Devoted to Chili

MAC Devoted to Chili Powder Kiss Lipstick ($19.00 for 0.10 oz.) is a medium-dark, coppery red with warm undertones and a satin finish. It was richly pigmented with a smooth, moderately emollient consistency that was comfortable to apply and to wear as it was lightweight and lightly hydrating. It took about an hour for it to wear down to a flat, matte finish (or blot lightly to get there faster). This shade stayed on well for five and a half hours on me.

Formula Overview

$22.00/0.1 oz. - $220.00 Per Ounce

MAC Powder Kiss Lipstick ($19.00 for 0.10 oz.) is supposed to feel "weightless" with a "blur of effortless soft-focus color." Per the brand, the formula "provides immediate and long-term hydration" while "blur[ring] lines and smooth[ing] lips" and having "zero-shine." They have a bit of shine and slip; I wouldn't call them zero-shine so much as very smooth and more like a natural or soft matte finish. Like any finish with slight shine, they did wear down to a more, flat matte finish within an hour or so of wear. The consistency was lightweight, thin, and velvety with a bit of slip (a little like a silicone primer to me) and was comfortable to wear with a non-drying to lightly hydrating feel.

The pigmentation ranged from semi-opaque to opaque with deeper shades having more coverage. There were a few very light shades, which did not apply as evenly and had a tendency to catch on any imperfections on my lips, whereas the deeper shades went on more smoothly and looked more flattering on as they were less likely to emphasize texture. They lasted between two and a half and six hours with deeper shades, unsurprisingly, lasting longer than the ultra-light ones.

I personally found the scent of these to be noticeably different, both that it was sweeter and less vanilla-based but I also got a strong rubber scent that came through. The scent did not linger for long, so it wasn't something that I detected throughout the wear, but it had a strong, sweet taste that was present until it was gone. Other readers who have smelled the formula in person did not catch any rubber/off-putting scent (my husband thought it smelled weird, not bad per se, but couldn't be more specific), and when I went back to double check each shade, each one of mine still had that rubbery note.

Mandarin O

MAC Mandarin O Powder Kiss Lipstick ($19.00 for 0.10 oz.) is a medium-dark coral with warm undertones and a satin finish. It had medium pigmentation that applied unevenly and seemed to gravitate toward every lip line and bit of texture I had on my lips. The texture was lightweight and velvety, which made it comfortable to apply, but there was enough slip that made it difficult to apply well. It lasted for four hours, but it faded unevenly and pulled into my lip lines, though it was lightly hydrating over time.

Style Shocked

MAC Style Shocked Powder Kiss Lipstick ($19.00 for 0.10 oz.) is a rich orange with warm, red undertones and a semi-matte finish. The lipstick had nearly opaque color payoff in a single stroke, which adhered fairly evenly and didn’t seem to gather in my lip lines much (just barely). It had a smooth, velvety consistency that felt emollient going on but not to the point where it felt slippery while worn. It wore well for four and a half hours and was lightly moisturizing while worn.

With the powder kiss lipsticks I noticed how non-original they are; most of them are just very similar to MAC lipsticks in other formula.
Sometimes I think that would be nice that MAC had a set of shades, but just have them in different formulas (e.g. having one shade Chili, but one in Matte, one in Powder Kiss, one in Creamsheen, etc.). I understand that the finish would impact the final color (a matte pigmented Chilli won’t look 100% the same as a creamy subtle wash of Chili). So many lipstick names start to be confusing for me. 😆

I definitely need to check out Devoted to Chili. It has a rusty rose undertone that I love in an off-red color but have a hard time pinning down. And I’m loving the “stained” look right now.

More winners! Really liking the finish on these — they seem different enough from what I’m used to seeing that they’ve really piqued my interest.

Gotta say, I read the first one as “Devoted to Chili Powder” which made me laugh. I’d be interested in a “Devoted to Clove” color. Or “Devoted to Pink Peppercorn.” Still can’t read it the right way. 🙂
