MAC Extra Dimension Eyeshadows Reviews, Photos, & Swatches (Part 2) (2015)

Here are the next six, now-permanent shades of MAC Extra Dimension Eyeshadow ($20.00 for 0.04 oz.). According to MAC, it’s a formula that ranges from “sheer crystallized light” to a “highly polished metallic effect” that “lasts up to [six] hours.” Make sure to read part one for an overview of the formula.

MAC Havana Extra Dimension Eyeshadow ($20.00 for 0.04 oz.) is described as a “dirty copper brown.” It’s a dark brown with warm, yellowed undertones and a frosted, lightly metallic, finish. It had semi-opaque pigmentation dry, but the color was noticeable lighter, whereas damp application was deeper and fully opaque. It wore well for six hours dry, eight hours damp. The new version has less pigmentation dry than it used to, though it is more in line with how the formula is described now. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

MAC Legendary Lure Extra Dimension Eyeshadow ($20.00 for 0.04 oz.) is described as a “deep cerulean.” It’s a blackened green with cool undertones and a metallic sheen. Applied dry, it was semi-opaque with a warmer appearance and lasted for seven hours, while damp application yielded richer, opaque pigmentation with eight hours of wear. The newest version seemed more metallic and slightly smoother. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

MAC Lunar Extra Dimension Eyeshadow ($20.00 for 0.04 oz.) is described as a “royal blue.” It’s a brightened, medium-dark blue with a frosted finish. Applied dry, it was semi-opaque with a softer look and the dryness of the formula is a bit more apparent as it doesn’t look as smooth. Applied damp, it was much smoother and had more depth. I found it a little hard to apply dry, and it lasted for six hours, while damp application yielded eight hours of wear. It seeemed more finely-milled than the original. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

MAC Ready to Party Extra Dimension Eyeshadow ($20.00 for 0.04 oz.) is described as a “pale lilac.” It’s a pinky-white with cool undertones and a metallic sheen. It had semi-sheer coverage applied both wet and dry, with the damp application just having a more metallic, smoother sheen. It lasted for six hours dry, seven hours damp. The texture was smoother this time around, but it seemed to lose some of its iridescent sheen. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

MAC Rich Core Extra Dimension Eyeshadow ($20.00 for 0.04 oz.) is described as a “dirty aubergine.” It’s a subtly warm-toned, burgundy with a metallic sheen. It had good color payoff both wet and dry, though the damp application was smoother and more metallic. It wore well for five and a half hours dry and eight hours damp. It seemed slightly more shimmery in this version than previously. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

MAC Sea Worship Extra Dimension Eyeshadow ($20.00 for 0.04 oz.) is described as a “tarnished olive.” It’s a muted, medium-dark golden green with warm, khaki undertones and a metallic sheen. Applied dry, it was semi-opaque with less of sheen and lasted for six hours. Applied damp, it was fully opaque with a strong metallic sheen that wore well for eight hours. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

All of these are SO gorgeous, but love Sea Worship!! After so many duddy MAC shadows, I’m so glad these are getting such great scores. Wouldn’t it be awesome if they came out with a palette of these? It would be sold out in a nano second

Maybe! I do have the original 10 Makeup Geek Foiled Eyeshadows and was planning on getting some of the new ones too but I see you’ve written that these are drier and last longer. Might they be better for oily lids like mine then? Even with a good primer my eyeshadow doesn’t last through the working day which isn’t as big a pain as the fact that no matter what I do my foundation doesn’t last either but that’s another story. Would you recommend these over the Makeup Geek ones then, for me?

Christine Avatar

These are better if you’re looking for longer-wear, I think! With a primer, I imagine these will have no problem lasting a full work day for you!

The Foiled Eyeshadow formula is cool in many ways, but the longevity is an issue, especially since so many have mentioned that even over primer, it still doesn’t hold up quite all day. On the other hand, if you love the Makeup Geek formula and don’t mind that it slightly creases towards the end of the day, they are a lot cheaper and really pigmented.

These shadows (particularly this batch) remind me of Nars’ dual intensity! I tried Cassiopeia but it wasn’t very pigmented when applied dry. It looks like Ready to Party here is similar. Thanks for the swatches and review 🙂

How do these compare to the new Makeup Geek Foiled Shadows? The MG ones seem out of this world from what I’ve seen and they’re a lot cheaper. Not too impressed with these MAC ones yet, to me they are just what you should expect out of a normal shimmery eyeshadow, not too much “extra dimension” to them..

Christine Avatar

They’re both powder formulas, but Makeup Geek’s really has a different feel. The formulas aren’t the same, IMO. These have a thinner, drier texture that wears longer and is less metallic, generally, than Makeup Geek Foiled Eyeshadows. Foiled Eyeshadows have shorter-wear, have a much denser and heavier consistency, and are more pigmented dry (as intended).

Havana, Rich Core, and Legendary Lure are going to have to be some of the first I get. I remember being so bummed that I couldn’t get Legendary Lure. I pre-ordered it. but, the Mac counter somehow lost my order and I wasn’t able to track it down. Now, I can get it ..yeah! This sucks for the people who payed tons of $ on Ebay for the though! EEK! Sucks even more for those who sell them..sorry dishonest, mean people..KARMA.

Rich Core and Legendary Lure are so beautiful. I have dupes for some of theses, which is nice, and explains why I like this line so much.

When I saw that these were going to be permanent, I kinda went “Damn, how much did I pay for Havana on eBay??” But seeing this version, the LE is hands down my preference – it’s a gorgeous, quite unique, brown shadow (which is why I hunted for it) whereas this one just seems pedestrian. Plus it’s the larger size and matches my (HG) Sweet Heat 😉

Christine Avatar

I didn’t really notice much of a color change, more like a depth/pigmentation change – could just be the lighting I use now vs. when they were originally released 🙁 Sorry about that. I wish I could be a better photographer – I try, but I can’t seem to as consistent as I would like.

Fran Avatar

Such a nice collection of eye shadows! Overall a bit muted/dark for a summer collection, but these are permanent, they just happen to be coming out in the spring. Lunar and Sea Worship would both be good colors for me.
