MAC Extra Dimension Eyeshadows Reviews, Photos, & Swatches (Part 3) (2015)
MAC Extra Dimension Eyeshadow
Here are the next five, now-permanent shades of MAC Extra Dimension Eyeshadow ($20.00 for 0.04 oz.). According to MAC, it’s a formula that ranges from “sheer crystallized light” to a “highly polished metallic effect” that “lasts up to [six] hours.” Make sure to read part one for an overview of the formula. Smoky Mauve is also being added to the permanent range, but I do not have that one at this time.
MAC Silver Dawn Extra Dimension Eyeshadow ($20.00 for 0.04 oz.) is described as a “dirty grey mauve.” It’s a warm-toned, taupe brown with reddish-brown undertones and a frosted finish. It had semi-sheer, lighter color payoff when applied dry that wore well for six hours, while it was slightly darker (and cooler-toned) with full coverage applied damp and stayed on well for eight hours. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.
MAC Silver Sun Extra Dimension Eyeshadow ($20.00 for 0.04 oz.) is described as a “mid-tone dirty sea foam green.” It’s a muted, medium-dark green with warm undertones and a frosted, slightly metallic, finish. It had semi-sheer coverage that wore well for six hours dry. It had mostly opaque pigmentation when applied damp and wore well for eight hours. It seems exactly the same as the originally released version, but the swatch seemed to catch light as it appears less metallic–I double checked, though, and they are really the same. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.
MAC Stolen Moment Extra Dimension Eyeshadow ($20.00 for 0.04 oz.) is described as a “dark taupe.” It’s a dark taupe brown with warm undertones and a frosted, metallic sheen. It had good color payoff dry, though it appeared warmer, while damp application was fully opaque and richer-looking. It wore well for six hours dry, eight hours damp. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.
MAC Stylishly Merry Extra Dimension Eyeshadow ($20.00 for 0.04 oz.) is described as a “mid-tone dusty violet.” It’s a medium-dark pink with lighter violet shimmer and an overall frosted finish. It had semi-sheer pigmentation applied dry, and the color lasted for five and a half hours on me. Applied damp, it was mostly opaque and wore well for seven and a half hours. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.
MAC Sweet Heat Extra Dimension Eyeshadow ($20.00 for 0.04 oz.) is described as a “bright peach champagne.” It’s a light-medium, peachy beige with warm undertones and a metallic sheen. It had semi-opaque color payoff that stayed on well for six and a half hours when applied dry, while damp application yielded full coverage that wore well for eight hours. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

Sweet heat, Stolen moment and Silver dawn are on my list! They’re so pretty 🙂
Woohoo!
Silver Sun is my fave!!
Nice pick, Katherine!
The two versions of Silver Sun per your swatches look different to me too. I still really want it though. I thought Stylishly Merry could be one on my list that I eventually passed on, but looking at your eye look I’m like dang I gotta have that.
Hi Ginny!
As I mentioned, it’s just the lighting catching more in one photo than the other, but I compared them with my two eyes in person side-by-side and they’re the same color 🙂
Oh I see. Somehow I misunderstood what you said in the post. Awesome, thanks 🙂
No problem! 🙂
These are all looking really nice. I’m excited that they’re permanent, I absolutely hate dealing with MAC limited edition/collection items, you know how nuts it can get. I like that there’s a wide variety of colors, with warm and cool, and light and dark colors. I’ll definitely at least go swatch some in store. (Oh, and I love that first, cooler toned look you did!)
Thanks, Kat! 🙂
Will these be available in pans, or just inside pots? I’d love to fill a couple spots in my 15-pan palette with a few of these shades. Silver Dawn and Silver Sun are really up my alley for what I’m into this spring.
They are just available in pots as far as I know. They did not provide pricing for pans, and these I believe are baked or poured onto a plate vs. into a pan.
Silver Sun and Sea Worship are definitely coming home with me. Love warm greens!
Yay!
Hi Christine,
These look beautiful, and I will definitely be picking up the rose gold and the olive green. Have you heard anything about new or old Extra Dimension Skinfinishes coming out?
No, sorry, this is all the info I have!
I’m definitely going to try to get a couple of these as I missed this from the previous release. Do you think the ED face products (cheek, and or highlight) will be coming back too? Thanks for such great reviews Christine!
I haven’t heard anything, sorry!
I’m so happy to see these being added to the permanent collection! I can finally get my hands on Sweet Heat. Looks like I may need to check out Stylish Merry too. It looks beautiful!
It’s a brighter pink!
Has anyone tried to depot a MAC extra dimension eyeshadow? I hate keeping things as singles and would purchase this if I could depot it and put it in my MAC palette. Please let me know if anyone has!!!!
Sorry, I haven’t!
Hi, I’ve depotted their other singles, which look to me like the same kind of packaging. They are really easy to depot. You just pop out the piece holding the pan. Then use heat to loosen the glue: Oven, candle, lighter can be used. I use a small soldering iron. There are tutorials specifically for MAC de-potting, if you Google it.
Sorry, I just red Christine’s comment that these are baked in the pan. If there is still a metal pan involved, it can be depotted. If it’s baked right in the plastic, like some baked products are, the best you can do is pop out the part holding the pan.
I personally would never depot these, as they seem too fragile – my original Sweet Heat has come away from the pan in one piece, though it’s still completely usable. Just my two cents 🙂
And I forgot to clarify: the shadow came away without me actually attempting to depot it (I don’t even think I dropped it or did anything dramatic to it – I have no idea how it happened!!).
