MAC Nordstrom's Finest Eyeshadow Palette Review, Photos, Swatches

MAC Nordstrom's Finest Eyeshadow Palette
MAC Nordstrom’s Finest Eyeshadow Palette

MAC Nordstrom’s Finest Eyeshadow Palette ($85.00 for 0.68 oz.) includes fifteen eyeshadows, with each being full-sized (the palette is the same size as the empty 15-pan palettes MAC sells). Many of MAC’s pre-made palettes are misses, but I think that the larger 15-pan pre-made palettes (like this one) are better and decent to good. For the price of MAC, it’s not bad, but it is a decent amount to pay for a palette, even if there are 15 full-sized eyeshadows included in it. I do wish MAC would consider making the pans removable, as I think it would offer a lot more functionality as a user or to create smaller, travel-friendly quads for trips and the like. I think this palette is okay; there are three duds that really bring down the overall score significantly (e.g. Carbon), while the rest are more B to A- in ratings. The palette contains an assortment of permanent shades as well as limited edition/exclusive shades, though some of the shades in this palette that may seem new were released in the Gravitas palette, which was limited edition (Soft Brown, Luscious, Carbon, Persuade, Plummed are repeats). I believe only Chains of Love and Felt haven’t been released before (based on my log of MAC eyeshadows).

Beaded is described as a “light golden beige.” It’s a muted, light-medium gold with hints of brown–almost like a tarnished gold–and soft frost finish. It had good pigmentation and a fairly soft, smooth consistency that was easy to work with on the lid. The color lasted for eight hours before fading on me. MAC Unwind (P, $16.00) is darker. Sleek MakeUP Meet in Madrid (LE, $9.99) is more shimmery. MAC Until Dawn #2 (LE, $21.00) is lighter. Cle de Peau Stellar Gaze #1 (P, ) is cooler. Makeup Geek Bleached Blonde (P, $5.99) is more shimmery. Too Faced Honey Pot (LE, $16.00) is more shimmery, lighter. Chanel Oiseaux de Nuit #5 (LE, ) is less shimmery, darker. Tarte Dare to Be Gold (LE, ) is more shimmery, darker, brighter. Tarte Go for the Gold (LE, ) is more muted. Cle de Peau Satin Moon #1 (P, ) is darker. Viseart Orangerie (P, ) is darker. NARS Hollywoodland (P, $28.00) is more shimmery, lighter. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

Goldmine is described as an “intense gold with shimmer.” It’s a brightened, light-medium yellow gold with warm undertones and a frosted sheen. It had good color coverage, though my older permanent version seemed a bit denser and more pigmented, but it blended and adhered well to the lid and wasn’t a fuss to work with. The color lasted for eight hours. Sleek MakeUP Sunset #5 (P, $9.99) is more shimmery, brighter. Tarina Tarantino Mr. Gold (P, ) is lighter. theBalm #40 (P, $6.50) is lighter, brighter, cooler. MAC Bao Bao’s Jewels #2 (LE, ) is more shimmery, brighter. Marc Jacobs Beauty The Siren #4 (LE, ) is lighter, brighter. Make Up For Ever ME406 Golden (P, $21.00) is less shimmery. Make Up For Ever ME406 Golden (P, $21.00) is less shimmery. Makeup Geek Fortune Teller (P, $9.99) is more shimmery, brighter. Gucci Beauty Oro (P, $37.00) is lighter. Milani Bella Gold (22) (P, $4.49) is lighter. LORAC Unlimited (P, ) is less shimmery. Guerlain Petrouchka #2 (LE, ) is less shimmery, darker. MAC Amberluxe #2 (P, ) is darker, warmer. MAC Sunny Outlook (P, $21.00) is less shimmery, more pigmented, brighter, more muted. MAC Gorgeous Gold (P, $16.00) is darker, brighter, warmer. First 15 dupes listed, see more: See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

Chains of Love is described as a “mid-tone coined bronze.” It’s a brightened, dark brown with warm, yellowed bronze shimmer that gives it an almost metallic-like finish. It was intensely pigmented with a really smooth, blendable consistency that applied nicely and lasted for eight and a half hours on me before fading. MAC Cognac (LE, $16.00) is darker. MAC Museum Bronze (P, $21.00) is less shimmery, darker, warmer. Urban Decay Smog (P, $18.00) is more shimmery. Too Faced Buttered Rum (LE, $16.00) is warmer. Urban Decay Deeper (LE, $18.00) is less shimmery, darker. Dior Golden Flower #4 (LE, ) is lighter. LORAC Nude #6 (LE, ) is darker. Make Up For Ever D640 Golden Snake (P, $21.00) is darker. Make Up For Ever ME644 Iced Brown (P, $21.00) is darker. Make Up For Ever ME658 Golden Brown (P, $21.00) is less shimmery, darker. Makeup Geek Poker Face (P, $6.99) is lighter, warmer. Makeup Geek Pretentious (P, $5.99) is less shimmery, warmer. Hello Kitty Chocolate Chip (LE, ) is more shimmery, brighter. ColourPop Eve (LE, $5.00) is more shimmery, lighter. ColourPop Blaze (LE, $5.00) is more shimmery. First 15 dupes listed, see more: See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

