MAC Keepsakes/Plum Eye Bag Review, Photos, Swatches

MAC Keepsakes/Plum Eye Bag
MAC Keepsakes/Plum Eye Bag

MAC Keepsakes/Plum Eye Bag ($39.50 for 0.62 oz.) is a cool-toned set of shades in iridescent lavender and deep plum with a cool purple eyeliner. Both of the eyeshadows are repromotes, while the eyeliner is permanent. The eyeliner was disappointing, as it was sheer and drier. It includes an Extra Dimension eyeshadow duo (0.14 oz.), In Extreme Dimension Lash Mascara (0.44 fl. oz.), and a Powerpoint Eye Pencil (0.04 oz.). Everything in the set is full-sized, and it all fits into a small, glittery, zippered bag. In May, MAC released smaller-sized Extra Dimensions eyeshadows at $19.50/0.04 oz., whereas the duo contains 0.14 oz. in total, so there is a value of $68.25 there, plus $22 for the mascara and $16 for the eyeliner, for a total value of $106.25–so it is an excellent deal if they’re products you would use. Even if you just liked the eyeshadow duo, it is almost the same as what you would have paid on two singles (and you’ll get more–I have no idea how they managed to get more product into the compact, given they’re visually the same size as the singles).

Triple Impact is described as an “opalescent pink.” It’s an iridescent, cool-toned lilac with a frosted finish. It had semi-sheer coverage applied damp, and the coverage increased to semi-opaque when applied dampened, but it isn’t the most pigmented eyeshadow. The texture was soft and blendable, though, and it wore well for seven and a half hours before fading. See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Round Midnight is described as a “rich reddish plum.” It’s a depened, plummy burgundy with subtle, warm undertones and a soft, frosted finish. It had incredibly rich, opaque color payoff both wet and dry, and it’s not what I would call buildable (which is how this formula is described)–but you may prefer it that way. Applied, I didn’t notice any fading until after eight hours of wear. See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Permaplum is described as a “deep plum with dark shimmer.” It’s a medium-dark, cool-toned violet purple with a pearly sheen. It was a drier pencil, so the coverage was semi-sheer and uneven, unfortunately. I wasn’t able to get it to be fully opaque, even after layering it a few times, as it looked uneven. The color lasted for seven and a half hours before I noticed thinning. It’s part of the permanent range. See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Pity about that liner, as the eyeshadows are really nice. I might just get this for the eyeshadows alone, and the mascara is an OK one so that is a plus. I do wish they had included a better eyeliner as drier pencils aren’t kind to the lids.
If I buy this depends on how much it’ll cost here. As I know I wan’t NARS Subra, I might skip this if I find it on the expensive side.
As s sidenote, I swatched Subra yesterday. I love it, but they were out of it, kind of annoying, but understandable.

The shadows are lovely, but am I the only one who thinks that the cooler purple of the pencil just doesn’t match? I wish they’d gone with a warmer purple or a black-brown with purple shimmer. As it is, I feel like wearing everything together here would look weird.

Wow, I love the eyeshadow duo. Beautiful colors. I’m not too about that eyeliner… I feel these eyeshadows would have suited the brown eyeliner better? I kind of want all of these bags (oh god, imagine my husbands reaction ha ha) because I’m running low on the black and brown eyeliners featured in them (so, they actually are a good value for me.) I think it’s still probably worth it to buy this just for the eyeshadows, and give the liner away but I’ll have to think about it. Thanks again for the professional reviews!

I do like that MAC is making some “value sets” with the Extra Dimension shadows for a change/at last. It’s nice to see. They should smarten up and put some of those great shadows from that last collection (can’t recall the name – the one with Sea Worship and Soul Serenade) in some of these holiday/LE sets (and make sure the quality is as good as it was in the originals!)

These two shadows and this pencil are a beautiful and interesting color combination.
I love the tone of Permaplum. Pretty annoyed because of its performance.

I love those eyeshadows! It’s too bad the purple eyeliner performed so poorly. I’ve never used a MAC mascara, so IDK if I’d like it. If the liner had been great I would probably get this. Sigh. As to the discrepancy in the shadow amounts, perhaps one of them was a mistake?

I love the eyeshadows. Maybe they are a little thicker than the singles and/or pressed more tightly to fit in more product. (Guessing)

The eyeliner is so disappointing. It’s such a pretty color.

I’ve never tried MAC mascaras. But it sounds like a good deal even with the dud liner.

ooh extra dimensions are my weakness. I really liked the smoky set but now I can’t decide between the three, I want them all 🙁 . Been waiting and hoping they would repromote Round Midnight cuz I passed on it lastime & ended up regretting it. I really like the ED duo palettes but some sets I could have done without 1.

I was considering this set before your review, and now I think I have to pick it up this week (at least I hope it’ll be in my Macy’s store). Bummer about the liner, but I do have liners already that would match the shadows well. But after your other review about the brown eye set, I have to decide which one to get… Decisions, decisions..

I actually bought this yesterday and the shadows are gorgeous. The lighter color is almost a duochrome that isn’t seen in pictures. I was also pleasantly surprised by the performance of the eyeliner. Your review was bad and my personal experience with Permaplum in the past was horrible (I recently threw one out because it was so difficult to use and non-pigmented). The one in the kit was very smooth, soft, blendable, and pigmented. I will definitely use all of the items in the kit, but I just don’t know if I’ll use the pencil with the eyeshadows. The colors just don’t really mesh well.
