BUXOM Room Service Eyeshadow ($12.00 for 0.05 oz.) is described as an “iridescent mint.” It’s a brightened, light-medium aqua green with a warm, golden sheen that gives it a more metallic finish overall. It had good pigmentation with a soft, blendable texture that ran a smidgen dry in the pan but didn’t appear that way on the lid. The color started to fade after eight hours of wear on me. Lancome Fashion Forward (P, $19.00) is less shimmery, cooler (95% similar). Sydney Grace Green Mist (P, $6.25) is less shimmery (95% similar). BUXOM No Faux Eyeshadow ($12.00 for 0.05 oz.) is described as an “iridescent snakeskin.” It’s a brightened, medium-dark reddish brown with green-teal shimmer, so it has a multi-faceted appearance and flashes cooler, greener and then warmer and redder. I felt like the duochrome effect was particularly noticeable with this one, even on the lid, without having to contort yourself into weird positions. The texture was really dense and “thick,” even though it is a powder, and it applied well on the skin with smooth, even color that was easily blended out. It wore well for eight and a half hours before fading on me. Urban Decay Lounge (DC, $19.00) is less shimmery (95% similar). ColourPop Wishful Thinking (LE, $4.50) is more shimmery (95% similar). BUXOM Cool Caviar Eyeshadow ($12.00 for 0.05 oz.) is described as a “shimmering gunmetal.” It’s a dark, charcoal gray with a subtle, cool undertone and a frosted sheen. It had good pigmentation with a soft, fairly blendable and easy to use texture–but it was just a smidgen dry–that lasted for eight hours on me. Marc Jacobs Beauty The Enigma #2 (PiP, ) is less shimmery, darker (95% similar). NARS Jardin Perdu (Left) (DC, $25.00) is lighter (95% similar). BUXOM Diamond Darling Eyeshadow ($12.00 for 0.05 oz.) is described as a “shimmering frost.” It’s a brightened, light beige with subtle, warm undertones and a metallic sheen. Tarte Treasure (LE, ) is lighter (95% similar). ColourPop Rainbow (LE, $6.00) is more shimmery (95% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Soleil Neige #1 (LE, ) is more shimmery, lighter, cooler (95% similar). BUXOM Spoiled Sexy Eyeshadow ($12.00 for 0.05 oz.) is described as a “matte deep mauve.” It’s a muted, medium-dark mauve with warm, brown undertones and a matte finish. It had sheer color coverage, which was likely the result of it being incredibly powdery and prone to sheering out–so little of it stuck to bare skin. This is a shade that absolutely needs some sort of primer to help it adhere to the lid. What little of it I could see on the skin seemed to stay on all right for seven hours. Viseart Cool Matte #2 (PiP, ) is more shimmery (95% similar). LORAC Pink Mauve (PiP, $19.00) is warmer (95% similar). Make Up For Ever M546 Dark Purple Taupe (P, $17.00) is warmer (90% similar). BUXOM IT Crowd Eyeshadow ($12.00 for 0.05 oz.) is described as a “glimmering cayenne.” It’s a bold, medium-dark orange with warm undertones and a dusting of gold shimmer over a matte finish. It had rich color payoff with a soft, blendable consistency that didn’t sheer out too readily, but I noticed it was thinner and didn’t play as well with some of the denser frosts from the range. The color lasted for eight hours on me. Inglot #123R Bottom (PiP, $6.00) is less shimmery (95% similar). Inglot #123R Middle (PiP, $6.00) is lighter (95% similar). MAC Red Brick (P, $17.00) is lighter, brighter (95% similar). Sugarpill Flamepoint (P, $13.00) is less shimmery, lighter, brighter (95% similar). BUXOM Party Girl Eyeshadow ($12.00 for 0.05 oz.) is described as a “fuchsia luster.” It’s a medium-dark, fuchsia pink with cool undertones and a pearly sheen. It had decent pigmentation, but I found it really hard to blend out on the lid, and it had a tendency to stick where it applied and not wanting to diffuse. It lasted for eight hours before I saw fading, but I would use this one over a primer. Too Faced Totally Fetch (PiP, $16.00) is more shimmery, darker, more pigmented (95% similar). Urban Decay Backlash (LE, $19.00) is lighter (95% similar). Tom Ford Beauty TFX3 (LE, $36.00) is less shimmery, lighter (95% similar). Urban Decay Cake (LE, $19.00) is more shimmery (95% similar). BUXOM VIP Eyeshadow ($12.00 for 0.05 oz.) is described as a “sparkling orchid.” It’s a brightened, medium-dark purple with warm, pink undertones and a matte finish. It was incredibly powdery and dry, which yielded sheerer, uneven color coverage and made it difficult to blend as it got all over the place. It lasted for six hours before it had faded noticeably. Urban Decay Shock (LE, $19.00) is lighter (95% similar). NARS Fashion Rebel #2 (DC, $25.00) is warmer (95% similar). Bobbi Brown Ultra Violet (LE, $21.00) is lighter, warmer (90% similar). FORMULA SUMMARY | BUXOM Eyeshadow ($12.00 each or $40 for six) is a new formula that is available as a customizable palette system, where you can purchase a single shade and an individual compact for $13 or purchase a six-pan palette, plus six eyeshadows to go inside of it, for $40. Each eyeshadow is held inside a metal pan that is (presumably) glued into a plastic pan that snaps into the compact/palette. The eyeshadows are easily lifted in and out of the palette, so you can rearrange them or create a new combination if you have more than one set of six. They will fit into a Z-palette, but you’ll need to add a magnet to keep it in place. The eyeshadow formula is one that works better in action than swatched, as several of the mattes seemed on the thinner, more powdery side, but then they would blend exceptionally well while adhering to bare skin–and they wouldn’t fade any faster than the more shimmery eyeshadows. The more shimmery shades tended to outperform the matte shades with better color payoff. These eyeshadows seem to have a slightly firmer press to them (more in the style of your average MAC eyeshadow), and they feel quite different compared to bareMinerals’ Ready line, as those have a thicker, denser consistency.

