MAC Whisper of Gilt Extra Dimension Skinfinish
Highlight with a Whisper of Gilt
MAC Whisper of Gilt Extra Dimension Skinfinish ($29.00 for 0.31 oz.) is described as a “light soft white gold with shimmery sheen.” It’s a lightly warmed-up champagne gold with yellow undertones and a very gilded sheen. Shimmery and high-shine, it’s not quite metallic (unless used damp/wet), the finish will highlight easily. Chanel Routes des Indes de Chanel is yellower. Guerlain Terracotta in the Sun is darker, yellower.
I reviewed Whisper of Gilt when it originally launched earlier this year in March. For a more in-depth review, I’d encourage you to read this post. I wanted to roll out improved photos, since I know this is a rather anticipated repromote. All of the photos and swatches are of the most recently released version (that came out with Glamour Daze), which is exactly the same as the originally released version. I also re-tested this shade for wear, and it wore for eight hours with some visible light fading along the edges.

PPermanent. $42.00.

Still the prettiest gal in the new tri-blend formula coming from Italy.
Another potential dupe: MAC’s New Vegas MSF, but that slightly darker and a less yellow-based gold; also, the particles are larger on the skin. Since New Vegas was discontinued last in 2007, it’s more of an “if you already have New Vegas then maybe you don’t need this” thing. 😉
Thanks, Ruca!
Curious as to how these compare to Bobbi Brown Shimmer Bricks?
Different texture, less metallic.
Thank you- I love the shimmer bricks but these cost less.. and look similar to me.
Totally agree! Less metallic and oh so lovely! It’s sold out on MAC’s website, but Macy’s & Nordie’s online both have them (haven’t looked on Bloomie’s). Strongly recommend this. Bobbi’s bricks are heavy metallics compared to this.
I missed out on this one last time so maybe I will grab one this time! It looks SUPER gorgeous on you!
Christine, Would you recommend Whisper of Gilt or Superb as being a more suitable for those with deeper skintones NW40-45 and darker….
Are you looking for a highlighter or more of a highlighter-bronzer-blusher? I think both will work as highlighters, Superb will add a little more warmth.
I’m looking for more of a highlighter. 🙂
i wonder why they don’t make this permanent, come on mac 🙁
Can this be applied with fingers or is it better with a brush?
I’m sure you could apply it with fingers if you wanted!
Christine! Love your skin and make up here- purples really make your eyes pop 🙂 I got myself the Whisper of Guilt and it seems if used with a light hand it offers a beautiful sheen with a heavy hand it is metallic….
Can you dupe your glow of the Wulong Pressed Powder with the Dragon Meteorites ? Thanks x
Kind of – it’s not quite the same, but it’s not TOTALLY different!
You really suit these shimmery gold numbers on your cheeks. You look all glowy gorgeous! I love your whole look in this series of photos.
Hi Christine! Thanks for the great review. How do these compare in terms of highlighting power to the Dior Skinshimmers (Amber Diamond especially) I’m trying to choose between this one and Dior.
Thanks!
Amber Diamond is more subtle, finer.
Hi Christine… I’m about NC 30 -35 in Mac, yellow undertone. Which should I get… Whisper of guilt or Superb? Thanks in advance.
Whisper of Gilt!
I’ve been using Whisper of Gilt since purchasing last summer. I love it. I also have Superb and use it depending on the look I’m doing for the day — warm or cool. It is an exceptional highlighter, gives great dimension without heavy sparkle or shimmer. Very light in its application and so flattering.
Christine, I have both soft and gentle and champagne Mineralize skinfinishes. Are these similar and if no, which one would you recommend for someone like your skin tone? THX!!!
Kind of – the shimmer is finer here, and Whisper of Gilt is yellower!
Very nice but I would prefer this as eyeshadow 🙂 .
The description uses the phrase “unless worn wet/damp” how would someone do this. My indecisive self was at Mac Macy’s and the Mac store debating on whether to buy this (haven’t yet, but might today) and both makeup artists pretty emphatically told me that these are not like the mineralize powders and to be very careful not to wet them at all. Also, do you think these show up more or less on the skin than the lustre drops by Mac?
You can either pick up the product, then spritz your brush with water, or you can spritz the brush with water, then pick up the product (I do the latter). I haven’t had any problems using these wet! Estee Lauder’s Pure Gelee is pretty much the same formula (and MAC is owned by EL), and they’re wet/dry. MAC’s website is less detailed in descriptions than EL’s. They will have a stronger sheen the the Lustre Drops.
Ooh this is pretty! Christine do you think this would work on someone very fair (lightest shade in almost every foundation) with red/rosy undertones?
Yes!
How does this compare to Chez Chez Lame?
This is a bit darker!
Hi Christine, I own MAC Whisper of Gilt already and I love it! I really want to get the Dior Amber Diamonds highlighter too after hearing all the rave reviews but I’m scared they may be too similar? Do you think it’s worth owning both? Help!
I think I’d pass if you already have Whisper of Gilt! They’re not dupes exactly, but they’ll look similar on.
Christine I have this one, I bought it when it first came out and now it has some dark spots on it, mainly where I swipe the brush. Do you think this is normal or should I be concern? Thanks
I’m thinking it might be any oiliness from your skin or foundation that might have gotten on the blush!
