Kat Von D Piaf Studded Kiss Lipstick
Kat Von D Piaf Studded Kiss Lipstick ($21.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “cool chocolate with purple shimmer.” It’s a deepened red-toned brown with fine violet shimmer. The shimmer is what makes it harder to dupe. It’s a chameleon of a color as the undertone seems to shift a lot depending on the natural light; sometimes it looks cooler, sometimes it is warmer, and sometimes it appears very dark and other times more of a true brown. The texture had some slip, and it applied without tugging, though the consistency has some tackiness to it applied. It didn’t apply evenly, and it only had semi-opaque coverage. The lipstick lasted for six hours, was lightly drying, and settled into lip lines noticeably after four hours of wear. MAC Chestnut (P, $19.00) is less shimmery, warmer (90% similar). KVD Beauty Damned (P, $20.00) is less shimmery, less glossy (90% similar). MAC Antique Velvet (P, $19.00) is less shimmery, lighter (90% similar). Bite Beauty Whiskey (DC, $26.00) is less shimmery, darker, cooler (80% similar). MAC Living Legend (LE, $19.00) is less shimmery, cooler (90% similar). Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Anita (DC, $18.00) is less shimmery, brighter, glossier (85% similar). Bite Beauty Elderberry (LE, $24.00) is less shimmery, cooler (85% similar). ColourPop Embellish (DC, $6.50) is less shimmery, darker (85% similar). KVD Beauty Piaf (P, $19.00) is lighter, cooler (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.
Kat Von D Nayeon Studded Kiss Lipstick ($21.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “pitch black with gunmetal shimmer.” It’s a dark, charcoal black with l ighter silver and gray shimmer with a neutral-to-warm undertone (the base pulls a bit brownish on me). The texture of the lipstick has a noticeable “grit” from the sparkle, though it isn’t sharp or painful to use, but you can tell the lipstick is packed full of shimmery bits. It is one of the better-applying black lipsticks I’ve tried, as it didn’t tug on the lips at all, and there was enough creaminess that it covered well without streaking. This shade was mostly opaque, lasted for six and a half hours and was just a tiny bit drying. NARS Blackheart (LE, $26.00) is warmer (90% similar). MAC Street Thing (LE, $19.00) is warmer (90% similar). KVD Beauty Nayeon (P, $19.00) is less shimmery, lighter (90% similar). MAC Hautecore (LE, $19.00) is less shimmery, darker, glossier (90% similar). NYX Cold Hearted (P, $6.00) is more shimmery, lighter (80% similar). NYX Chambord (P, $6.00) is less shimmery, darker (90% similar). Maybelline Gunmetal (P, $7.49) is more shimmery, cooler (80% similar). Maybelline Pitch Black (DC, $7.49) is less shimmery (85% similar). KVD Beauty Slayer (DC, $21.00) is less shimmery, lighter, less pigmented (85% similar). MAC Kling It On (LE, $19.00) is lighter, less pigmented (85% similar). Make Up For Ever #50 (DC, $19.00) is less shimmery, darker, glossier (85% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.
Kat Von D Plan 9 Studded Kiss Lipstick ($21.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as an “opaque, deep sea foam green.” It’s a muted, medium-dark emerald green with cool undertones and a fine emerald green pearl. It had semi-opaque color payoff with light slip so it didn’t tug on the lips. It could have applied more evenly, though, and it may be a shade where a good lip liner or lip pencil may take it the rest of the way. It does stain the lips quickly, though the color lasted for six hours on me and was neither drying nor hydrating. NYX Risque (P, $6.00) is more shimmery, lighter, cooler (90% similar). Guerlain #111 (P, $36.00) is darker (90% similar). KVD Beauty Plan 9 (P, $19.00) is more shimmery, less pigmented, lower quality (90% similar). ColourPop Bunny (LE, $7.00) is darker, warmer (80% similar). Bite Beauty Mellan's Luck (LE, $26.00) is less shimmery, warmer (85% similar). Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Cosplay (DC, $18.00) is less shimmery, brighter, more pigmented (85% similar). Urban Decay Hawkeye (DC, $18.00) is darker, glossier (90% similar). MAC Deep with Envy (LE, $19.00) is less shimmery, darker (85% similar). Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Whatever (DC, $17.00) is more shimmery, lighter, warmer (80% similar). Dior Clover Matte (400) (LE, $35.00) is lighter, cooler, lower quality (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.
