Kat Von D Hansel + Gretel Shade + Light Blush Duo Review, Photos, Swatches
Kat Von D Hansel + Gretel Shade + Light Blush Duo
Kat Von D Hansel + Gretel Shade + Light Blush Duo ($25.00 for 0.317 oz.) is a new, permanent set of copper and peach. The blush formula is supposed to “stay vibrant for a full 24 hours of wear” with “silky powders” that “blend effortlessly into skin for a flawless, buildable finish.” The marketing makes it unclear what level of pigmentation these should be on Sephora, but per the brand’s Instagram, they are “highly pigmented.” As you might have guessed from the last three reviews, results were not impressive. The darker shade was sheer and difficult to blend on the skin, while the lighter shade was less firm in the pan and more powdery, so it was easier to blend but was still sheer. Neither shade made it in the realm of 24 hour wear. The two mixed together (just swirled with a brush) is better than either alone, but blending was still a pain and required an excessive amount of layers for it to show up for photos on my skin tone.
Hansel (Shade) is described as a “terracotta.” It’s a slightly muted, medium-dark reddish brown with warm undertones and a matte finish. It had semi-sheer coverage and was buildable to semi-opaque after five layers of product (the heavy swatch pictured was five layers). The texture is incredibly firm and packed into the pan, which makes getting product out of the pan difficult. The firmer texture translates into a thinner, harder-to-blend consistency on the skin, not just swatched, and it tended to look splotchy applied. The color lasted for seven and a half hours, which isn’t bad, but it is bad in the light of a 24-hour wear claim. ColourPop Overdramatic (LE, $8.00) is less shimmery (90% similar). Patrick Ta She's So LA (Crème) (PiP, ) is more shimmery, less pigmented (90% similar). Milani Bronze Burst #2 (PiP, ) is lighter, cooler (90% similar). ColourPop Meteor Rite (LE, $10.00) is less shimmery (90% similar). Sephora Passionate (23) (P, $14.00) is lighter, warmer (90% similar). Milani Coral Beams #2 (PiP, ) is darker, cooler (90% similar). MAC Cantaloupe (P, $24.00) is more shimmery, lighter (90% similar). MAC Coppertone (P, $24.00) is warmer (90% similar). Chanel Jersey (80) (P, $45.00) is lighter, warmer (95% similar). ColourPop Stryke (LE, $8.00) is more shimmery, darker, more pigmented (85% similar). NARS Gilda (P, $30.00) is cooler (85% similar). ColourPop Quarters (P, $8.00) is brighter, cooler (85% similar). MAC Bad Girl Gone Good (LE, $24.00) is brighter, warmer (85% similar). MAC Pleasure Model (LE, $31.00) is more shimmery, brighter (85% similar). Fenty Beauty Rose Latte (P, $20.00) is more shimmery, darker, glossier (85% similar). MAC Make You Mine (P, $23.50) is darker (85% similar). Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk Intense (P, $40.00) is more shimmery, cooler (85% similar). Too Faced Mademoiselle (LE, ) is lighter (85% similar). NARS Hot Tin Roof (LE, $30.00) is cooler (85% similar). NARS Liberte (LE, $30.00) is darker, more pigmented (80% similar). Top 20 dupes listed, see the rest. Gretel (Light) is described as an “apricot.” It’s a light-medium pop of peach with warm, orange tones and a matte finish. It was sheer, and it was difficult to intensify as the consistency was powdery and on the chalky side. The color blended out a lot better than the darker shade, there just wasn’t much of it that was visible on my skin tone–what you see is eight passes of product and I can almost imagine there’s a pink tone to my cheek area. It lasted for eight hours. Make Up For Ever S300 (P, $23.00) is cooler (95% similar). ColourPop Frisky Business (LE, $10.00) is darker (95% similar). Makeup Geek Bliss (P, $10.00) is warmer (95% similar). LORAC Prism (P, $23.00) is darker, more muted, cooler (90% similar). Physicians Formula Vintage Rouge (P, $12.99) is darker, more muted (90% similar). Zoeva Shy Beauty (P, $11.80) is darker, more muted (90% similar). Tarte Dainty (LE, $29.00) is darker, cooler (90% similar). NARS Buzzed (LE, $30.00) is darker (90% similar). Cover FX Soft Peach (Left) (PiP, ) is darker (90% similar). Charlotte Tilbury Smokey Eye Beauty (Cheek Swish) (LE, $40.00) is more muted (95% similar). Flower Beauty Pinched (P, $9.99) is darker, warmer, glossier (85% similar). Tarte Angelic (LE, $29.00) is darker, more muted (85% similar). Kosas Velvet Melon (Blush) (PiP, ) is more shimmery, darker, warmer (85% similar). ColourPop Tick (LE, $10.00) is more shimmery, warmer (85% similar). KVD Beauty Mickey (Shade) (DC, ) is darker (85% similar). ColourPop Double Bubble (LE, $8.00) is more shimmery, warmer (85% similar). Benefit Gold Rush (PiP, $29.00) is more muted (90% similar). MAC Sunny Surprise (LE, $22.00) is more shimmery, lighter (85% similar). Catrice I Am Nuts About You (P, $5.99) is more muted, cooler (85% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Straight F’s so far. It might win for worst products of the year for 2016
It’s certainly going to be a contender!
