MAC Fall Colour: Lightscapade Mineralize Skinfinish

MAC Lightscapade Mineralize Skinfinish ($28.00 for 0.35 oz.*) is described as a “soft candlelit beige with multi-dimensional shimmer.” It is limited edition, but it did previously launch. It is part of the MAC Fall Colour Collection, which debuts in North America on September 29th, 2011 and will roll out internationally in October. Mineralize Skinfinishes are more akin to highlighters than anything else, but depending on the shade of the product and your skin tone, it may be used as a bronzer, blush, or highlighter. Lightscapade is definitely in the highlighter camp, as it is virtually colorless.

On me, it’s a pale beige-tinted white with mostly warm champagne shimmer. There is an underlying warmth, but it’s not truly golden, so it should be wearable on cooler and warmer complexions. Worn alone, it does lighten where I put it, so I would personally wear it in conjunction with a blush, so it doesn’t wash me out or give me corpse-esque cheeks. You can lightly dust it with a stippling brush (like the 188) for a very soft, more shimmer than powder, look as well. The texture is soft and the powder feels finely-milled. The shimmer particles aren’t too large, so it shouldn’t emphasize pores or skin imperfections.

This is likely the most anticipated item of the collection, so I do expect it to sell quickly (and probably sell out). It’s a nice highlighter, and if you like the general texture and feel of mineralize skinfinishes, you’ll like this one, too. It definitely has that softer feel with less powderiness and chunky glitter than some other shades are known for. I don’t find that the mineralize blushes or skinfinishes wear all day; I usually notice some fading around six hours (and I have normal-to-dry skin).

Lightscapade is similar in overall lightness to MAC Truth & Light and MAC Too Chic, but both of those shades are a touch more golden.

* I have a sample of Lightscapade with sample labeling, which means it does not have size information on it as saleable version would have. The mineralize skinfinishes from Semi-Precious were 0.22 oz. and the overall appearance looked the same. Mineralize skinfinishes, previously, were 0.35 oz. MAC still lists the weight as 0.35 oz. on their website–until I can confirm it is less, I’m making the assumption that the special design of the Semi-Precious mineralize skinfinishes affected the weight.

Hi Christine, I am a long time reader of you site, first time poster LOL 🙂 do you think this will work on dark/ nc 50, skin tones? Or would it be a bit chalky? Thanks for your help 🙂

Oh alright then. I will definitely buy one anyway and compare it to my old Lightscapade, see how they differ (I’m sure the old one was more blue and pink and less beige/yellow/orange). Thanks.

Christine Avatar

No. It really depends on how early in the production cycle; earlier ones have actual sample packaging, while later ones have the retail labeling. If/when I get samples from MAC, it’s usually a week or less before they come out, so they are packaged like retail products.

Devi Avatar

Your makeup here gives you a soft, gorgeous look. The angel flame quad look makes your eye color pop too.

But I’ll pass on the actual product though. xD

do you think this would look too beige as a highlighter for somebody with cool-toned, somewhat pale skin (i’ve never actually been color matched, but i’d say i’m between NC 20 and 30, or is it NW.. idk, I have definite pink undertones though). I’ve been reallly looking forward to the re-release of Lightscapade, but I don’t want to get it and have it look bad, and ruin it for somebody else who could’ve used it.

i’m also wondering how glittery it is, i’ve never used an MSF before, and the more I read about them, the more glittery they sound, which I don’t have a problem with, as long as it’s pretty and doesn’t just look like there’s a bunch of fallout on my face! haha. thanks for the help and wonderful posts !

So pretty! For whatever reason, I don’t have a problem with MSFs fading on me. Where I live, it’s like summer weather all year long, so I use Revlon Colorstay products and apply MSFs on top. I also have combination skin that tends to be on the dry side. I hope I can get my hands on this and that it will make a lovely highlighter.

I’ve been waiting for the chance to try this on my white-as-a-sheet complexion. And I love your eye look in these picks! This collex is a total winner for me.

Ani_BEE Avatar

^ I’ve been feeling that way for a few years now. lol

I think I will get this because all I have is glow powders that act like on bronzer and matte highlighters.

Melody Avatar

Oh I know! Even Light Sunshine from Fashion Flower is a light blush to me. I’m still a fool for other highlighters, but I hope this one will just be glowy without adding color.

My store said they would hold one for me, with heavy blue veining. I will visit with it, and stare at it before I decide whether or not to buy.