Cork is described as a “muted golden brown.” It’s a medium brown with warm, yellow undertones and a matte finish. The texture has a very soft, finely-milled feel to it but isn’t powdery to work with, and the color payoff was mostly opaque. It wore well for eight hours on me. theBalm Allegro (P, $16.00) is darker. LORAC Brown (LE, ) is lighter. theBalm Sultry (P, $16.00) is cooler. Too Faced Fawned of You (LE, $16.00) is lighter. theBalm Score (LE, $16.00) is lighter. theBalm #44 (P, $6.50) is lighter. Becca Ombre Nudes #3 (P, ) is lighter, cooler. Becca Ombre Nudes #2 (P, ) is lighter. Kat Von D Samael (P, ) is cooler. LORAC Undeniable (P, ) is lighter. Sephora + Pantone Universe Carob Brown (LE, ) is brighter. Tarte Wanderer (LE, ) is lighter. Urban Decay Fix (LE, $18.00) is cooler. Buxom Gimme Gorgeous (P, $12.00) is darker, less pigmented. MAC Soba (P, $16.00) is more muted, warmer, lighter. First 15 dupes listed, see more: See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

Persuade is described as a “mid-tone cool grey brown.” It’s a muted, dark taupe brown with subtle, warmer undertones and a matte finish. It had semi-opaque color coverage, which was buildable in practice, and it was blendable despite having a slightly dusty consistency. It lasted for almost eight hours on me before fading noticeably. MAC Just Before Dawn (LE, $21.00) is more shimmery, darker. bareMinerals Head Over Heels (LE, ) is cooler. Chanel Charming #5 (LE, ) is darker, cooler. Burberry Graphite (No. 28) (P, $29.00) is darker, cooler. Make Up For Ever M106 Slate (P, $21.00) is darker, cooler. Burberry Storm Grey (No. 27) (P, $29.00) is cooler. MAC Lofty (LE, $16.00) is more shimmery. Urban Decay Defy (LE, $18.00) is darker, cooler. Kat Von D Saleos (P, ) is more shimmery, darker. Hourglass Atmosphere #5 (P, ) is darker, cooler. Milani Bella Taupe (05) (P, $4.49) is lighter, cooler. Viseart Tabac (P, ) is more pigmented, warmer. Viseart Cendre (P, ) is cooler. bareMinerals Fuze (LE, ) is darker, cooler. ColourPop Downtown (LE, $5.00) is more muted. First 15 dupes listed, see more: See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

Retrospeck is described as a “beached blonde.” It’s a lightened, light-medium gold with warm, yellow undertones and a frosted sheen paired with slight bits of larger gold sparkle–this seemed significantly less sparkly and “chunky” compared to the permanent version of Retrospeck, which has a lot of fall out. It had nearly opaque coverage, which is actually odd, since Lustres are designed to have sheerer coverage. Tom Ford Beauty Naked Bronze (Eye Color) (LE, ) is less shimmery. Dior Golden Shock #3 (LE, ) is less shimmery. Dior Rivage #4 (LE, ) is darker. Chanel Convoitise (90) (LE, $36.00) is more shimmery. Dior Golden Flower #3 (LE, ) is less shimmery. Too Faced Moon on Their Wings (LE, $16.00) is darker. Stila Wheat (, $18.00) is darker. MAC 2x Dare #2 (LE, ) is darker. MAC Until Dawn #2 (LE, $21.00) is less shimmery, warmer. L’Oreal Eternal Sunshine (P, $7.99) is darker, warmer. Sleek MakeUP Meet in Madrid (LE, $9.99) is darker, warmer. Dior Golden Snow #2 (LE, ) is lighter. Chanel Harmonie du Soir #1 (LE, ) is darker, warmer. Benefit Bikini-tini (P, $10.00) is warmer. View dupes side-by-side.