FORMULA SUMMARY | Kat Von D Studded Kiss Lipstick ($21.00 for 0.10 oz.) is supposed to have “bold color” with “long-lasting wear and luxe comfort.” I reviewed several of these shades when they were first released, and a lot of them were so dry that they were stiff to the point of dragging, tugging, and were nearly painful to apply, though not all. I was completely surprised by the recent release of new shades (all permanent), as many of them were surprisingly creamy, comfortable to apply, and really felt like a major departure from a lot of the ones I had tried from the initial release. They are fairly pigmented, long-wearing, and vary from not drying to slightly drying.

Oh, Piaf … I can’t decide! The “after wear” photo looks terrible, but it’s such a unique-looking color. I suppose the more unusual colors in lipstick are worth the process of reapplication if dupes are non-existent.
And I’d just like to add that you are STUNNING in black lipstick! You so make me wish I had dark hair!
It is a tough color to replicate, so maybe for that… it would be worth the fuss, lol.
You could use a dark brown lip liner underneath!
Piaf is interesting, I can see the violet shimmer in the swatch, I’m going to have to swatch this in store to see the shift in colors and tones. It would’ve been cool if they did a purple lipstick with violet shimmer. Nayeon looks great, I think the silver shimmer makes it more interesting and wearable for a black lipstick.
I hope it’s the start of more unique shades in the range!
I’ll definitely be picking up NaYeon, but I think I’ll be skipping Piaf.
Even though it seems they improved the formula, I’m still a little wary since my tube of Poe was bad (it applied streaky, no sparkle translated into my lips, and even using primer & liner is settled into my lip lines in under 2 hours).
I would worry this would settle for you as it is more emollient/slippery compared to Poe (by a good bit)!
Nayeon is SO COOL! I’d probably rarely wear it but it’s really attracting me. It’s a pretty unique shade, with the undertones and the shimmer.
I was surprised at how dark it applied as it looked so shimmery in the tube (it ended up being a nice balance!).
Now, I’m not going to lie, I am NOT into emerald green (although teal IS cool!) or black lipstick, but if I were, Nayeon is something special. However, Piaf is so pretty for fall! It reminds me of something I was wearing last year, I would apply my MAC VG III and then a thin layer of VG Rihanna 2 lipstick on top; so pretty!
Piaf is a really interesting shade!
These are such cool shades. Piaf is probably the one I would wear the most. But, I love the other two. I think a lip liner would so be worth rocking Plan 9. I think it and Nayeon are super cool for fall! I wish I could say I know I would wear them. But, I never wore Technopagan out, lol! I can’t figure out what to do with the rest of my face look. Any suggestions?
I love a smoky eye with heavier navy blue/violet eyeliner with Tecnhopagan 🙂
Oooh..that sounds pretty! Thanks!
Piaf looks much less warm on my skin tone. I think beyond lighting, its really one of those shades that looks different on everyone. To me, its a very cool toned dark brown with intense shimmer thst makes it look a bit gray. It is a tricky formula to get even, though I was pleased that it seems to set and not migrate.
It’s a chameleon for sure! I wish it applied better, but at least it’s unique.
Nayeon looks gorgeous!! I think I just might need that in my life lol
It would be amazing on you!
I’m not a dark lipstick girl but I love Nayeon! I wish I was edgy enough to wear it.
You’re edgier than you think 😉
Love the Piaf colour and I think that Maybelline’s In Style Sienna – which I have – looks very similar and is a less expensive option. This is the kind of colour that you can either love or dislike. If you are not sure try the Maybelline one.
I need to check that out!
Application issues be damned. These will all be mine. Oh my god.
