So Superb, It’s Been Reviewed Twice!

MAC Superb Extra Dimension Skinfinish ($29.00 for 0.31 oz.) is described as a “soft peach nude with multidimensional shimmer.” It’s a soft, medium champagne-shimmered peach-brown. It has a high-shine finish that’s almost metallic, depending on how heavily you apply it. Guerlain Terra Inca is similar, more metallic. Bobbi Brown Beach is lighter. MAC Redhead is pinker. Bobbi Brown Rose Gold is a bit more frosted.

I reviewed Superb when it originally launched earlier this year in March. For a more in-depth review, I’d encourage you to read this post. I wanted to roll out improved photos, since I know this is a rather anticipated repromote. All of the photos and swatches are of the most recently released version (that came out with Glamour Daze), which is exactly the same as the originally released version. I re-tested the wear, and it lasted around eight hours with some minor fading along the edges (same as when I tested it before).

If you want to tone down the finish, I suggest using a stippling brush (like MAC’s 188) and lightly dusting it over the areas you want to highlight.  There’s enough color that it can be used as a blusher or bronzer (depending on your skin tone), but you’ll definitely get a greater sheen that way.  If you want a really metallic look, try applying it with a damp brush.

I’ve had Whisper of Gilt since it’s original launch, but I missed this one, and I have regretted that ever since a certain other vlogger/blogger/MUA who you are friends with proved via professional swatch cards that it is a nearly perfect dupe for Estee Lauder’s Gelee, Modern Mercury. I have the other 2 EL Gelees, and the similarity between that formula and this one is astounding. Since MM has been discontinued for about a year now (and sells for insane prices on eBay), I desperately wanted Superb! I AM NOT DISAPPOINTED!! When I want a golden highlighter, I reach for New Vegas MSF 9 times out of 10 (or more), but this pink-ish, smooth gel-based formula is really beautiful.

Yes! I love it, actually. I’d never really used my Whipser of Gilt or the EL Gelees much (MSF junkie!), but I’m finding myself using this one every day. The pink-ish tone just seems so flattering to all skin types, warm or cool; pale or deep. LOVE IT! I actually got quite greedy and got most of this collection (5 lipsticks, 3 fluidlines, 3 blushes, 5 eyeshadows…) and I’m thrilled with most, and satisfied with the rest, except the dang Fluidlines! I have discovered the pink liner can be used as a glittery cream shadow and it resembles Bobbi Brown’s Pink Oyster quite closely, but Bobbi Brown’s cream shadow is vastly superior in texture. Catch My Eye isn’t too bad… I wonder what they were thinking with those crazy glitterbombs?

Thank you for reminding me this is really similar to Modern Mercury!! that was why I didin’t get Superb the first time but it is so pretty that I am tempted to get it but I will have to restrain myself

Had to snatch this up. Hooray payday. LOL. Just grabbed this and Mac Cubic. I had to get this… it just looks so rose gold and I’m a sucker for rose gold.

It’s really a pretty color, but I think it emphasizes pores a little bit. I’ll pass and stick to my favorite highlighters (theBalm Mary-Lou Manizer and Bobbi Brown Shimmer Bricks)!

I Passed this up last time it was out and totally regretted it! So I went and picked up mine this morning. Thank you Christine for everything you do because if it wasn’t for you I wouldn’t have known this was coming back out 🙂

I hate that they call it Limited Edition and then re-promote it. I got Superb earlier this year and bought a back-up this week and I do love it, but when I bought it before I thought I was getting something “rare and special!” Oh, well!

Sooooo disappointed. Was looking forward to getting Glorify. I wonder why they didn’t re-promote it. I missed all the ED MSF’s the first time round. When I heard they were being re-promoted, I was super excited!! Not anymore ! : (

FAB FAB FAB review as always! I was just wondering though… I’m NC15 (UBER pale!) but I can also wear NW15 as I have a neautral skin tone. I just prefer to wear NC most of the time… usually I use soft & gentle or the cream colour base in pearl to highlight but I’m tempted by either superb or whisper of gilt… I want a strong highlight look to wear over the holiday season. Which one would you recommend? xxx

You’re getting prettier the longer you do this website business. Interesting. I don’t think it’s the cosmetics…I think it’s the joy behind the makeup that your job/passion gives you.

Christine, I just picked up superb and tried using it both dry and wet but I cant see to get the color to show up on me. I’m about an NC42 so I know it’s probably because of my skintone but can you suggest anyway to help the color pop more. I want to use it as more of a blush than highlight. 🙁

kolorkoded Avatar

Thank you for the review Christine. I think I will pick up Superb and it should go with my NC 45 skin perfectly. I like that dewy glow it gave you and I hope it gives me a dewy glow I’ve been searching for as well! 🙂

Hi, Jade! I have the same skin tone as you, except I’m NW15, but we’re both pale. I have both Superb and Whisper of Guilt but I bought them back in June when they originally launched. I think that Superb is a gorgeous rose gold and I definitely don’t think it’ll be too noticeable. I use it as a blush and it’s very pretty. I wouldn’t buy it if you want to use it as a highlighter. I think that Whisper of Guilt is very pretty too, however I’ve never used mine! I’m trying to go through my other products before I start that one.

I missed out on these MSFs the first time around so I bought both Superb & Whisper of Gilt this time. I actually prefer Superb, which I wasn’t expecting, and am taking WOG back or selling it. Superb has a much nicer tone to it & doesn’t magnify my pores quite as much. It also looks gorgeous with or without blush because of the slightly pinkish tone it has to it. I like layering it overtop of blush with just a bit more higher up on my cheekbones as a highlight. I’ve found it works better using a stippling brush with just a bit of Natural MSF in Light Plus on top of it to dampen the effect it can have on imperfections & pores. It still shows through & gives a gorgeous glow to the face. I was expecting to love WOG & preordered Superb at the last minute. Very glad I did as it’s now one of my favorite highlighters with an extra kick.