Greensmoke is described as a “tarnished olive.” It’s a muted, dark olive brown with lighter green and gold shimmer that gives it a pearly sheen. There is some chunkier gold sparkle that doesn’t bind with the base color that gets dusted away as soon as you blend it. The texture had a very firm press to it, which made getting color difficult without really jabbing at the surface. It started to fade noticeably after seven hours of wear. Dior Jardin #3 (P, ) is more muted. Charlotte Tilbury Veruschka (P, $32.00) is less shimmery, more muted. Guerlain Khaki Mono (07) (P, $34.00) is less shimmery. Hourglass Color Field #5 (P, ) is more muted. Chanel Tisse Fantaisie #3 (LE, ) is darker. Kat Von D Division (LE, ) is less shimmery, darker. Laura Mercier Pewter (P, $22.00) is more shimmery, darker. Cle de Peau Stardust #4 (P, ) is less shimmery, more muted. Make Up For Ever D320 Golden Khaki (P, $21.00) is less shimmery, more muted. Dior Pied de Poule #5 (P, ) is lighter. MAC Cool Companions #2 (LE, ) is darker, warmer. theBalm #30 (P, $6.50) is darker. theBalm D4 (LE, $16.00) is less shimmery. theBalm #42 (P, $6.50) is less shimmery. theBalm Lead Zeppelin (P, $16.00) is warmer. First 15 dupes listed, see more: compare dupes side-by-side.

Felt is described as a “cool neutral army green.” It’s a subtly, olive-tinged brown with warmer undertones and a matte finish. It had so-so pigmentation in one layer, though it was somewhat buildable, and the texture was soft enough that I think using primer would help amp up the payoff. This shade wore well for eight hours on me, but it could have been slightly more blendable. Urban Decay Secret Service (P, $18.00) is darker. Urban Decay Faint (P, $18.00) is warmer. MAC Deep Brown (P, $21.00) is darker. Urban Decay Dare (LE, $18.00) is lighter. Hourglass Atmosphere #4 (P, ) is darker. Tarte Dreamer (LE, ) is darker. MAC Aromatic (P, $16.00) is lighter. Tarte Sweet Tea (LE, ) is lighter. Becca Ombre Nudes #4 (P, ) is lighter. Buxom Big Spender (P, $12.00) is warmer. Too Faced Sexpresso (P, $16.00) is darker. Smashbox Moss (LE, ) is darker. Rouge Bunny Rouge Umber Fire Finch (P, $19.00) is more shimmery, cooler. Urban Decay Primal (P, $18.00) is lighter. Urban Decay Rewind (LE, $18.00) is lighter. First 15 dupes listed, see more: See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

Print is described as a “muted grey with shimmer.” It’s a dark, charcoal gray with subtle, cooler undertones and a satiny finish. The shimmer is hardly noticeable, and it really functions more as a semi-matte product on the lid–not totally flat but not really shimmery or reflective. It had good pigmentation with a soft, blendable texture, though it was a little firmer in the pan. The color started to fade after eight hours on me. MAC Double Feature #7 #2 (LE, $16.00) is darker. MAC Gravel (LE, $16.00) is darker. MAC Gravel (LE, $16.00) is darker. MAC Typographic (P, $16.00) is darker. MAC Nehru (P, $16.00) is cooler. MAC Cinder (Right) (LE, ) is darker. YSL Avant Garde #3 (P, ) is more shimmery. theBalm #26 (P, $6.50) is cooler. Tom Ford Beauty Ice Queen #4 (P, ) is lighter, cooler. Makeup Geek Paparazzi (P, $6.99) is lighter. Kat Von D Siouxsie-sioux (P, ) is more shimmery, darker. Urban Decay Desperation (P, $18.00) is more shimmery. Guerlain Les Gris #1 (P, ) is darker, cooler. Kat Von D Dark Throne (LE, ) is darker. bareMinerals Panorama (LE, ) is lighter. First 15 dupes listed, see more: See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

Carbon is described as an “intense black.” It’s a medium black with a matte finish. This shade is notoriously difficult to use with a firmer press, spotty color payoff, and is often difficult to blend. I think it applies better than it looks, but it’s not a great shade even in application. I wish MAC would consider including Typographic, which is a slightly lighter black but infinitely better in texture. NARS Shade VI (LE, $25.00) is darker. NARS Filbuste (P, $28.00) is less glossy. LORAC Jet Black (P, ) is darker, more pigmented, better quality. Smashbox Blackout (P, ) is less shimmery. Buxom LBD (P, $12.00) is darker. Le Metier de Beaute Onyx (LE, $30.00) is darker. Make Up For Ever S102 Onyx (P, $21.00) is less shimmery. Anastasia Coal (LE, $12.00) is darker. MAC Overnight (LE, $16.00) is more muted. Marc Jacobs Beauty The Enigma #1 (P, ) is cooler. Too Faced Licorice (P, $16.00) is darker. Kat Von D Killing Moon (LE, ) is . Tarte Fashionista (LE, ) is darker. Anastasia Noir (P, $12.00) is lighter. Too Faced Santa’s Boots (LE, $16.00) is darker. First 15 dupes listed, see more: compare dupes side-by-side.

