MAC x PatrickStarrr Baby It's Gold Outside Mineralize Skinfinish Review & Swatches
Baby It's Gold Outside
MAC Baby It’s Gold Outside Mineralize Skinfinish ($42.50 for 0.70 oz.) is a light-medium, rosy brown base with flecks of gold sparkle but had more of a natural finish overall. The consistency was smooth to the touch without kicking up excess product, and it didn’t seem to stiff to work with, but it was more semi-sheer in coverage, which I was able to build up to semi-opaque coverage with three layers. It felt drier compared to most of the brand’s other Mineralize Skinfinishes in recent memory.
The powder buffed and blended nicely onto my skin without emphasizing my texture. The sparkles did not seem particularly present on my skin after I finished blending everything together, though (some may prefer that!). It wore well for eight hours on me before fading noticeably. As a note: the powder is double the size of a typical Mineralize Skinfinish, so the higher price tag makes sense, but I don’t think many were clamoring for a jumbo-sized Mineralize Skinfinish either.

The description has changed over the years--the most current description (as of 4/21/2018) is that it is a "slow-baked, velvety soft, domed face powder with a radiant finish" that can be used to highlight "the high points of the face" or blended "all over for a sheer luminous polish to the skin." The sheerness seems to be more in referenced to the finish than the coverage, as the usage now states to use the product damp for an even stronger sheen.
In general, the Mineralize Skinfinish formula tends to be more metallic to glittery with medium to opaque coverage--it really depends on the shade. The texture of the formula has been refined over the years with current editions being fairly smooth, blendable, and easy to use. The wear has varied from six to eight hours on me with newer shades and variations lasting closer to eight hours on average.

I was seriously hoping for more out of this MSF. Don’t get me wrong, I do love the way it looks on you, but I’m a bit concerned about the coverage factor on ones in the NC30 or darker range who, like me, thought this would be a great highlighting bronzer for *us*. Because, Patrick is not light or light-medium!
Mineralize Skinfinishes are often used as highlighters, so I see it working on darker skin tones to add subtle and/or all-over glow without causing ashiness.
I am so glad you said this. In MAC foundations I am an NW45 and I hate the “ashy” look some of the skin finishes have on my skin. I may try this out in the store to see if it is a fit for me.
Thanks for your hard work and dedication.
Honestly, for deeper skin tones, I’d suggest checking out Cheeky Bronze & Gold Deposit — the latter is better known for working well on darker skin tones for sure. Global Glow might work, too, but it has a more silvery sheen that might translate to ashy depending on your own undertones (but isn’t as white-based as say Lightscapade).
It looks pretty–I remember those big MSF/Blushes MAC did with one of their collections several years ago? Maybe it was Wonder Woman. Anyway, I used to love their MSFs but now there are so many blushy highlighters out there. It looks good on you Christine!
I think Wonder Woman was bigger, haha, but yes, Wonder Woman’s products were super-sized!
Yep, wonderwoman was the same size. I actually checked back when these first came out. The ww did at least give you a blush, bronzer and highlight together, which makes more sense to be than 20g of highlighter
This is beautiful also. I am afraid it is a bit too dark for me to pull off but I love the shade and it looks amazing on you.
Thank you, Deborah!
I’m often as baffled by the MSFs (the shimmer ones, not the Natural ones) as I am by MAC’s Beauty Powders. Christine, did you try applying this lightly all over your face? I mean, is that part of how the MSFs (again, the shimmer ones) are meant to be used? Or are they meant primarily as highlighters? I think I own 2 LE ones and rarely use them (not because I don’t like them but because I just forget but also because I’m never quite sure; one of them is quite pink and I use it as a blush but the other – By Candlelight, which was LE and very coveted – is more warm toned and while it’s beautiful, I’m just never quite sure how to use it.
They can be, just depends on your preference, the color of it, your application style, and your own coloring. I apply it to cheeks since it’s easiest to see and test that way (because I can visually see it and track where it moves, if it does).
It’s a beautiful shade, but I am disappointed that it didn’t rate as well as it should. The finish looked lovely too.
Me too!
This is too dark for me, however, I still want it just for the packaging. That red is beautiful.
