Giorgio Armani Matte Eye Tints
Giorgio Armani Matte Eye Tint ($39.00 for 0.22 fl. oz.) is a new finish within the Eye Tint family, which is a liquid eyeshadow formula that feels and performs like a cream but dries down to a powder-like eyeshadow within 10-15 seconds. The previously released shades in the Eye Tint formula have all had some shimmer (from pearl to glitter), and on the whole, I have quite liked them as they are fairly pigmented, long-wearing, and most are easy to use. I found the texture of the Matte shades to be similar to past shades, but I personally felt like the application was more challenging, especially with shades deeper than my natural skin tone. I can, however, see these working well as a good all-over shade and can even work as a flesh-toned base (if one of the six shades suits yours). I liked using flat, synthetic brushes over fingertips for anything that used more than one at a time, and I found the brush to apply the colors more evenly overall. What I like about the Eye Tint formula–that was present in the Matte shades–is that you can still diffuse the edges somewhat while it is dry, as it is more powder-like with better hold than a traditional powder product.
Giorgio Armani Taupe Smoke (19) Matte Eye Tint ($39.00 for 0.22 fl. oz.) is a dirty, olive-brown with warm undertones and a matte finish. The consistency was more watery, though it didn’t take too long to dry down, so the resulting payoff was semi-sheer. It is somewhat buildable, but it is hard to keep the color even on the skin. It wore well for fourteen hours on me (out of the 16 the brand markets it as wearing for). MAC Princess of Soul (LE, $17.00) is cooler (95% similar). KVD Beauty Oak (LE, ) is darker (95% similar). LORAC Vintage (LE, $19.00) is lighter (95% similar). Natasha Denona Shea (LE, ) is darker (90% similar). Viseart Petit Pro #4 (LE, ) is darker, cooler (90% similar). Giorgio Armani Leather Smoke (20) Matte Eye Tint ($39.00 for 0.22 fl. oz.) is a very deep, dark brown with subtle, warm, reddish undertones and a mostly matte finish. The texture wasn’t too watery or too thin, so it was easier to get nearly full opacity out of the color. It wasn’t as foolproof as the shimmery Eye Tints, as the color tended to apply unevenly more often than not. I was able to wear this for a good fourteen hours before it started to crease faintly. Too Faced Triple Fudge (PiP, $16.00) is darker, warmer (95% similar). bareMinerals Boardroom (LE, ) is darker (95% similar). Anastasia Rich Brown (P, $12.00) is cooler (95% similar). Makeup Atelier Honey Brown #5 (P, ) is cooler (95% similar). Smashbox Java (P, ) is darker, cooler (95% similar). LORAC Espresso (PiP, $19.00) is cooler (95% similar). Giorgio Armani Fur Smoke (21) Matte Eye Tint ($39.00 for 0.22 fl. oz.) is a dark brown with warm undertones and a mostly matte finish. This one seemed to have the tiniest bit of satin shimmer to it, and I think that addition made it easier to work with and apply to the skin without it becoming uneven or patchy as it dried down. It had a thin consistency, but it didn’t sheer out too easily when applied. On me, it wore well for fourteen hours. Laura Mercier Ganache (LE, $23.00) is darker (95% similar). Anastasia Fudge (DC, $12.00) is warmer (90% similar). KVD Beauty Wolf (PiP, ) is more shimmery (90% similar). MAC Corduroy (P, $17.00) is cooler (90% similar). Giorgio Armani Spice Smoke (22) Matte Eye Tint ($39.00 for 0.22 fl. oz.) is a medium-dark, plummy-brown with warm undertones and a matte finish. It had semi-opaque color payoff, which wasn’t too buildable, but it could be diffused as it was drying down without it becoming patchy or uneven, so it was a little easier to work with than some of the other darker shades in the range. This shade lasted for 14 hours on me before creasing slightly. Coloured Raine Moments (DC, $6.99) is lighter (95% similar). ColourPop Top Down (LE, $4.50) is cooler (95% similar). NARS New York (DC, $25.00) is cooler (90% similar). Too Faced I Can't Even (LE, $16.00) is cooler (95% similar). ColourPop Party Like (LE, $4.50) is cooler (95% similar). Giorgio Armani Camel Smoke (23) Matte Eye Tint ($39.00 for 0.22 fl. oz.) is a medium brown with warm, caramel undertones and a matte finish. This was the easiest shade to use, as it was the most opaque and least thin, so it spread better without sheering out and didn’t get patchy. On me, the color lasted for 14 hours before I noticed some creasing occurring. Lancome Voyage (PiP, $19.00) is darker (90% similar). Inglot #337 (P, $6.00) is warmer (90% similar). Giorgio Armani Nude Smoke (24) Matte Eye Tint ($39.00 for 0.22 fl. oz.) is a medium-dark beige with warm undertones and a matte finish. It had mostly opaque color coverage that wasn’t too watery in its liquid form, and it dries down fast enough that it didn’t settle into lines while there is still time to blend. On me, the color wore well for fourteen hours before creasing. bareMinerals Come True (LE, ) is darker (95% similar). Urban Decay Commando (PiP, $19.00) is cooler (95% similar). Tarte Myth (PiP, ) is lighter (95% similar). NABLA Cosmetics Narciso (P, $8.00) is warmer (90% similar). Sydney Grace Dusty Trails (Light) (PiP, $5.25) is darker, warmer (90% similar). Hmmm, these look nice. HOWEVER, I’m not a big fan of these kinds of eye shadows as I don’t find them as easy to work with versus a palette and a brush. I also think $39 for one is ridic but they look great on your skin!!
I agree, Mo – the price point is very high for a single shade – I would rather they gave you less and charged maybe $28 or $32! (It is Giorgio Armani, so even sub-$30 would be low!)