I have tried to depot these, and I don’t recommend it. They don’t have the normal back that a regular eyeshadow has, so there is nothing for any magnet to stick to.
so glad sweet heat is permanent! now i can stop rationing the one i got last year!
Woohoo!! 🙂
Again – another stunning list of colours. Really beautiful. I love Silver Dawn, Silver Sun and Sweet Heat. Just gorgeous and rating well!.
Silver Sun is a really cool shade!
these are beautiful! i want them all! lol
Yay!
These aren’t quite as nice as the others.
Aw!
Hey Christine, Is it possible that these can go into a Z-palette? I am thinking not. I was hoping the UD ones would too. But, it appears to me that they do not. I guess it just means better organization. I am not use dot having s many singles floating around! But these and the Urban Decay, I must have.
Urban Decay’s eyeshadow range can be, but you have to depot and loosen the metal pan from the plastic component.
These I don’t think depot as easily as they’re poured/produced on the bottom of the compact (there might be a flat pan?), but it doesn’t actually sit in its own metal pan like a regular MAC eyeshadow!
Ok..I read the comments above and I think I will just leave these as is. As far as the Urban Decay, I popped the bottom out of the the plastic ring. But,it was too tall to close the Z-palette. Is there a metal pan inside there? It makes me nervous to shatter a $20 shadow.I am still waiting on my uncle to get my cabinet done. He is a teacher and I think major projects don’t get fully worked on until summer. So, I may just include it in my drawers for singles. I used to avoid singles. But, with CoulourPop and now these,it’s unavoidable!
Yeah, so UD makes it so you can pop out the plastic insert that sits inside the larger plastic compact and put it into their Build Your Own Palette system, but within that plastic tray is actually a metal pan. They’re just like MAC eyeshadows, so you’d have to actually depot with one of the depotting methods (heat or alcohol), but they will come out. I haven’t depotted anything in YEARS but there are a bunch of YouTube tutorials on it.
Someday, I’ll depot all the MAC singles I’ve collected over the years, LOL. I used to depot religiously, but that was really early on in my blogging “career” of sorts, so I had the time and desire to do so.
Ok..got it! Thanks. I think I am in the same boat as you. I can’t barely keep up with the laundry these days. Maybe once I have a room full of singles and decide to plop down enough $ on Z palettes, i’ll go buy some wine and actually make myself do it! It does make me nervous though!
I would’ve loved to see Lorelei become permanent. It looks like it is easily duped, but I’ve purchased a few and none come close. There is something about the softness of the color combined with the metallic finish that does wonders on my lids. Hopefully, it will come back as a LE so I can get a backup.
Poor Lorelei! I was surprised not to see it in the line-up!
Thank you for getting these up so quickly! Every single one is gorgeous. Stylishly Merry is my favorite. I have Bella Rouge, but I think Stylishly Merry is enough different to warrant lemming over. Those browns are so rich, too. It looks like I have dupes Silver Dawn and Silver Sun. Cool.
Do you think you’ll get Stylishly Merry then?
I think I will, but after my wallet has recovered a bit from the Sephora sale.
Well, lucky for my wallet the only two that really excite me are ones I already own…A Natural Flirt and Sweet Heat from the Magnetic Nudes Collection. I wish they would make the Extra Dimension Skinfinishes permanent — that I could get excited about.
I was surprised not to see the blushes/skinfinishes.
I could have sworn the original release of Silver Dawn was more silver and cooler-toned. I’ll have to whip out the ED shade I have at home to see if I’m confusing the names. It definitely wears more grey-taupe on my NW10 skin, anyhow.
There’s definitely a slight gray tint to it, though on me it comes out more if I use it damp! I do think this one might pull cooler/warmer based on your skin tone or what you pair it with, too!
Oh gosh – my wish list has just grown considerably. I thought I’d only want 1 or 2 of the shades that I’d missed from Alluring Aquatics but now I’ve added Silver Sun, Silver Dawn and Stolen Moment to the list. Thank goodness these are permanent!
Those are all shades I could see you loving, Mariella!
I love that these are so consistently GOOD! 😀 Beautiful shades.
Yay!
I’m glad that these are performing well. The shades in this set lean a bit warm and red for me, but I like the look of Silver Sun applied damp — it would be a good outer corner shade for me.
It would work great on the outer corner!
Stylishly Merry will be mine!
Thanks for re-reviewing these. You did lovely and inspiering looks with them. Good job, as usual.
Thank you, Helene! 🙂
Some of these look really lovely. Like others, I’m glad that they are permanent and I can take my time deciding which ones I want. 🙂
Christine, please don’t take my comment as being negative towards you because my intentions are in no way negative. I apologize in advance if this comes across the wrong way. As always, your swatches & photos are amazing – along with your review, which I’m sure we all appreciate – but your poor eyes are so red & irritated from putting together all these blog posts for everyone. Even on my smaller Xperia screen it’s very obvious. As much as I and everybody else appreciates the work you put into this site, you really need to give your eyes a rest. My eyes are burning in sympathy just looking at yours 🙁
Thanks for your concern, but my eyes weren’t irritated when I was testing these!
Oh jeezuz, I’m sorry :$ I honestly thought your eyes were bothering you from applying/removing products so often. I really apologize.
I only apply about once a day for eyeshadow (in the morning) and test for the next 8-10 hours, so there’s not usually time to do it more than once!
