Hourglass Icon GIRL Lip Stylo ($32.00 for 0.09 oz.) is a bold, medium-dark red with cool, pink undertones and a natural sheen. It had semi-opaque, buildable color coverage that applied evenly and smoothly. It had a creamy, thin (but not too thin!) texture that glided across the lips nicely but didn’t melt too much that it was hard to be precise. The soft sheen and creamier consistency made it appear almost like a lip stain. The color lasted for five hours, was hydrating, and very comfortable to wear.
The GIRL Lip Stylo formula is supposed to have “modern color with luxurious hydration for a lustrous finish,” while the brand founder is quoted (on Sephora) stating, “I can build as much–or as little–color as I like.” I would describe the coverage semi-opaque and buildable, which seemed to fit the brand’s description. The consistency was smooth, creamy, and lightweight, but the color still adhered well to the lips (three to five hours, depending on the shade). I definitely felt like I could apply a little here, a little there, and then spread the color out by pressing my lips together for sheerer coverage, or I could apply a single layer and get semi-opaque coverage fairly easily. The formula was incredibly comfortable to wear: lightweight, hydrating, and smoothing. Some balm-like formulas that have more coverage can sit in lip lines, but I felt like these filled them and made them look softer. I didn’t notice any scent or taste.

Visionary
Hourglass Visionary GIRL Lip Stylo ($32.00 for 0.09 oz.) is a deep, coppery red with warm undertones and a soft sheen. It had medium, buildable coverage–up to nearly opaque coverage–paired with a creamy, glide-on texture that was thin, lightweight, and comfortable to wear. The color went on evenly, an I didn’t have issues with the color lingering in my lip lines over time. This shade wore nicely for five hours and left a subtle, reddish stain behind.

Protector
Hourglass Protector GIRL Lip Stylo ($32.00 for 0.09 oz.) is a medium-dark berry with hints of magenta and a natural sheen. The finish was glossy enough to make my lips appear smoother but didn’t actually feel slippery or slide around while worn. The consistency was lightly creamy, adhered well to the lips without being clingy, and applied evenly. It had semi-opaque, buildable coverage that lasted for five hours, left a stain behind, and was hydrating.

