Velvet Dusk

Lethal Cosmetics Velvet Dusk Pressed Powder Palette ($47.00 for 0.68 oz.) just released late in November and included a mix of matte and shimmer eyeshadow. Two shades–Covet and Revolve–are supposed to be “trichromes,” or otherwise known as Multichromes and have three distinctive shifts. Covet had a subtle shift, but I just couldn’t find the shifts in Revolve.

I’ve now tested the majority of Lethal’s eyeshadow range, so I had higher hopes for the palette, but the mattes were quite powdery and some of the more unique shades were hard to build up or get to apply evenly. The formula, in general, in the palette seemed drier and more prone to emphasizing my lid/skin texture.

Limbo

Limbo is a light, golden peach with strong, warm undertones and a sparkling, metallic finish. It was intensely pigmented with a moderately dense, lightly emollient texture that had a touch of fallout from all of the sparkle during initial application but didn’t get worse as I diffused the edges. This shade lasted nicely for eight hours before fading a bit.

Formula Overview

$6.50/0.06 oz. - $108.33 Per Ounce

The formula is supposed to have "extreme pigmentation" and "effortless blendability" ... "that [will] last all day." There are two primary finishes: mattes and metallics, and the latter can also be used wet.

The matte finish has semi-opaque to opaque color coverage with moderate powderiness; it's a formula that is best used with a lighter hand. There was light fallout with some shades, though not at all, and they were blendable for the most part. Even with a light hand, there was still a bit of powderiness present--the brand did warn about using less with their formula--in the pan.

There were a few darker shades that had a tendency to sheer out when applied or did not apply as evenly, especially when layered over a lighter shade but most of the mid-tone and lighter shades were easy to apply and blend out. As a result, I found myself having better results by going dark to light rather than light to dark (which is more in line with how I typically work).

The metallic finish ranged from creamier, denser, and a bit thicker to softer, dense but still a little powdery (usually the lighter, more white-based shades). They were mostly opaque to fully opaque in a single layer, so they didn't need to be applied with a wet brush to achieve coverage or adhesion. I found that some of the more powdery, shimmery shades were more flattering on the lid when used with a fingertip or a dampened brush, though.

The matte eyeshadows tended to wear around eight hours on me before fading, while the shimmer shades lasted eight to eight and a half hours on me.

Covet

Covet is a medium, reddish-copper with pink and gold sparkle throughout a more frosted finish. It’s supposed to be a “trichrome,” but it had a very weak shift overall–I could sort of see it getting pinker and more gold at the ends of the spectrum, but that was in person with some contortion… not on the actual eye.

The texture was denser but a little drier, so there was also some fallout as I blended it out as the product did not adhere evenly to my lid. I’d recommend using it with a dampened brush for smoother application and more intense shine (which brought out the shift a little bit more). It stayed on decently for eight hours before fading visibly.

Deceit

Deceit is a deep, but muted, purple with strong, cool undertones and a matte finish. It had medium pigmentation that was somewhat buildable, but the texture was incredibly powdery, somewhat dry, and on the thinner side. There was so much fallout, which made it hard to use as it would drop onto my lid, under my eye, and then it very readily blended out and lost its intensity.

In order to get it to “stay” at more opaque results, I had to apply it using a pencil brush and then barely blend out the edge and just accept less-blended as the best I was going to get. It did not improve much over primer, unfortunately. There were signs of fading after seven and a half hours of wear.

Hollow is a light-medium brown with moderate, warm undertones and a matte finish. The eyeshadow had semi-opaque, buildable color coverage that applied evenly to bare skin and blended out well. The texture was soft, somewhat powdery, so there was light fallout, but it was easy enough to use with a lighter hand to minimize the fallout.

Inertia

Inertia is a medium, green-leaning teal with neutral-to-warm undertones and a matte finish. The consistency was moderately powdery, thinner, and a little drier, as it seemed to bring out the texture of my skin. It had medium pigmentation that built up a bit on bare skin, but so much of the coverage blended away and resulted in fallout. I tried it over an eyeshadow primer, which was marginally more even in application but was still difficult to build up. It lasted decently for seven and a half hours before fading noticeably.

Revolve

Revolve is a medium-dark purple with subtle, warmer undertones and a chunkier, sparkly finish. The texture was drier, more loosely-pressed, and very prone to fallout. It did not adhere evenly to bare skin with a dry brush; it was slightly better adhering with a fingertip when pressed into place, but it had to be applied with a dampened brush to really go on evenly.

I noticed that the sheen seemed to fade/mute shortly after the initial application, too. It had opaque pigmentation but a lot of fallout as soon as I started to work with it, even over an eyeshadow primer. Lastly, it’s supposed to be a “trichrome” and shift between “purple-red-blue,” but I didn’t get any shift out of this at all… no matter the angle! There were signs of fading after seven and a half hours of wear.

Lithium

Lithium is a light, golden bronze with muted, warm undertones and a smooth, lightly metallic sheen. The eyeshadow was richly pigmented with a smooth, lightly creamy consistency that was a little thinner but applied evenly and blended out without difficulty. It wore well for eight hours before fading noticeably.

Cryptic

Cryptic is a brighter, light lime-green with moderate, warm undertones and warmer golden sparkle. It had nearly opaque pigmentation with a moderately dense, lightly creamy texture. It applied better to bare skin than it seemed it would when swatched (looked like fallout was going to be an issue), but it went on evenly and smoothly. It stayed on nicely for eight hours before fading a bit.

Undone

Undone is a medium purple with subtle, warmer pink undertones and a matte finish. The texture was fairly powdery, which made it a challenge to work with as it had fallout when blended, not just when initially applied (where tapping off excess can minimize a lot of it!). It had medium coverage, which was hard to build up from that, even over primer. It lasted decently for seven hours before fading noticeably.

Corrosion

Corrosion is a darker burgundy with warmer, brown tones and a matte finish. It had semi-opaque color coverage that was fairly buildable, but the texture was more powdery and had moderate fallout during application and blending (even after tapping off some excess!). There were signs of fading present after eight hours of wear.

This is pretty well in line with my overall brand experience re: Lethal Cosmetics; really nice face powders, but the eyeshadows just aren’t as nice as I’d like them to be for the price and the shipping costs. The color story is so fun and unique but I can dupe this with shadows from another line.

Even from the swatches, this palette looked a little disappointing. It’s very tricky to get those kind of colourful mattes right – it would have been better if the brand varied their finishes a little more to include some satins, semi mattes and softer shimmers.
