MAC The Matte Lip Collection (2015) Review, Photos, Swatches (Part 3)

MAC Stone Lipstick

MAC Stone Lipstick ($16.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “muted grayish taupe brown [with a Matte finish].” It’s a muted, medium-dark taupe brown with subtle, warm undertones and a semi-matte finish. It had rich, opaque color coverage with a lightly creamy consistency with a light-medium thickness that covers well. The color lasted for four and a half hours and was neither drying nor hydrating. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

MAC Whirl Lipstick ($16.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “dirty rose [with a Matte finish].” It’s a muted, medium-dark rosy brown with warm undertones and a matte finish. It had full color coverage that applied evenly and smoothly. The texture was lightly creamy and didn’t tug or pull at the lips during application. The color wore well for four and a half hours but was a little drying. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

MAC Velvet Teddy Lipstick ($16.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “deep-tone beige [with a Matte finish].” It’s a muted, light-medium rosy beige with a hint of brown and warm undertones. It had a more satin finish–there’s a very subtle sheen to it for the first two hours of wear, before it wears to a more matte finish. It had nice color payoff with a smooth, creamy texture that glided on evenly. This shade lasted for four and a half hours on me and was neither drying nor hydrating. I remember this being a go-to beige for me when I first started wearing lipstick. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

MAC Persistence Lipstick ($16.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “peachy cinnamon [with a Matte finish].” It’s a subdued, medium brown with warm, reddish-orange undertones and a matte finish. It had mostly opaque color coverage, and it had the same creamy, almost velvety consistency (feels like it has silicones in it) that glides on and doesn’t tug. This shade wore well for five hours and was a smidgen drying. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

MAC Kinda Sexy Lipstick ($16.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “neutral pinky rose [with a Matte finish].” It’s a softened, medium rosy beige with warm undertones and a satin finish. It had fairly opaque color payoff, and the texture was really creamy, so it was easy to apply, though it didn’t go on as evenly. On me, this shade stayed on for four and a half hours and was neither drying nor hydrating. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

MAC Naturally Transformed Lipstick ($16.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “muted golden beige [with a Matte finish].” It’s a light-medium, yellowed beige with a matte finish. It had good color coverage with a lightly creamy consistency, but the texture was thick enough that it seemed to settle into lip lines without smoothing them out. After four hours of wear, the color had pulled and separated into the lip lines noticeably. It was a smidgen drying over time. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

oooooh girl it’s reminding me of the 90s up in here with some of them brown lips! But seriously though I love all of these.

I’m so excited for Stone! I can’t resist taupey nude lipsticks. I just hope it looks good on me and not too much like everything else I own. (I also hope that I can recycle my depots for a lippie)

Nothing in this bunch is screaming at me. But, I think that is because I associate these tones with fall. I will probably consider Stone, whirl, and kinda sexy, and persistence at some point. I have Velvet teddy and really don’t find that I care for it on myself. So maybe this brown tone I just don’t like on me. I’ll want to try these on at the counter. Christine, do you feel like these are pulling into your lip lines. I noticed it’s not noted in your writing. But, no offense , it looks like it a bit. It just may be the nature of the matte formula? Or these brownish colors?

Stunned at how much I love Stone!!! Also really LOVE Whirl a whole lot! I have already tried on Kinda Sexy and Velvet Teddy at MAC stores, but found that they just didn’t look good on me without lip liner and gloss. Bummer. Then again, when I do a nude lip, it does have to have dimension.
As for Naturally Transformed….just NO. What were they smoking when they decided to make THAT shade?!?

xamyx Avatar

I’m sure many would say the same about Stone, LOL! Some people have really strong yellow undertones, so Naturally Transformed would be a great nude option.

Nancy T Avatar

It just doesn’t look smooth, and it actually appears quite dry compared to the others. Perhaps it would work well with a gloss?
My complexion does have a lot of yellow in it, the foundation I was matched to is MAC Studio Fix (liquid) in C4.5, a more neutral leaning version of the NC category. It seems to have both yellow and brown undertones? But that’s exactly *why* I wouldn’t wear this one, it would give me TRUE concealer-lips, LOL!

Lotus Avatar

Again, you pull all off! 🙂 These colors just will not work on my lips! I’m glad so many are happy with them, though! Yay! 🙂

These are all beautiful browns, except for Naturally Transformed. I don’t like how yellow it is. I don’t think I could pull it off. It looks good on you though, Christine. You’re skin is warm enough to make it work.

The photos of you wearing these makes me like them so much. I would love to be able to look OK with these shades, but the ones sort of like them I’ve tried haven’t done anything for me. I will try these, and I hope Kinda Sexy will look good enough, I would love to have it, it’s so pretty on you, and I love the name 🙂

xamyx Avatar

I like the idea of Stone & Whirl, but I think they may be too dark for what I’m going for. Then again, I have to layer MAC lipstick with something else, so if I can find a matte/cream white lipstick, they may work out…

Nancy T Avatar

Not sure whether you’ve seen MAC Pro Lip Mix, but they DO have white! Great for customizing your lippys to how you like them. HTH!

IRockFaces Avatar

I finally liked all the shades on this page for once. Lol go Mac. I just have to get stone and whirl even if they sell out on the rest. So gorgeous!

Nilu Avatar

Hi ,

Which colours from this new collection would be suitable for my indian olive skin tone?

Im in Mozambique and i would love to get some of these colours ( maybe 4 from this collection) online.

Thanks

Bonnie Avatar

I love most of these!!! Super excited about them and so glad my favorites (the more unique shades) got A range grades! Not too shabby for MAC. I think you pull off the more-difficult-to-pull-off shades extremely well!!! I love Stone and Whirl and Vevet Teddy but would never consider Naturally Transformed – but it actually looks great on you, and I thought it wouldn’t look good on anyone!

Valerie Avatar

Are these at the mac counters, because I need that Whirl lipstick ! I love the lip liner !! and are these permanent or limited edition?

Oriana Avatar

Are all these matte lipsticks going to be permanent? 😀 I know some are already permanent, but the new ones are they going to be permanent? I hope so 🙂

Melissa Avatar

Hi Christine. Thank you so much for the reviews! You ought to know that I rarely buy a lipstick without reading the reviews on your site first and how it looks on you. I enjoy Matte lipsticks, but my lips are terribly dry, some days are better than others, but I have to take extra steps to moisturize them. What kind of lip prep do you do? Do you lip balms before putting on a matte lipstick? Any tips would be much appreciated.

Christine Avatar

I don’t do anything prior to applying lipstick, since I am testing it for wear, texture, etc. that anything layered underneath would alter how it wears, so I just apply from the tube with no prep. I wear lip balm at night, but otherwise I usually am testing product during the day 🙂 In general, I would recommend exfoliating first, then applying a lip balm, then blotting/wiping away most of the lip balm and using a lip brush to apply the matte lipstick (will tug and aggravate your lips less)!

Mara Avatar

In the new web page of MAC is not possible see the lipstick by finish, they just show 185 rectangles of differents color, what a not profesional change!
Why change for some thing worse or incomplet.

Victoria Avatar

Hi Christine! I was wondering how Whirl compares to “tabla,” “double shot,” and “mocha” by mac. Are any of those very similar in color to whirl?