Quelle surprise! Another F for fail to add to the collection! It’s a pretty colour otherwise but sooo patchy!
Sadly so!
Well dang. Not one good one thus far, and with this formula I don’t expect any. KVD needs to go back to the drawing board with these. So sad. ?
So disappointed!
I’m so disappointed by the performance of the Shade and Lights! This was one of the colors I was interested in and they look so pretty. I just wish they weren’t so problematic. I wonder why these are so poor in formulation for a KVD product!
Me too, Sarah! 🙁
Such a shame to tarnish a good reputation with such sub-standard products.
I wonder if I’m fair enough that it might work. I usually don’t get along well with highly pigmented blushes.
The F score doesn’t surprise me. However, the 4,5 and EIGHT layers does! Man, these need to go back to the lab ASAP.
This one could’ve been a truly great one, like Poe & Piaf and Morticia & Gomez could’ve, too. Depressing.?
There are definitely light shades that don’t show up on me, due to my skin tone, but the majority of colors do still show up to some degree, so it’s pretty incredible how much is necessary to even reach visiblity level.
Aw, I’m like pulling for one of these to make it to a D grade at this point. Especially since you don’t include the packaging in the rating anymore. Percentage wise, though, they don’t look even close to that D threshhold.
So far, they have been pretty low across the board. The texture or pigmentation would have to come up quite a bit for one to get in D-range, I think.
WOW… they just keep getting worse. Quite a few other bloggers are raving about them. There swatches looked better. Several of the other people I follow though had the same experience. I wonder if some of the people received a different’ “run” of product.
Some love them, some hate them, but it is concerning that there is such an extreme difference in opinion!
What a shame, these looked so beautiful! 🙁
I don’t understand how companies can approve products like this for sale.
I’m surprised at how the texture really missed the mark.
Thanks for the review! I’ll be staying away from these. Aw, it was such a nice color though.
No problem, Lupe!
Dear Kat von D,
Please, please, please reformulate these. Please.
Sincerely,
Everyone
Here’s hoping!
Do they get f’s for not living up to the claims? Would they have better scores if they were being advertised as sheer but buildable? Just trying to better understand the rating 🙂
That would help, but this product has a bad texture, poor pigmentation, and poor wear time. They are not really what I would call buildable, given you can’t just use a few layers, that you have to really go at the pan of product to get enough product to loosen at all for each layer.
Thank tou for the further clarification 🙂
Damn, are all of the blush duos this bad? I really wanted the Gomez + Morticia one. But tbh I really just want it for the name ?
They have all been disappointments for me 🙁
These had so much potential! Going from A’s with the metal crush shadows to F’s now ? After the display went up for these, I was hoping they’d be better, but they were exactly like you desribed. I had to put so much pressure with my finger just to swatch out a decent amount of color on my hand! I can imagine how long it would take to build-up a decent amount on the cheeks! At least Kat+BB released that customizable foundation set that I can buy, if I can find the shade!
Wow… this one barely shows up at all. D:
That’s a shame that so far all of them are failures I was hoping at least this one would be at least average, it was my fav. All I can say is thank goodness for dupes! It’s strange how a company can put out fabulous products one month then the next they’re terrible. How hard is it to be consistent? And what happened to quality control and testing before you release it?
Hansel and Gretel totally deserve to be cooked by the witch if this is what they have to offer 😛
So bizarre. Almost every other review I’ve seen has been positive.
I have seen a pretty good mix – love it or hate it. This is true from readers as well as reviews on Sephora.
