MAC Let’s Stay Together Versicolour Lip Stain
MAC Let’s Stay Together Versicolour Lip Stain ($24.00 for 0.28 fl. oz.) is described as a “mid-tone warm pink.” Initially, it appears as a muted, medium pink with cool undertones, and then it “sets” and leaves a richer, medium-dark fuchsia-berry color with strong, blue undertones. It had semi-opaque coverage, applied fairly evenly, and didn’t emphasize lip lines as much as other shades (just very slightly). It lasted for seven hours but was drying. Jouer Madison (P, $17.00) is more muted, warmer (90% similar). Maybelline Opalescent Orchid (515) (P, $8.99) is more shimmery (90% similar). MAC Embrace Me (LE, $21.00) is more shimmery (90% similar). Marc Jacobs Beauty Whip It (304) (P, $29.00) is more shimmery, warmer (90% similar). Sephora Ultra Violet (18) (P, $12.00) is more shimmery, brighter (90% similar). Burberry Pink Sweet Pea (LE, $29.00) is more shimmery, darker (90% similar). Dior Soho (888) (P, $35.00) is warmer (90% similar). Chanel Caractere (P, $30.00) is warmer (85% similar). MAC Girl About Town (P, $21.00) is more shimmery, darker (85% similar). MAC Vibrant Vibe (P, $22.00) is lighter (85% similar). MAC Long Distance Relationship (P, $24.00) is darker (85% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Erotic (P, $54.00) is darker, brighter (85% similar). NARS Priscilla (P, $26.00) is lighter (90% similar). Chanel Confusion (P, $30.00) is lighter, more muted (80% similar). Chanel Fragola (P, $30.00) is lighter, more muted (80% similar). MAC Long Distance Relationship Versicolour Lip Stain ($24.00 for 0.28 fl. oz.) is described as an “intense mid-tone violet.” It initially looks like a bright, magenta purple with subtle, warm undertones, but it transforms into a deep, purple-berry. It had semi-opaque coverage that went on fairly evenly. The consistency was slightly thicker than a lot of the other shades but was comfortable to wear. This shade lasted for eight hours but was somewhat drying. Urban Decay After Dark (DC, $26.00) is more pigmented (90% similar). MAC Rebel (P, $21.00) is darker (90% similar). NYX Spice Cake (P, $5.99) is lighter, more muted (85% similar). MAC Let's Stay Together (P, $24.00) is lighter (85% similar). Makeup Geek Groupie (P, $15.00) is more shimmery, brighter (85% similar). MAC Ultramarine Pink (LE, $30.00) is lighter (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.
MAC Perpetual Holiday Versicolour Lip Stain ($24.00 for 0.28 fl. oz.) is described as a “deep grape purple.” It’s a dark plum with cool, reddish undertones and looked slightly warmer applied than initially swatched, but otherwise, the colors were similar. It had semi-opaque coverage and looked a lot like a stain, but it applied somewhat unevenly and some areas appeared darker than others. On me, the color lasted for eight hours but was somewhat drying. NARS Plato's (LE, $26.00) is warmer (95% similar). Anastasia Berry (-, $16.00) is lighter (95% similar). Anastasia Black Cherry (-, $16.00) is darker, warmer (95% similar). Tarte WCW (P, $20.00) is warmer (90% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Orchid Fatale (P, $54.00) is brighter, warmer (90% similar). ColourPop Furry (LE, $10.00) is more shimmery (90% similar). Urban Decay Apocalypse (DC, $26.00) is more muted (85% similar). MAC Modern Drama (LE, $20.00) is lighter (90% similar). MAC Peer Pressure (LE, $20.00) is lighter, warmer (85% similar). MAC At Your Best You Are (LE, $21.00) is lighter, cooler (85% similar). Maybelline Obsessed (P, $7.99) is lighter, cooler (85% similar). MAC Sin (LE, $21.00) is warmer (85% similar). MAC Purple Mocha (P, $21.00) is darker, more muted (80% similar). Maybelline Caviar Couture (050) (P, $8.99) is lighter, brighter, cooler (80% similar). MAC Lasting Achievement (DC, $19.50) is more shimmery, warmer (85% similar). FORMULA OVERVIEW | MAC Versicolour Lip Stain ($24.00 for 0.28 fl. oz.) is supposed to be a hybrid gloss and stain formula with a glossy shine, long-wear (eight-hours, specifically), “jelly-like texture,” and “stay-true colour.” Interesting discovery: under “usage” (on MAC’s website) the following is there: “As