Of course VIP was the shade in the first photo that made me go, “ooh!” … figures. Sometimes I wonder if there’s something about purple pigments that make purple-toned eyeshadows hard to get right. Because it seems like those are often the real duds in the bunch. Or is it just me?

Nancy T Avatar

I believe most of wonder why it’s so difficult to formulate purple ANYTHING? Be it eyeshadow, eyeliner, lipstick, lipgloss, etc. Frustrating!

Katherine T. Avatar

I like Room Service -it looks like a nice green for spring, or to add a pop of brightness to an olive smoky eye for fall/winter. I swatched some of these in store, and they are hit-or-miss. But it’s a good thing you can customize the palette and pick out the best shades, you don’t have to buy the duds, and the palette is very reasonably priced.

popscockles Avatar

I love Room Service and No Faux — I use them together a lot. Pigmentation is not the best, and even with a primer Room Service tends to crease on my oily lids. However, they are pretty colors! My favorites from the six I have (Room Service, No Faux, La-La-Lavish, Wild Nights, Glitz Factor & Champagne Buzz) are definitely La-La-Lavish and Room Service.

I love that you can customize the palette, but the pigmentation isn’t the best and some are harder to blend than others. I think for the price, I’m overall pretty satisfied and I think your reviews are in-line with how I feel about the products.

And I just loooove the eyelooks you did with these colors, Christine!

Rachel R. Avatar

It’s in adorable packaging, just like a full-sized single, just way smaller than I thought it would be for the amount of points I spent on it. 😀 😀 😀

Nancy T Avatar

WOW!!! Those are some kick-butt eye looks you did here! I can only imagine how fantastic the 2nd look would have been had VIP had the same intensity as it has in pan! I *need* Room Service and It Crowd. And Glitz Factor, too.

Codename Duchess Avatar

I own Spoiled Sexy and really like it, it’s the best kind of neutral for my coloring, but I agree that it needs primer to adhere. I’ve found that to be true for most of the matte shades I got from Buxom.