Christine, how well do the caps/lids stay on these? I find that many pencil type products -well, the lids aren’t very secure so carrying them in a purse is a prescription for mess and wreckage. Icon and especially Visionary (it’s a dupe of Nars Shirley so that’s enough for me) are two I really want to get.
The packaging is actually some of the best I’ve come across for this type – they have a soft click when the cap goes on. I haven’t carried any in my purse, so I’m not sure from personal experience, but they seem more secure to me than average.
Visionary is a great warm shade. It’s going right on my list to check out in store. Great that this formula reviews so well! I was hoping it would.
I like it – and it’s a nice change of pace from other lip launches!
Even though I rarely wear a shade like that I really like the look of Protector.
It’s pretty!
Protector seems right up my alley!
Yay! 🙂
I’m glad to see something new and really good from Hourglass. I was worried that they’d become rather one note with everything being ambient lighting something.
Me too!! I feel like it’s been awhile since they’ve launched more color products that aren’t Ambient ______.
So glad these are reviewing well! I think they’re a nice change of pace from the overwhelming uber-matte look as the trends transition towards glossy or matte lips instead of matte being the most front-and-center. And I have to admit, I like the names. Generally “feel-good consumerism” doesn’t make me feel good. But these names are nice and empowering without pandering too much. Definitely going to pick some up.
I totally agree, Celia! It also seems very in line with the Hourglass brand to me, so I like how it just fits with their ethos, has a positive vibe, and is doing well so far.
I am enthralled with Protector!!! ❤?❤
This is definitely one I really would love to rock out with! I guess I’m a little bit purple concentric for this winter into spring. And beyond. ?
Would look great on you! 🙂
All 3 colors are stunning, love the pigment and finish! And leaves stain behind too?? Wow. I wasn’t planning on getting these, thought they were going to be more like the Clinique Chubby Sticks, but this is definitely better. I have enough reds, so maybe Protector . Christine, does this come with a built in sharpener?
They just twist-up!
I’ve been eagerly waiting for these reviews to come out – I’ve been curious to see how the quality and packaging of these compare 😉 I can’t wait to see the nudes!
The packaging feels more luxe than the usual lip crayon!
I have a dupe for Protector thankfully, but not for Visionary. I really like the way these look on the lips.
The finish is great – very flattering!
Can’t wait to see the lighter colors
Soon!
I’m living for the message behind these!! I think makeup can be very empowering for women, but it also can be very … damaging to some. You know what I mean? (I’m still on pain killers from my surgery so if I’m not making sense ignore me Christine LOL)
So I love the, loving, supportive message behind these!!
Im on a low buy for lip products, but I DID just throw out/sell/swap Twenty lipsticks…so maybe I can get one of these to support!! 😛
At least these are permanent, so plenty of time to ponder and get one later 🙂
Everything about these is utterly gorgeous: The colors, the finish, the opacity, and the packaging. I’m dying. I don’t even usually like lip chubbies that much.
I totally agree, Rachel! The finish is so flattering, even when my lips are dry!
These are my feelings exactly. Why oh why do I only have one set of lips?! ?
The Visionary shade is beautiful, but I would also wonder how it would survive the handbag test. Lovely colour on you.
Thank you, Genevieve!
Oh no! I was hoping these would get a bad review so I wouldnt be so tempted to buy them! Personally Im over the uncomfortably dry matte liquid lips and these sounded too good to be true. Guess it’s time to save some pennies. Ok a lot of pennies.
Hopefully you can try one sometime in store and see how you like it! They are a nice option if you like medium to full coverage, lightly glossy lip color 🙂
The packaging is really beautiful, I think it’s more luxurious than the new similar lip crayons by Chanel!
The packaging definitely looks and feels more custom and luxe than Chanel’s, though Chanel’s lip crayon packaging is definitely a step-up from your typical lip crayon!
They look great on you! I think I’m going to like these. Lately I’ve been using a stain with a balm or gloss on top. These would make it only one step 🙂
Thank you, Valerie!
Love those, they look a dream to apply and wear! Glad they’re permanent so I can save up to buy one! Oh, btw the adverts on here cause a pop up “You have won a phone’ ad for me that won’t go away until I delete my Internet data and cache. I’ve only had that issue once before with another beauty blog, hope you can sort it, thanks xx
Thank goodness they’re permanent!
If you can take a screen shot, that would help. I haven’t had any issues with pop-ups on Temptalia!
I was going to pass on these, but your description “The soft sheen and creamier consistency made it appear almost like a lip stain” has me thinking twice. They sound exactly like the type of lip products I gravitate towards, Visionary looks like a color that would be unique to my collection. I’ll wait till they come in to our local Space NK here in the UK.
They are really pretty on – hope you can try one in store sometime!
Both shades are beautiful, but I love Protector. This formula also sounds fantastic!
The formula is lovely!
Bite duped on 1 & 3, but Shirley is my fave of the visionary dupes. This is a great collection, though. Nice to know there’s a Nars red that I have yet to jump on….. S.T. It’s a good idea NOT to start on a new formula, wallet-wise. From the ‘if the formula fits, buy it in every color you like’ p.o.v. I know my weaknesses!
Haha! I know what you mean, KJH. When a formula is excellent, I want more shades!
I’m so glad that these are performing well! This is the kind of formula — semi-opaque and moisturizing, in bright, saturated colors — that I love to wear in the summer. Icon looks a little different than MUFE 401 Raspberry Red (which looks fabulous on me, BTW), that I think I can justify it. And I have a mini of MAC Rebel that I love, but I’m reasonably sure I’d reach for Protector when I want a more moisturizing formula and glossier finish. Visionary may be deep enough to work on me, but I’d like to try it first to be sure.
I hope you can try it sometime! 🙂
You’re really making it hard to resist buying these! Every shade is gorgeous!
They are pretty!
When I was trying to decide on some of these to purchase at Sephora.com when they were just released there were so many pretty colors I couldn’t narrow down the ones I wanted so I decided to wait until they have them at my local Sephora.Protector looks great on you!!Its a beautiful shade.
They have some overlap in terms of “color” but the undertones will be different, so I bet it is hard to choose online!
