Best Natasha Denona Eyeshadow Palettes of All Time (Well, So Far)

Best of Natasha Denona

Eyeshadow Palettes

Remember when we first saw Natasha Denona Eyeshadow Palettes a couple of years ago?  She debuted with two mega-palettes with 28 shades at a mega-price tag of $239 a pop.  Each shade is full-sized and can be popped out of the palette, and all of the shades in the 28-pan palettes are part of her singles range.  Since then, the brand’s more popular and palatable (ha, ha, please, it gets me every time) palettes have been their 15-pan palettes, which still serve up lots of product but are a bit less of an upfront cost at $129.  The brand has also had full-sized, 5-pan palettes that are curated using all of the shades in the permanent, singles range (also found in the 28-pan palettes), which I don’t have since I had the larger palettes reviewed already (I have only reviewed the new ones).

I think the 15-pan palettes have been the most consistent of the releases, but I have a roller coaster relationship with the brand.  My initial testing of the larger 28-pan palettes was all over the map; I appreciated the soft, creaminess of her shimmer formula but found that it often creased on me more quickly than other powder eyeshadows (on average), which was the big downside of them for me–otherwise they were usually pigmented (or buildable), blendable, and easy enough to use by and large.  So if primer is your BFF or you’ve found they lasted longer, then mentally bump up my ratings for your own reference.

The actual formulations have evolved over time (I’m not certain that my 28-pan palette formulation is what is currently available), and the newer shimmers last a lot longer on me but have lost some of the creaminess of the original formulation that I know appealed to a lot of people.  I think her matte shades become more velvety with a bit more richness and substance.  I do think that the pace of which the formulations have been tweaked over time is causing inconsistency and missing the mark for some long-time fans of the brand, though.

I’ve revisited the Natasha Denona palettes I have from time to time because her color stories, finishes, and shade range manage to draw my eye quite a bit.  I really enjoy the color story and cohesiveness of the Sunset palette, though with all of the warm-toned eyeshadows on the market, it is not the brand’s most interesting color story these days.  It’s newer, but I found the Safari palette to work well (but note: I’ve seen that some have had issues with application and blending of the palette–it has had very love/hate reactions, which is concerning) and the muted, all-matte color story is a great complement to a lot of other palettes I already have.  The last palette I’ll mention that I’ve gone back to and enjoyed is the Lila palette, and the color scheme is still more nuanced and less overdone in the market.

I’d actually love to see a reinterpretation of her original 28-pan palettes into 15-pan palettes creating more cohesive color stories within the same vein, because I liked where they were going but the 28-pans are shimmer-heavy and beastly in size.  It would be nice, too, if the brand added singles of their newer shades, as the single range only includes the original 66 shades she had when the brand started out.

I have been really digging in with my purple-blue 28 pan palette this fall and it is just an amazing palette. I use and love my Aeris palette. I just got the gold palette a few days ago and can’t wait to dig in. I am very interested in Safari, Camel and Cranberry.

For all of the hype ND gets, the only palette I’ve found myself super drawn to has been the Gold Palette — and I don’t even wear gold that often! It just had some beautiful teals and duochromes to pair with the golds/bronzes that it seems like a palette I’d get a lot of mileage out of.

The Green Brown palette was one that from the description sounded right up my alley as those are my go-tos, but the performance and the shade range really let me down.

The Lila palette is my favorite palette that I own. The purples and the taupes are my jam. The Safari palette really ihas a beautiful color story but a) I love my shimmers, metallics and especially my duochromes and b) I’ve seen too many of my favorite YouTubers (lookin’ at you Mel Thompson ?) struggle with it.

The only Natasha Denona palette I own is the camel palette which I love. It’s a really nice neutral palette for my skin tone (fair warm). I’m actually wearing it today. It’s definitely not the most exciting palette, but since her pans are so big I bought something I would actually get a lot of use of. I love the color story of Lila and star as well and I would consider buying them if I was starting over.

I’ve had the problems you describe with ND. They all muddy together on my lid after a couple of hours even with a good primer that holds all my other shadows. I do have oily lids though and even my other shadows crease with primer but not until the end of a long work day. I’m bummed because so many of her palettes look so pretty!

