With 98 budget-friendly lipsticks reviewed in the past year, I whittled my list of favorites to 12. Here they are!

If you’re unfamiliar with how I like to do my year-end favorites, here’s the low down: I pull from the products I reviewed in 2021, regardless of whether they were new, limited edition, or an established range I’ve only just gotten around to reviewing. These are personal favorites, so they may or may not be the highest rated products reviewed during the year (though they will tend to be better rated, naturally!). (You can check out the best of 2020 posts if you missed last year’s.)

Temptalia’s Favorite Lipsticks (Under $15) | 2021

Your Year in Review: Lipstick Edition

I thought it would be interesting to read through how readers used products throughout the year, what favorites emerged, what products fell by the wayside… so, if you want to join in, copy and paste the questions below and add your answers via a comment!

Feel free to break it down by price (under $15) if that makes sense to you since there is an over $15 post coming shortly.

  • What was your most used lipstick? Least used?
  • Will you repurchase it or will you look for something new?
  • Was lipstick a big part of your routine in 2021?

Comments that do not adhere to our comment policy may be removed. Discussion and debate are highly encouraged but we expect community members to participate respectfully. Please keep discussion on-topic, and if you have general feedback, a product review request, an off-topic question, or need technical support, please contact us!

Please help us streamline the comments' section and be more efficient: double-check the post above for more basic information like pricing, availability, and so on to make sure your question wasn't answered already. Comments alerting us to typos or small errors in the post are appreciated (!) but will typically be removed after errors are fixed (unless a response is needed).

We appreciate enthusiasm for new releases but ask readers to please hold questions regarding if/when a review will be posted as we can't commit to or guarantee product reviews. We don't want to set expectations and then disappoint readers as even products that are swatched don't always end up being reviewed due to time constraints and changes in priorities! Thank you for understanding!

It is such a shame that Sephora Australia is so, so lax on bringing out their recent additions to the lipstories range – still waiting for Auburn and Autumn Blaze to arrive. So none of your Sephora lippies are available here (along with most of what you review from them).
I wouldn’t mind trying Jack Skellington from CP or Libra from Sephora.

My favorite and most used lipstick (7 tubes) in 2021 is Revlon Blushing Mauve. Such a chameleon color on me, while mauve, it almost leans reddish, but not really. I love it. I won’t give it up. I tossed any berry, amethyst, fuschia lipsticks, suddenly I realized they were aging.

Sephora house brand is SO GOOD about lipsticks (bullet and liquid). I’ve enjoyed wearing the ones I have (and picking up a few more) this year….but man, that fragrance hits me wrong every time and is a real barrier to more frequent use. I don’t mind spending money on lipsticks and prefer more solid/nicer packaging so I think those were the only new “under $15” additions to my collection for the last few years. Well, there was a bad ass green Milani put out for Halloween this year. Love it. It’s slippery as hell though and such a pain to babysit. I feel like drugstore lipstick is always lacking somewhere: formula, scent, colors, and/or packaging.