Orb is described as a “soft peachy-beige.” It’s a soft, light beige with a hint of peach and a matte finish. It had fairly good pigmentation with a soft, blendable consistency that adhered well to bare skin. On me, it showed signs of fading after seven and a half hours of wear. Make Up For Ever M532 Sugar Coated Candy (P, $21.00) is darker. bareMinerals Promise (P, ) is darker, cooler. Too Faced Dainty (LE, $16.00) is cooler. Kat Von D South (LE, ) is darker. Too Faced White Chocolate (P, $16.00) is darker. theBalm B1 (LE, $16.00) is darker. LORAC Cream (P, ) is darker, cooler. MAC Bisque (DC, $16.00) is cooler. Inglot #355 (P, $6.00) is brighter. Hourglass Infinity #1 (P, ) is warmer. Anastasia Fresh (P, $12.00) is darker. Tarte Vanilla Candles (LE, ) is darker, warmer. MAC Fancy Dress (LE, $16.00) is cooler. NARS Shade I (LE, $25.00) is darker. Hourglass Color Field #1 (P, ) is lighter. First 15 dupes listed, see more: See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

Luscious is described as a “neutral bronze.” It’s a brightened, orange-copper with lighter copper sparkle and gold shimmer. It had decent to good pigmentation with a slightly drier consistency (possibly just due to the sparkly content) that was fairly blendable but could have sat better on the skin. It lasted for eight hours with some fall out.
NYX Liquid Gold (P, $6.00) is less shimmery. Viseart Marais (P, ) is lighter, warmer. Viseart Beaux-Arts (P, ) is less shimmery, darker. Zoeva Pure Ganache (P, ) is lighter, brighter, warmer. LORAC Nude #2 (LE, ) is more shimmery, lighter. Kat Von D Summerfly (P, ) is lighter. First 15 dupes listed, see more: view dupes side-by-side.

Soft Brown is described as a “soft golden peachy brown.” It’s a muted, medium-dark brown with warm undertones and a matte finish. It had good pigmentation with a soft, silky consistency that was very easy to work with. The color lasted for eight hours on me. Viseart Dark Matte #3 (P, ) is warmer. Buxom Filthy Rich (P, $12.00) is darker. Zoeva Freshly Toasted (P, ) is lighter, warmer. Make Up For Ever M600 Pink Brown (P, $21.00) is lighter, warmer. Kat Von D Wrath (P, ) is more muted, cooler. Kat Von D Wrath (P, ) is more muted, cooler. Makeup Geek Frappe (P, $5.99) is darker. Makeup Geek Latte (P, $5.99) is darker. First 15 dupes listed, see more: compare dupes side-by-side.

Trax is described as a “burgundy-plum with shimmer.” It’s a medium-dark purple with warmer undertones paired with gold and copper shimmer. The shimmery bits sit on top of the powder and brush away very easily, so while it looks complex, it loses most of that complexity as soon as you blend it out. It lasted for seven hours on me before fading. MAC Trusted Instinct #3 (LE, ) is less shimmery, darker, more muted. Maybelline Sparkling Wine (, $3.75) is more pigmented. Chanel Quadrille #1 (LE, ) is more shimmery. Makeup Geek Last Dance (P, $5.99) is less shimmery. NARS New York (P, $24.00) is darker, warmer. theBalm Curvy Cami (P, $16.00) is cooler. MAC After Dusk (P, $16.00) is less shimmery, darker. View dupes side-by-side.

Plummed is described as a “shimmering dark plum.” It’s a medium-dark, plummy purple with warm, brown undertones and a pearly sheen. It had good color payoff with a soft, blendable texture that was smooth and not too firm. It wore for eight hours before fading slightly. MAC Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop (LE, $21.00) is less shimmery, warmer. Buxom Wild Nights (P, $12.00) is less shimmery, darker. Zoeva Warm Notes (P, ) is less shimmery, darker. Can I just say I think it’s really funny that you previously said this wasn’t the worst Carbon you’ve seen, and it still got a straight “F”. Badly performing Carbon just feels like a quintessential part of the Mac “experience” at this point.

