Recently Deceased

Melt Cosmetics Recently Deceased Beetlejuice Pressed Pigment Palette ($48.00 for 0.479 oz.) is a new, limited edition palette featuring four matte shades and four shimmer shades. Sometimes Melt puts out really interesting color stories, but they drop the ball on the actual products… unfortunately, that was the case here. There were inconsistencies in formula within the palette, which made it harder to work with (even over an eyeshadow primer). Lost Souls was the hardest shade to use in this palette.

As many readers had pointed out after seeing promotional images, the bottom row is oddly similar. I can see the nuances when swatched, but the more matte purple shades run together in practice, and the two shimmer shades could be more differentiated by amping up the shimmer in one of them.

Per the brand, Recently Deceased, Lost Souls, Little Accident, and Bio Exorcist are Pressed Pigments and “are not approved by the FDA and Melt Cosmetics for use on the eyes.”

Betelgeuse

Betelgeuse is a bright, chartreuse green with moderate, warm undertones and a matte finish. I noticed the shade was more prone to darkening unevenly; it turned yellower and warmer around the edges and more lime green-like everywhere else, which made it harder to apply evenly and keep looking a certain way.

The texture was fairly soft, though slightly drier and moderately powdery, and blendable enough to work but had plenty of room for improvement. It wore well for eight and a half hours and left a faint, yellowish stain behind.

Paranormal

Paranormal is a deep, forest green with a blacker base and subtle, cool undertones paired with a pearly sheen. The texture was denser, thicker, and cream-like but felt more powder-like once it came into contact with my skin.

It applied best by pressing and patting it on as it did not diffuse as readily along the edges; the edge had a tendency to look a little ragged initially and took some effort to blend out. This shade lasted decently for eight hours before fading noticeably.

Draw a Door

Draw a Door is a darker, mustard yellow with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. It straddles that line between very yellowy green and greenish yellow. The texture was soft, more substantial but had some powderiness, so there was light fallout during application. It had opaque pigmentation that applied evenly and blended out without too much effort. It stayed on well for eight and a half hours before fading visibly.

Ingredients

ZINC STEARATE, MICA, DIMETHICONE, SYNTHETIC FLUORPHLOGOPITE, ETHYLHEXYL PALMITATE, SILICA, TALC, BORON NITRIDE, LAUROYL LYSINE, ZEA MAYS (CORN) STARCH, CALCIUM TITANIUM BOROSILICATE, CALCIUM SODIUM BOROSILICATE, ALUMINUM CALCIUM SODIUM SILICATE, PHENOXYETHANOL, HYDROGENATED SOYBEAN OIL, ACRYLATES COPOLYMER, BUTYROSPERMUM PARKII (SHEA) BUTTER, HYDROGENATED OLIVE OIL, HYDROGENATED JOJOBA OIL, GLYCINE SOJA (SOYBEAN) LIPIDS, TOCOPHERYL ACETATE, PHYTOSTEROLS, POLYETHYLENE, DISODIUM CARBOXYETHYL SILICONATE, TIN OXIDE, POLLULAN, SORBITOL, TREHALOSE, ACACIA SENEGAL GUM, HYDROGENATED POLYISOBUTENE, PALMITIC ACID. Neurotic

Neurotic is a bright, golden green with strong, warm undertones and a metallic finish. The eyeshadow was rich in pigment, while the texture was smooth, lightly creamy without being overly dense or thick, which helped it apply well to bare skin. It wore nicely for eight and a half hours before fading noticeably.