with many lips stains, lips might feel slightly dry over time … Product not recommended for use on overly dry or sensitive lips.” There is some good, specific information about these, though for color payoff isn’t as clear, so based on the fact that these are a gloss/lip stain hybrid (neither of which are typically opaque), I would expect noticeable color with translucency–like stained glass. The majority are fairly pigmented and are true-to-form as a lip stain, and they have a moderate shine. The consistency is thin, watery initially and develops into a slightly thicker, lightly tacky texture as it “sets.” It is one of the least-tacky textures of this type of formula (as it is similar to ones like YSL Glossy Stains, Giorgio Armani Ecstasy Lacquer, Tom Ford Patent Finish, L’Oreal Color Caresse). Some shades emphasized and gathered into lip lines, which may be due to the slightly thinner overall consistency (compared to other like formulas). The wear ranged from six to eight hours and was lightly to moderately drying over time. The formula has a subtle vanilla scent but no discernible taste.

Oh these are pretty! The semi-opaqueness gives it a translucent, stained glass effect on the lips, nice for summer
Glad you liked ’em, Katherine!
Long Distance Relationship is quite pretty.
It is!
Let’s Stay Together and Long Distance Relationship are veeeery pretty.
They are!
I’m confused. You said this is Let’s Stay together but the pictures say preserving passion?
Sorry – just me being stupid and forgetting to change the titles!
These look really nice! I’m all about bright pink lips! Thanks for the review.
Also, do you remember what eyeliner you were wearing in the picture? It’s beautiful. ?
I think it was Sephora Good Mood!
So pretty! I don’t know that this is my favorite formula though. I like lipsticks, I like glosses, and I like sheers but not so sure I’m a big fan of balms and stains. Long Distance might win me over as a alternate to the dupes I have.
Have you tried any of the lip stains in this type of formula before?
I bought Constant Craving. The shade just didn’t transfer on me as it swatched. (I think I posted a pic with my blog review.) I had pretty much the same issues with it as you did. I think some of it may be that my lips are fairly pigmented even though my skintone is lighter than yours. I’m really on the fence about getting other shades bc there are so many good lip products out there now. I’ve had really good luck with ABH and Kat Von D lately (as well as the UD and MAC stand-bys).
I like all of them but Perpetual Holiday looks soooo good. I love dark lips and that is so awesome for a lighter take.
And it wears long!
Perpetual Holiday is my jam! Pun intended. I really love that very deep, yet translucent stained quality it gives. Long Distance Relationship is pretty, too. But I feel covered for that shade, so I am not getting that one.
Haha! 😉
I love the way these look, but the drying is a major deal breaker for me. My lips are already on the dry side, so they can’t take any products that would dry them out even more. Shame, because they look great.
Drats! It seems like the right call to stay away from them, unfortunately 🙁
Same here Lauren, :(. Too bad because I really like the effect of these sheer stains. Hm.
I love the look of these, they look lighter and less glossy than lip glosses. As Katherine said, perfect for summer! I’d love to get one but I usually don’t get on with stains, I often react to them ?.
Oh no 🙁 I’d probably stay away from these, since MAC actually mentioned they aren’t great for those with dry lips!
Perpetual Holiday is SUCH a dreamy colour!! I don’t think I’d wear it well but it looks gorgeous on you!
Thank you!
Perpetual Holiday is beautiful! I’m always glad to see a dark color perform well, especially plums and purples.
Me too 😀
They are all so pretty! Now which one to get?
That is a good question! What are you leaning towards?
Always the red ones, but I am still making up my mind. I have so much red already.
Matte lip shades are OUT! Pigmented lip ”stains” are IN! Woo…! Looking gorgeous !
That’d be a nice switch, but I keep seeing more mattes!
