Natasha Denona Retro Glam Eyeshadow Palette Review & Swatches
Retro Glam
Natasha Denona Retro Glam 15-Pan Small Eyeshadow Palette ($69.00 for 0.67 oz.) is a new, seemingly permanent addition to the midi palette range. It takes inspiration from the larger Glam palette and the Retro mini palette that the brand has released in the past.
Individually, the quality of the eyeshadows was typically consistent with what I’d expect from Natasha Denona’s formulas, but I did not feel like the palette came together as nicely as I expected. There was more overlap between key shades and a lack of depth to ensure contrast between one shade and the next when it came to the more matte finishes.
I was personally disappointed since the color story itself was singing to my sage-green-loving heart, but I didn’t love it in practice.

Formula Overview
$29.00/0.08 oz. - $362.50 Per Ounce
The majority of the brand's eyeshadows are quite pigmented, blendable, and long-wearing. The eyeshadows have improved over time, particularly with respect to longevity (without a primer). The original formula often creased on me within seven to eight hours, whereas the more current formula wears eight to nine hours with fading (instead of full-on creasing). The more matte finishes tend to be a bit more velvety, substantial, and less dry/powdery compared to prior iterations.
The metallic finish is often the creamiest, slightly denser in feel, but has excellent pigmentation, adhesion, and blendability. The sparkling shades can have some fallout, depending on how they're applied and how sparkly they are, so they sometimes work better with fingertips or a dampened brush; they can also run sheerer compared to other finishes.
Cream-Powders are the more unique formulation and tend to have firmer, almost stiff, consistencies and more semi-opaque, watercolor-esque coverage. They are longer-wearing, but they can take a few uses to learn how to use. This formula has also improved compared to when it first debuted--it is a bit more yielding now.

I’d have to say I agree with you Christine – normally I love greens, plus some really good taupes, but somehow those sage mattes just don’t do it for me. There are many excellent shades here and the shimmers are lovely. I just feel like the palettes missing something.
I’ve noticed that almost all ND palettes are lacking in depth; they’re very midtoned heavy with more shades running dark than light.
I completely agree. Typically there are too many deep shades for me to use and not enough lighter shades, but I love her midi-palettes anyway, and mix in other brands lighter shades when necessary.
I’ve never known exactly how to put it, but you’ve done well. I’m medium yellow-neutral toned and though I like the deep colors, I feel that she’s always lacking a highlight or brow bone color for me. Also, the lighter colors in the palettes tend to go on darked on me then they swatch or appear in the palette, so I’m never quite sure of the results. And as Genevieve said, too many sage colors in this one, so I’m certain I’ll have some colors muddying up and looking the same.
Love the color story idea but between the overlap and the overall warmer lean, I’ll probably see what I have to make some inspired by looks rather than buying the palette.
Those lovely muted greens though…!!
If ONLY Evergreen had been much deeper and Jazzy were a matte, then I would have loved this very 1960’s/70’s inspired color story and welcomed it with open arms!
Instead, I went for the SG In Mel’s Memory bundle. That combined with her Tiny Marvels palette can get me feeling truly “glam” and truly “retro”.
Don’t get me wrong, I do see the inspiration behind this as I was a little kid back then, and this does make me wane nostalgic…but.
I think this is lovely. It’s going on my Christmas wish list. I don’t mind not having deeper shades, but I get where that wouldn’t work for some people.
I was on the fence about this and then I read your review of it. It does seem like it’s missing something so this is an easy pass. Thank you for reviewing this.
This is just convincing me to get the mini.
I like the idea of the color story. But in reality, with the looks I’ve seen on YouTube and IG so far, it’s definitely lacking the depth I would want for it to be a stand alone palette for me personally. And I’m not into pastel type shades. But there were enough of the other shades in here that I wanted, so I bought it on the last day of the Sephora sale.
Yeah, I just wanted more versatility out of it! With as many shades as there were, there was no need for the overlap that existed – like I am here for a sage green moment but not when all three kind of blend into each other to the point where they don’t all need to exist in the same palette!
I completely agree. Typically there are too many deep shades for me to use and not enough lighter shades, with the majority sitting in the mid-tone range, but I love her midi-palettes anyway, and mix in other brands lighter shades when necessary.
Because the Makeup by Mario palette rated so indifferently, I was thinking about maybe treating myself to this one when I can finally get out to Sephora. But, as I suspected, those milky greens and pinks (we used to call them “landlord colours” back in the 70’s!) are disappointing for me. Jazzy, Oscar, Maxi and Oz are gorgeous and “want-able” colours but I’ve got similar shadows so will try to placate myself with that.
I have this one and have been enjoying it more than I anticipated. Reasons being I love pastel and green tones. Natasha was smart by releasing this in the midi size because paying for similar green overlap shades in a large palette does not make sense. I guess that is why I feel I can get what is missing from this collection without spending over $100. Natasha is out there breaking the norm in my eyes. I wonder what is next for 2023? As long as she puts out quality items, I am here for it. And No, I don’t buy into hype!
I also wanted to point out that if anyone has any of Natasha’s other midi palettes, you can customize your own palette by popping out darker shades for more depth into retro glam. That is what is great about her palettes. If I get bored, I switch them around. The retro glam palette is the prettiest she has done and part of the reason I purchased too. I know I should know better than buying just for packaging but the shadows are great too. Natasha is brilliant. Pat needs to start offerring that interchangeable aspect on her palettes going forward.
Need
I love green eyeshadow… I will see if I can pick this up in a sale somewhere though. I think it is very reminiscent of the Anastasia Nouveau palette and I wonder if this will trickle into other brands colour palettes next year…
Had to have.
Why do you seem to have described many shades in direct contrast to the brands posted descriptions? Every single shade that they labeled as “cool” you labeled warm (a good portion) then there was one they labeled as warm and you said cool. I’m sure that gets confusing to people. Then you claim that holly and flutter are peachy pink and peach instead of pink and pink champagne like the brand.
I have the palette in my hand and it looks very cool, neutral cool and muted to me. Almost every shade has a blue-green tinge to it unlike the mini retro in which the greens are warmer, olive leaning. When describing shades, are you using the color wheel that we have commonly come to know where orange is warm and blue is cool or the opposite artists color wheel (like Mac uses for their foundations) or whatever it’s called? I’m just trying to figure out the discrepancy. Also, the Glam Palette is the same size as the Retro Glam! Both are MIDI size. This one isn’t smaller. (You describe this as a small palette and the glam as bigger).
Also, it has enough depth for me. I waste too many shadows because I only need a tiny bit of a darker shade at a time compared to the lighter and medium shades …. so if needed, I’ll just pull something from another palette. Or, I will just blend out one of the darker shimmers for depth. No biggie in this situation. I’m happy with it. It’s so beautiful. I own and have sold off too many palettes to even count and this is still very unique to my collection.
I describe them using my own words based on how I see them – I don’t copy the brand’s descriptions for describing shades. I described several of the greens as cool-toned, I believe, so I am not sure what discrepancy you mean! You might also be looking at overtone vs. undertone – undertone is most apparent once blended out, they may not appear as icy (e.g. from silvery shimmer).
My apologies for misremembering that Glam is larger – unfortunately, I am not capable of keeping as much in my memory any more given the breadth of products I reviewed, and I had just felt confident that I was correctly remembering Glam as a full-sized palette.
