, so there was light fallout when working with it dry. It had opaque color coverage with a lightly emollient texture, which helped the product apply evenly and refrain from having additional fallout during the nine hours it wore for.

Oh me, oh my – some real beauties here (fortunately, I have dupes – multiples in some cases – for Bronze Nova, Bronze Eclipse, Palladium and even Nirvana). Even though I don’t wear shades like Citrine very often, it’s pulling on my heart-strings. What really surprises me – ME, the woman who eschews orange and red toned shadows – is how much I really like Rose Venus. Lots of shades here I don’t tend to wear but if someone gave me this palette, I’d be plenty happy.

Gina Abelkop Avatar

ok…those swatches are GORGEOUS. i wasn’t sure if i was going to get it (i already have rose venus, her teal released as a single is really similar to one of her other singles) but these are dreamy. most excited about citrine envy, heavenly body, lunar haze, and noir moon.

Kate Avatar

I do so wish that Pat would come out with something that had a larger number of cooler-toned shades. Even her more “neutral” palettes (e.g., Divine Rose 1) seem to pull very warm overall. This one is a strong maybe for me but if she released something of this quality with cooler lean, I’d be buying backups.

Valerie Avatar

I find citrine cakes up on me for some reason. I use a primer on my lids and then reinforce with Pat’s artistry wand before I use citrine so maybe it’s the primer-wand combo…

Maya Avatar

I loved my palette from last year, and definitely plan on getting this one too! I think they complement each other well without too many duplicates.

Genevieve Avatar

This is a mammoth palette, so thank you Christine for reviewing it so quickly. It is another good one from Pat, but there are lots of shades that are redundant for me. And the ones I love, I have dupes for. There are many gorgeous shades here though: Rose Venus, Bronze Nova, Nirvana and Palladium are the ones I like the best.

Latika Avatar

I purchased this pallet and I’m crazy in love with it. Every single shade is amazing!!! Perfection beautiful I’m do happy – I literally enjoy each and every color. I pretty well stick to less complicated looks – a transition shade – lid shade & under eye complimentary color and each look is perfect with so many compliments ! I will be enjoying this for a long time!!!

Helene Avatar

I was sure I didn’t need this, didn’t want it and would absolutely not even be tempted by it. Now I’m not so sure anymore. I even did a little count of what I’d use and what not, use won over the not use 13 -5 🙂
I do however have three Motherships, two MTHRSHPs and last years mega palette, and I don’t think I’ve touched any of the with exception for one of the 6 pan palettes.
I do love Noir Moon, Lunar Haze and Palladium a lot. Maybe I’ll go for this and skip the pretty orchid release from CP. Darn no – low buy, it makes life difficult sometimes though right now, after writing that, I’m so happy that is my big problem. 😉

Adrienne Avatar

I am planning on getting this palette because of the quality and I’m looking forward to using it with last year’s release. I especially love Noir Moon. I noticed that I don’t see any shifty shades/duochromes in this palette like there were in last year’s!

Z Avatar

Noir Moon looks nice, though I bet actually applied to the eye it becomes a soft black instead of that pretty rainbow effect. Nirvana is more “plain blue” than I was expecting….As for the rest of it, I don’t reach for these colors pretty much ever and even if I did they’ve been done a thousand times more at a lower price tag.

Meredith Avatar

This palette is a legit dreamboat. This year I have gone through some kind of identity crisis knowing I am growing older and a little wiser at last coming to the realization that it is much better to invest in a high quality palette with a neutral color scheme that still provides some shades when I am feeling more daring or want to bump up a look. At the beginning of my serious make up journey a couple years ago I was so foolish in my buying trends–I fell into the trap of buying colourpop palettes that caught my eye because they are affordable, cute, and the color stories are so interesting. In retrospect I could have bought one Pat palette that I knew would perform and that would challenge me to be creative while still comfortable instead of 10 colourpop palettes of dubious quality. Celestial Odyssey is one of the best make up choices I have made. I see myself using it everyday and coming up with something new all the time.

Jane Avatar

Wow, only 7 dupes! Hmmm, must wait to add the SG X Temptalia palette I’m waiting for from the US. But the more I think about it, if I only like three to four colors, even if I don’t have dupes, I don’t think it’s worth $78 for me.