For the past couple of years, I have been wanting this badly, based on the 2006 version swatches. I was so excited when I heard it was coming back. The couple of swatches I’ve seen so far just look so “meh” to me.

I have quite a few highlighters that I’m really happy with, so hopefully I will not regret it if I pass on this.

You’re too funny, SD! “I will visit with it, and stare at it before I decide whether or not to buy.” lol!

My dilemma is whether to order online or really put myself out to get to the store when they open that day so I can pick the veining as I want one with that has the most yellow, followed by champagne & the least orange.

Thanks for the review Christine! Very accurate. I used to wish for this when I saw reviews and praises at different websites. Then after several MAC MSF purchases and realizing how unnatural MSFs looked on me, I went to check on other brands. I soon discovered Shisheido accentuating color stick and was very pleased with it’s effect. A bit pricey than MAC but definitely worth it with it’s smooth texture, dewy effect and long long lasting power.

Meredith Avatar

I heard this was super duper coveted, and thats really the only reason I want this- although i LOVE porcelain pink and I have super light skin, so i think this will be a good highlight on my skin, pros vs. cons, I’m probably going to pick it up anyway. haha.

summerblue Avatar

I agree w/ you, Meredith; I want only because of all the hype, as, truthfully, I have so many highlighters that I need another one like hole-in-the-head! lol! I really want to check out Becca’s Pearl Shimmering Skin Perfector Highlighter in Pearl & Gold which has gotten sterling reviews.

Christine, does this compare in anyway to using Vanilla Pigment as a highlighter?

Lauren Avatar

All those people who bought this item while it was discontinued for insane amounts of money must be kicking themselves now :/

But cool! Now I can grab one for myself. Even if it’s not the most unique when applied, I still love the uniqueness of the product just in presentation alone. Swirly Colors! lol

I know some of the newer MAC mineralize products have much less bismuth oxychloride in them and more mica instead based on the order of ingredients. Bismuth oxychloride is a very heavy powder ingredient so that change would make the end product have a lighter weight. Bismuth oxychloride is also a very cheap filler ingredient and a common skin irritant for a lot of people but it does have a lovely sheen and texture.

I don’t know if MAC will have upgraded the formula for this release. My original Lightscapade is much cooler-toned than your swatch but each one is different so it doesn’t mean they’ve changed the colour.

Selenite Avatar

I had this the first time around and ended up swapping it away. While it looked stunning in the pan on my skin it didn’t really look that unique.

Stephanie Avatar

I’m kicking myself for not getting a backup when I got the original release and have just a little left I’ve been barely touching to make it last so VERY interested in getting this since it does not appear they changed anything, yay for no glitter! Might have to take a day off to wait in line or something as it will probably be gone otherwise, like most LE stuff I don’t get immediately. Love/Hate MAC for this, oh well!

Linda Avatar

I have Soft and Gentle but that was too glittery for me as a highlight, I’m tossing up between Too Chic and Lightscapade. I’m in NC25, which would you recommend for an everyday glow?

Hi, Christine,

Thank you (always) for your postings.

Would you say this is similar to Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick in Beige? The swatch looks about the same. I am planning to purchase one but since I have BB ShimmerBrick in Beige, I do not want something that overlapps.
Thanks for your help.

Laura Avatar

I rec’d mine from Mac online & mine has absolutely no veining at all.. it looks like MSFN in light but with shimmer. Not a hint of blue, yellow, or any of the other colors. I know it can vary with MSFs, but this is a bit ridiculous.

Justine Avatar

The design on it is gorgeous, reminds me of a winter wonderland, but on it doesn’t seem all that special. I love MSFs don’t get me wrong, but more for looking at and collecting than anything else. Passing on this one.

Jamie Richardson Avatar

Hi guys, I just wanted to let yall know that MAC online re-stocked both the Lightscapade AND Porcelain Pink msf’s!!!! It is about 2am central right now and it is available for purchase!! HURRY! 🙂 Oh and also, thanks Christine for such a great site!

Abbie Avatar

Hi, I have light sunshine beauty powder and nars Albatross. Do I still need this one? are these highlighters similar on faces?

Is this similar to wonder women pink power??

Thais Avatar

Christine, great review (as usual!). Question: how would you compare this MSF to the Snow Globe beauty powder from the Glitter and Ice collection? Thanks!

alexandra85 Avatar
