Brun Baroque

Givenchy Brun Baroque Le Rouge Mat ($37.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a dark brown with subtle, warm red undertones and a semi-matte finish. It had semi-opaque pigmentation that did not apply as evenly as expected, and the product seemed to clump in places where my lips weren’t perfectly smooth (despite exfoliating prior to applying the lipstick). The consistency felt smooth, velvety, and thin without being clingy, so it was comfortable to apply and to wear. It lasted for four and a half hours and was lightly moisturizing, but it did pull into my lip lines over time.

Formula Overview

$37.00/0.12 oz. - $308.33 Per Ounce

Givenchy released a new, matte finish of their Le Rouge lipstick range. It's supposed to have "an ultra-velvety intensely matte" finish where "one stroke is all it takes to saturate lips in plush, opulence color that lasts and lasts." While I've been a fan of the original Le Rouge formula since it launched, I found the Le Rouge Mats to be rather disappointing. The pigmentation varied but was rarely opaque--certainly not one-stroke "maximum coverage"--and the lipstick itself seemed to gravitate toward my lip lines and any imperfections on my lips. I always make sure to exfoliate my lips prior to doing a round of lip swatches about an hour ahead of time (to give them time to soak up some lip balm and calm down, in case they reddened at all!), and this formula tended to emphasize.

The texture was velvety and had a lot of slip without feeling wet--it felt packed with silicones like a face primer--so they were comfortable to apply, thin without being clingy, but they lasted between four and five hours on me with minimal staining with the deeper shades. The formula was lightly hydrating on me overall. They did have a floral scent but no discernible taste.

Neo Nude

Givenchy Neo Nude Le Rouge Mat ($37.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a medium plum with subtle, cool undertones and a semi-matte finish. It had nearly opaque pigmentation that applied evenly and smoothly across my lips without catching on imperfections. This was one of the better shades in the formula. The texture was lightly creamy, velvety, and smooth without being heavy or overly wet. The color pulled into my deeper lip lines just slightly, but it didn’t worsen over the five hours it lasted for. The formula felt lightly hydrating over time.

I really wish I had gotten Neo Nude instead of Nude Androgyne. Nude Androgyne is much more brown and pulls slightly orange. Not super flattering on me, but that’s what happens when you buy online, sight-unseen. It also has semi-opaque to mostly opaque color which isn’t streaky or patchy. Since it’s a bad color match I can’t comment on wear time, but it was comfortable for the few minutes I wore it.

DEFINITELY returning and buying Neo Nude instead. It’s such a flattering mauve-plum and I bet it would look wonderful as a cream blush!

BB=C+=37. L=A+=38 …..? No brainer. For a buck more, it’s Pat. Only one dupe in this list, though I think Leatherette garnered more, dupe-wise. Coffee Addiction is less red, more brown on me, iirc. Somewhat disappointing, though, bec it’s a let down when HEs behave badly.
