Make Up For Ever M501 Artist Rouge Lipstick ($22.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a dark berry with pinky undertones and a semi-matte finish. Oddly, the lipstick had an iridescent green sheen to it (in the same way some of Urban Decay’s matte Vice lipsticks had!) but doesn’t actually have shimmer. It’s hard to find true matte berry-hued lipsticks, from my experience, as there aren’t too many dupes for this one. It had a smooth, velvety texture that didn’t tug as it applied, and it laid down color evenly. The consistency wasn’t as flat-matte as it could have been, but I think that helped it be more forgiving when applied. This shade wore nicely for over six hours and was neither drying nor hydrating. MAC Babes and Balls (LE, $19.00) is lighter (95% similar). Makeup Geek Rocker Chick (P, $12.00) is less pigmented, lower quality (95% similar). Givenchy Violine Retro (P, $37.00) is lighter, cooler, glossier (90% similar). ColourPop Alchemist (P, $10.00) is lighter (90% similar). NARS Zipped (LE, $27.00) is lighter, cooler (90% similar). Urban Decay CSB (DC, $18.00) is cooler (90% similar). ColourPop Doin' Fine (LE, $7.00) is lighter, cooler (90% similar). MAC Toung 'n' Chic (LE, $18.50) is lighter (90% similar). Smashbox Femme Fatale (P, $21.00) is cooler (90% similar). ColourPop Persuasion (LE, $7.00) is lighter, cooler (85% similar). MAC Fallen Angel (LE, $21.00) is darker (90% similar). MAC Oh Lady (P, $21.00) is cooler, less glossy (90% similar). Pat McGrath Deep Orchid (P, $38.00) is lighter, glossier (90% similar). MAC Got a Callback (P, $26.00) is lighter, cooler (85% similar). FORMULA OVERVIEW | Make Up For Ever Artist Rouge Lipstick ($22.00 for 0.12 oz.) is supposed to be long-wearing, “extremely pigmented,” and hydrating. It is available in two finishes–Cream and Matte, indicated by the C or M in the beginning of each shade’s name. The Cream formula is richly pigmented, lightly creamy without being too emollient or slippery, and go on smoothly and feel good while worn (wear ranges from four to eight hours, depending on the shade). The Matte formula is thinner and clings somewhat to lips, though it goes on nicely and doesn’t tug, and it doesn’t always look flattering on as it can emphasize imperfections on my lips but really depends on the shade, as some look great on. I found the Cream formula to be moderately hydrating, while the Matte formula was slightly to moderately drying. All shades had a slight, rosy scent to them, though I didn’t notice any taste.

I love #501. It looks very velvety without being a super flat liquid matte product. I think this one definitely has to go on my buy list.
Yes, velvety is definitely the way to describe the texture of these!
Oh my goodness, just when you think it can’t get any better, it does! All the brands are killing it with lipsticks this year, BITE, UD, Maybelline, and now MUFE. A lipstick addict doesn’t stand a chance. I’ve been looking for a color like M501 for a while, so it’s going on my must buy list. And M500 is the kind of color that makes me weak in the knees, already have some dupes for it, but it might sneak it’s way into my cart in a moment of weakness.
Soooo many lipsticks!!
Not a bad color in the bunch! I’m not sure I could justify buying any of these right now, but I am definitely tempted…
At least they’re permanent!
501 is a lovely choice. I’m worried about them being drying though!
Aww!
Beautiful set.
Agreed!
All 3 look to be very even and well pigmented. M501 and M500 are definitely up my proverbial alley as deep reds and plummy-berry shades tend to be for me. Which has me wondering if I might have something close enough in my stash to skip. I’ll be checking!
I bet you have something close!
These aren’t available at my local Sephora yet, unfortunately; I’d like to swatch before purchasing, but M501 does look like it would be a good color for me, but I won’t like it if it’s very drying; hopefully a primer will take care of that I don’t like the packaging nearly as well as the packaging on the old Rouge Artist lipsticks. I don’t usually care all that much about packaging, but the old Rouge Artist simple, graphic square tubes were favorites of mine. As is the formula. I could do without the scent, though, wish they’d ditched that!
I believe August for stores!
The first two lipsticks are beautiful – these are the colours I would wear.
Yay! 🙂
500 an 501 are beautiful! Are there any duo chrome qualities to 501?
No, they are matte and have no shimmer.
I just knew they’d all look stunning on you! <3
Thank you!
M500 is gorgeous! I love reds like that!
Yay!
Good thing I decided, what … three or four pages ago?… that I’m going to cull my lipstick and not buy anything else — ever — even remotely similar to what I have. In fact, I’ve narrowed my current list of future purchases down to Bite Beauty’s Kale and Squid Ink, and a number of other unusual choices; despite that, my “to buy” list and still has 16 lipsticks, 2 lip tints, and 4 tinted lip balms on it. [sigh]
And none of them are M501, which breaks my heart a little, but oh well.
Haha! Good luck destashing 😉
Hello! Can you recommend a matching lipliner for a #501?
I’m not sure – not really familiar with that many lip liners!