Enjoy, Mesa 🙂
These were the three I was most interested in. Dang, but they’re pretty! I’m so glad the violet shimmer actually shows up in Piaf. It sets it apart from the other browns flooding the market and is so beautiful.
It really does — the shimmer is gorgeous in Piaf.
I think NaYeon is absolutely lovely, but it’s particularly special because all the royalties from that shade are going to be donated to rescues! I’m going to pick up an extra one when I can afford to just because of that reason ☺
Oh, that is awesome to hear!
Do they really? How much of the proceeds go to rescues? (When you say royalties, I’m not sure if that means all the proceeds or ?) I plan on getting that one so that’s really cool!
I don’t know how it works exactly, as I’m just a fan. but from what I understand, all of the royalties from the individual full-size shade of NaYeon are going to no-kill rescues by Kat. so, even though the shade will be in the upcoming holiday sets (both as a mini and full-size), those proceeds wouldn’t go to the rescues since it’s in a larger set. I hope I’m making sense, but I’ve seen this confirmed multiple times by NaYeon herself, and I’m sure she could give you better details if you want to ask her on twitter (@KNaye0na)
I saw these today at Sephora , interesting colors. I’m really digging the new website layout! So easy with the dupes and makeup look right along side the review! Bravo!!
Thank you, Denise!!
Wow Nayeon is such a great and unique black!!! I want that one! The others are kinda meh. (Just because of their patchiness, I love the actual colors!) I wish companies would take the time and effort to get these unique shades RIGHT!!!!
I hear you! Piaf would be a must-have if it applied better.
Totally would have been a must-have!! If they were quite a bit cheaper, I would buy all three anyway, but as it is… Maybe just the black!
I really like Piaf! Even though I’m not a big fan of brown lipsticks or lipsticks with shimmer in general… but the name is so perfect!
The name is perfect!
I really love Nayeon, it’s awesome! I don’t even mind the sandy look of the shimmer, it reminds me of those sandy textured nail polishes. I want to love Plan 9 so much… I love cool green/teal lipsticks, but they always seem to have shimmer! I just want a matte finish.
Nayeon turned out really cool! Like a midnight sky kind of!
i’m glad these have reviewed better than the first shades of the studded kiss, it seems the formula has improved. nayeon looks like such a cool color but idk if i’m brave enough to wear it out the house, i love piaf but on my undertone it would look like i just smeared chocolate on my face lol 🙁
Awww! That might not be a bad thing ;P
I feel like Nayeon is going to be way popular with certain niche-y subcultures. It’s about 10 million times nicer than any black lipstick that was available when I was last into black lipsticks (oh, about 15 years ago….). A really grown-up, sophisticated black.
It is one of the easier black lipsticks to apply that I’ve come across!
Oh, Nayon! It looks easy to wear compared to many black lipsticks. Now I have to find out how to get it. I want it! 🙂
I hope you can find a way, Helene 🙂
Oh, man. I’ve been saving Piaf in my faves list for later purchase, but now I’m not so sure. I do love me a brown lipstick and I like shimmers, too. Maybe it’s worth it if the formula wears any better than Gothica does.
Well, it was at least more emollient, lol! Maybe a lip liner or primer?
I’m not a fan of the finish
Oh, that is too bad!
Oh Christine ;:sigh:: the first couple posts with that beautiful eye look I held firm. Willpower has left the building…..I’m off to find that pure bred quad!!! It’s absolutely stunning on you. I mean that in the literal way like I was stunned for a sec on how beautiful you looked. I can’t remember what lipstick you were wearing but anyway….onfleek!
Aww, thank you! 🙂
OMG Nayeon! Must not buy it! MUST NOT!
Resist!
I love Nayeon, I actually just got it in the mail! But, I’m wondering if it would be easier to pair a matte black lipstick with various eye looks. Thoughts?
I think it could still work with a lot of looks!
I’m sooo disappointed that Piaf has glitter in it. I tried it on and loved the color… LOVED it but she has to stop with the glitter. I’m so hurt lol… I want this color. I’m Wearing it now from Sephora and altho I’m fabulous in it.. I’m not gonna get past that gritty feeling. *tears