Ingredients

ZINC STEARATE, MICA, DIMETHICONE, SYNTHETIC FLUORPHLOGOPITE, ETHYLHEXYL PALMITATE, SILICA, TALC, BORON NITRIDE, LAUROYL LYSINE, ZEA MAYS (CORN) STARCH, CALCIUM TITANIUM BOROSILICATE, CALCIUM SODIUM BOROSILICATE, ALUMINUM CALCIUM SODIUM SILICATE, PHENOXYETHANOL, HYDROGENATED SOYBEAN OIL, ACRYLATES COPOLYMER, BUTYROSPERMUM PARKII (SHEA) BUTTER, HYDROGENATED OLIVE OIL, HYDROGENATED JOJOBA OIL, GLYCINE SOJA (SOYBEAN) LIPIDS, TOCOPHERYL ACETATE, PHYTOSTEROLS, POLYETHYLENE, DISODIUM CARBOXYETHYL SILICONATE, TIN OXIDE, POLLULAN, SORBITOL, TREHALOSE, ACACIA SENEGAL GUM, HYDROGENATED POLYISOBUTENE, PALMITIC ACID. Recently Deceased

Recently Deceased is a medium purple with subtlle, cool undertones and a satin finish. It had nearly opaque color payoff that was buildable to full coverage, but I found it easiest to achieve even, opaque results by patting it on with a fingertip. The texture was more emollient, thin but not thin to such a degree that it was hard to work with, and it blended out without too much effort. The eyeshadow showed signs of fading after eight hours of wear.

Ingredients

Lost Souls

Lost Souls is a brighter, medium purple with cooler undertones and a matte finish. It was more of a lost cause; it was a fussy purple due to the thinner, drier, and more powdery consistency that did not apply evenly to bare skin.

I had issue with the powder darkening in places and not building up in others, and this occurred over bare skin as well as over primer. It had medium coverage and a ton of fallout the more I tried to build it up. It stayed on for eight and a half hours before fading visibly and left a stain behind.

Little Accident

Little Accident is a medium-dark berry with subtle, cool undertones and a satin sheen. It had opaque color coverage in a single layer, which applied evenly to bare skin but had a tendency to look less shimmery after it was applied and blended on the skin.

Bio Exorcist

Bio Exorcist is a light-medium purple with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. It had semi-opaque, buildable color coverage that applied fairly evenly but had moderate fallout to apply and blend it out (even after tapping off the excess). The consistency was soft, moderately powdery, and a bit thinner. It lasted decently for eight and a half hours and left a faint stain behind.

That’s always the weakening factor for me – that Christine gets stunning eye looks from even the crummiest products or those where the colour pairings are not the greatest. That’s what always tempts me – seeing the results she is able to achieve!

Francesca Avatar

A part for the so-so quality for the price point, this is something outside my confort zone, but I enjoy soo much when creative people, like you, put out stunning innovative looks from unusual colour stories. Sadly, the quality is incostistent, a pity because this is something that really stands outs from the sea of warm toned neautral palettes

raja Avatar

Fool me twice, shame on me. Won’t fool me a third time. Love Melt’s color stories, and this one is right up my street, but after the huge disappointment that was the Muerte palette, I have to pass.

xamyx Avatar

I think this palette would have benefitted greatly if it included a deep, ultraviolet matte/satin, similar to “Hazmat” from the Radioactive palette in place of “Recently Deceased”. Making it a 10-pan with a matte black & pearl white would have been ideal, as well… That said, because I “collect” Melt palettes, and am a huge fan of Beetlejuice & Tim Burton, I don’t have any regrets purchasing the entire collection. Even with 2 similar shades, I’m quite certain both will get used, since green & purple is a longtime favorite combo of mine.

xamyx Avatar

Not that I’m aware of, which is even more odd since the components are the same size. It just seems like a missed opportunity to also do more with the other palette, like replace the black & white there with a matte true red, and a shimmery deep aubergine (while also replacing one of the grey’s with a taupe).

Genevieve Avatar

Yes, I do agree with you Christine, the four shades of the bottom row are far too similar to each other and were of inconsistent quality. Apart from the theme (which I think is in poor taste at the moment, given the pandemic) the standout shade for me was Paranormal – a beautiful green.

Z Avatar

Paranormal is a thing of beauty and it’s hard for me to find quality formulas in that color. Adore.

Overall though, swatched this looks cool, I’m not a big purple person and I hate that both of these palettes have good color stories with redundant shades. We don’t need a second Natasha Denona out here.