I always guess the prices before I read your reviews. I guessed they’d be $32 and was a bit shocked to see the $39 price tag.
I like your eye look but I don’t think this is my kind of formula.
Totally understand!
Which synthetic brush do you like? Do you use the same brush to apply and blend out?
I like MAC’s 242 and 249 for flat synthetic brushes and Makeup Geek’s domed crease brush for crease-work with a cream product. I have a few dozen synthetic brushes that I rotate through, depending on what’s clean at the moment, so I don’t remember the particular brushes I used here.
These look like a safe pass for me.
Your wallet is safe!
I’m still questioning the decision to put out only warm browns for this release. I love the shimmer ones and use them quite a bit, but these just look so…blah.
I think they could have done one or two more colored ones (though one is at least more like a plum-brown, I guess).
You did a good job with applying the eyeshadows, Christine. I was wondering how they would look once dried down.
Thank you, TammyLynne!
Such a beautiful, rosy-toned eye look that you somehow got out of these, definitely a fave shade combo that I enjoy doing on myself!
That said, I will not be buying any of these GA matte eye tints, because this type of liquid-to-dry formula just never works on me due to tearing eyes that seems to breakdown these type of formulas in a really irreparable mess.
I totally understand! I’m still not sold on liquid eyeshadow – the shimmery Eye Tints I like and often wear by choice, but creams/powders are easier.
I was intrigued by these and the look you created is beautiful, but that would be $160 of product! For that amount, you could get several nice palettes, even from the highest-end brands. I’m not convinced these have enough complexity to do it for me alone, either, though I might check out Taupe Smoke … just to be sure!
I think if someone used the shade all the time, it might be worth it, but they are pricey as individual shades.
I often wear GArmani Eye Tint – the original. These just aren’t me at all.
Gotcha! 🙂
I read your site daily and very rarely comment but wow! Your eyes look freaking FANTASTIC in those! If you’re not a huge fan of the product (I haven’t finished reading), please try to recreate the colors and finishes with something you do love. Wow, just wow. I’m envious.
Thanks, Dianne!
I cannot see myself making good use of this formula esp. at this pricey snack bracket. I was a fan of the shimmery iteration of these shadows when I was a more of a one and done kinda gal, but now I’ve upped my eye look game, I prefer powder and palettes. These look like they would be tricky for placement and blending, if using more than one, but you’ve certainly done an admirable job here, Christine.
Yes, these weren’t the easiest product to apply – particularly attempting to use more than one shade. I think two shades would be easy enough if one has enough lid space, but it was a challenge for sure.
For the price you would expect a little bit more from the formula. I’m not the biggest fan of these cream-based formulas especially when they claim to be waterproof – they tend to feel like glue on the eyelids!
These are comfy on the lids, at least 🙂
These look really lovely, but if they dry down to a powder like substance then you may as well use a powder eyeshadow….all of these colours are very dupable in lots of our Naked, Vice, Lorac, Tarte, Too Faced etc palettes. Besides, for the price, you would want an A+.
I think the advantage (in theory, at least, though these do wear well for me) is that they adhere and wear longer than regular powder eyeshadow!
I have like 5 of the shimmery GA Eye Tints, and they are great for oily lids, but they are quite sparkly, so I was praying for some matte ones. And Nude Smoke looks like it might work. I would prefer a more neutral undertone, rather than peachy beige, but that might actually help cancel out dark circles or discoloration around the lid area, and it will work as a base for any color shadow, whether it be purple, blue, green etc. All of the other colors look too dark, muddy, or red to me. So Nude Smoke is on my buy list !
Let me know how Nude Smoke works for you once you try it, Katherine!
What eyeliner did u use?

I was curious to see how the formula would translate into a matte finish, but not really surprised to see they’re not quite as good. Cream/liquid matte shadows are hard to do well. Shimmer is a lot more forgiving to slight unevenness or imperfect blending.
Liquid seems hard to do, period, and then matte? I’m not totally surprised but kind of thought GA would nail it.
Not sure I see the advantage of this application method.
I think if someone struggled with wear, it might be useful, since they adhere better, but I think a good primer is probably a better way to go!
I am a fan of the Armani Eye Tints, but I have to agree that they do look kind of *blah*. I mean, kudos to you, Christine, because the eye look you did with these is pretty great, but I just feel like I have a plethora of matte browns in my stash already. Nude Smoke could possibly work on me as a shadow base, though. I’ll probably check it out at the counter.
They are sooo dupable in powder form, and powders are infinitely easier to use!
I swatched these at Nordstrom a few weeks ago as I was really waiting for them to be released. Unfortunately I wasn’t very impressed as to me they looked muddy. “Camel” looks interesting and I may purchase for a matte crease look, but Armani’s shimmery eye tint predecessors are much better in my opinion. I have Green Iron, Gold Ashes and No 7 (the violet color) and they are the bomb! Love them! They are the most beautiful Eyeshadows I own. These mattes, I don’t know yet. If they wear as well as the shimmery tints, that is a plus, as the ones I own stay all day and look great for 8+ hours. So happy to see your review! Thank you!
Let me know if you give Camel a whirl, Maribeth! I don’t doubt that reviews for these will be slimmer, givne the price point!
I do think the shimmers are more forgiving as well.
These are actually much nicer than I had anticipated. Spice is especially pretty, but I’m not sure I would use it.
I think my expectations were higher since the shimmery Eye Tints were so good, lol!
My wallet is safe as none of these are in a colour tempting me. I do like the shimmery ones I have, though.
Lovely eye look you managed to do as they sounded quite tricky to use.
Thank you, Helene! They were not so fun to use, haha.