Kat Avatar

I have Typographic, and it’s honestly one of the best eyeshadows I’ve ever tried, formula-wise. Carbon’s just a running joke at this point, I can’t begin to understand the rationale behind continuing to release it in these palettes.

Bonnie Avatar

Kat, I really think you’re on to something here! Like…Maybe it IS a running joke for the people in charge of putting these things together. I’d bet it’s something along the lines of, “Let’s put our most-hated eyeshadow in EVERY palette and see how many we still can sell. It will be hilarious! Suckers.” 😉

Katherine T. Avatar

Oh sad ! The 2 colors I was most interested in scored terribly, Greensmoke (F) and Trax (D+). Thanks for the dupes, I’ll be studying them. And I like Chains of Love, but I already have Hello Kitty Chocolate Chip, which I love. And what is the deal with Carbon? I’m starting to think MAC has 10 million Carbons stockpiled in a warehouse somewhere, and they have to stick this horrible shade into every palette from now until the apocalypse

xamyx Avatar

Carbon has consistently stayed on the “Best Seller” list, so apparently a lot of people like it? I have more “pigmented” blacks for sure, and *nothing* will ever beat UD Black Dog, but Carbon is nice to blend into the crease, and when blended into another shadow, it’s not so bad! I wouldn’t use it alone as a lid color for a smokey eye on its own, as I have better options, but if I only had Carbon available (ie, traveling), over a black base it would work.

Nancy T Avatar

MAC is trying to Carbon-ate the globe!
As for Greensmoke, this looks NOTHING like the Pro Pan version! Quality or intensity wise. So you may want to try swatching it in store. I do wear mine, and all my eyeshadows over primer, so that definitely keeps the shimmer intact on my lid. HTH!

Katherine T. Avatar

LOL ! Yes, I remember you mentioning your single of Greensmoke is so much better. I always have to wear primer because of oily lids, so the single might work for me. I definitely have Greensmoke on my swatch list next time I’m at a MAC counter. I’ve been afraid to go, because I’ll probably see too many things I want LOL

Bibi Avatar

Hmmmm…..
I’m torn between getting this palette for my niece in India, or the M·A·C ‘Warm Neutral Times’ palette , or the M·A·C ‘Nordstrom Naturals’ Eyeshadow Palette (Limited Edition).
She does a lot of bridal make up & most of her brides ask for a ‘natural’ look.
Anyone out there have any advice?
Personally I’d prefer one of the UD palettes, but she wants MAC.

Nancy T Avatar

This palette palette would have been a “get”, except that I already have some of these shades and others that look identical. What I do NOT understand for the life of me, is what in the heck did they do to Greensmoke??? My single Pro Pan of it is absolutely gorgeous and way more pigmented than this pathetic excuse of it!

Rachel R. Avatar

What a crying shame about Greensmoke and Trax. Though even with a few duds, for the price, it’s not bad for someone who doesn’t have the other shades. I’ll be skipping though.

I’m really loving your eyeliners!

Kelsey Avatar

I would love to ask M.A.C. how these products make it onto the shelves. We all know what they’re capable of, so there’s no reason any of these shades should score below an A. Do they not care?

miekogirlie99 Avatar

as great of a value as this palette is, the colors aren’t that exciting…not something i could see myself grabbing for.

Genevieve Avatar

Hmmm – there are a few too many colours that look pretty similar in this palette. My only favourite was greensmoke and that was a big F. Chains of love looked gorgeous. Way too many mattes for me,
Your eye looks are sensational Christine – really lovely.

Pearl Avatar

Well shoot – I think I’m going to pass on this one. I really thought I’d buy this one but I can’t justify the price for just the 4 shades I “need” from it. I get in this mind set of “I don’t have that one yet so I have to get it”, like the MAC eyeshadow police are going to show up and arrest me for not having every single shade. The 4 that I was ‘needing’ from this palette, I have dupes for but if I hadn’t checked here first, I would have just gone ahead and bought it. Once again, thank you Christine!

Mel Avatar

I think I should quit expecting MAC to improve their eyeshadows’ formula! The same old flaws as always. Disappointed. Make Up For Ever, take all my money!

Rhonda Avatar

HELP! I’d like to get one of these 15-pan palettes–either the Nordstrom Warm Neutrals or the Finest Eyeshadow Palette. Any input would be appreciated!

Silvia Avatar

I seldom comment here (sorry Christine!), but I cannot help saying that the second look you created is gorgeous! It reminds me of how inspiring make-up can be 🙂