Sunset is my favorite eyeshadow palette ever. I got it when it first came out and was wondering if there were enough differences between it and the newer version to justify purchasing the new on too? ?

The Gold palette is probably her best 15-pan to me. I have it and I really do love it, even knowing I have a lot of dupes for it, the formula is really good and makes it worth it for me. I had some issues with the pigmentation of the original Sunset palette, so I returned it. Now that they’ve redone it, I don’t have a need for it anymore.

The two holiday 5-pans last year were a bit of a disappointment but I really love the mini-Lila and it does make me want the Lila palette, but I have so many of the tones in that palette that it’s not necessary.

And as much as I go back and forth on her products, I still get drawn into them. I really want the Cranberry palette but the fact that it has a repeat shade annoys me. I really want brands to stop repeating shades palettes, especially holiday palettes. Unless it’s to offer a smaller version of a large palette, like the mini-Star palette, it makes no sense to me.

But ND is not the most reliable brand to me, so I have to wait for trusted reviews like yours bc she’s so hit or miss.

I don’t own any ND palettes as most of her colour schemes don’t really suit me or because of the price. I was most drawn to her Original palette, but the key shades I liked I had many dupes of.
The Gold palette is lovely, but again there were far too many similar shades to make it worthwhile for me.
Her formulas do seem to be up and down and the inconsistencies, for the price, are just too big a deal breaker for me.
Thank you so much for these overviews Christine, they are so, so helpful and I appreciate your efforts.

I wore the mini star palette to my wedding last Friday and loved the effect it had in person and in the photos I’ve seen so far. I don’t have much experience with eyeshadow but the texture of the shimmers were really beautiful to me and diffused the eye wrinkles I’ve usually got going on hahaha!

I kind of ended up with something smokier than I wanted at first using the two matte shades in the crease, but with the shimmers layered over it was perfect! I put the pink one on the lid, the gold one in the inner third and the blue duchrome where I made the outer corner really smokey. The all over shimmer looked very cool and reminded me of a look you would do Christine! I have to credit my sister for coming up with that one when I was freaking out about what makeup to wear ;D

I have the Purple/Blue and mini Lila palettes. I find the formula to be fantastic and have great staying power. To check for staying power, I do the same routine. I use NARS eyelid primer, a colored base, and/or NYX’s glitter primer, if I’m using a glittery shadow. With the Lila palette, first I put the primer then MUFE Aqua XL Paint in white on my lid. I put the brown and deeper purple in the crease and the duo chrome purple all over my lid. I used a brush and my finger to apply it. I finished off with some mascara. Then I went about my day. Let me tell you, it lasted for 36 hours before showing any signs of wear. And even then there wasn’t much. The only thing that really faded was my mascara. I don’t recommend doing this often but since I was only wearing eye make-up, it wasn’t so bad.

I want to get the Camel palette for the Sephora VIB sale, but since it’s permanent there’s no rush to get it. And I have similar colors like that so I don’t really need it.

I like the color story of a lot of these palettes (especially the more purple-y ones), but the price point is just too high for me to seriously consider buying any of them

Btw I really like these overview type posts, Christine 🙂

My first ND purchase was the camel palette which i love. I tend to do a lot of quick simple and neutral looks so to me it was worth the splurge and performed well. I was a little nervous as there are so many mixed reviews on her formulas with the inconsistencies between being great and being terrible.
Then the Gold palette came out and i fell hard and have been lusting after it since but had a hard time pulling the trigger due to the price tag. It’d be the most expensive palette I’ve ever bought to date. So originally I decided against it especially since I played with the Cranberry palette in store before it launched and i had a hard time with the mattes. They took a lot of building up to get the colors to resemble what they were in the pan. The dark purple color was the worst for me. So after that experience I was convinced the Gold palette wouldn’t be worth wild especially since there are so many browns in it that appear similar and I don’t really need more browns. But your review along with other’s came out and they were all great…. and I trust yours the most!
So i found it in store earlier this week, swatched it, played with it and fell in love all over again and then some. So I took the plunge with my 20% off and hope I don’t regret it!
I’ve had off work the past couple days and only wear mascara if I go places to let my skin breathe. So tomorrow will be the first day I bust it out a do a look with it *fingers crossed* although just typing that now, maybe I should have played with it while having so much time….
Any look recommendations?
