Natasha Denona Purple-Blue Eyeshadow Palette 28 Review, Photos, Swatches
Natasha Denona Purple-Blue Eyeshadow Palette
Natasha Denona Purple-Blue Eyeshadow Palette 28 ($239.00 for 2.24 oz.) has a variety of shades ranging from violet to bright silver to bronzy taupe. The majority of the eyeshadows are frosted or metallic, while a a handful are more matte. The mattes are, consistently, the losers in the palette, which seems to be due to how soft, thin, and powdery they are, so they sheer out and perform poorly without a solid base or primer for them to adhere to (they look so uneven when blended without primer). The more shimmery shades are easy to use, tend to be quite pigmented, and look good on the eye, but they’re not long-wearing as promised–between six and eight hours, I almost always had creasing. With a primer, I was able to extend wear by two hours or so, which is still less than what I average across most powder eyeshadows.
If you’re not overly concerned about wear time or feel confident that your primer/base solution will alleviate any concerns, the shimmer eyeshadows are nice otherwise. The mattes are better, but they’re still disappointing at this price point–there is significant room for improvement. I still recommend picking up a five-pan pre-made palette over splurging on one of these larger palettes, as you can get a good feel for the formula without breaking the bank. I also think that this larger palette isn’t a cohesive or comprehensive palette for travel or building out a variety of looks as it doesn’t have a lot of highlighting, transition, or blending kind of shades. The palette can absolutely be used on its own, but there is just a general lack of mattes that I feel like many will add-in other textures. I would have preferred the palette to be more versatile with removable pans and a smaller, more travel-friendly sized palette. I also think that being able to build your own five-pan palette would be ideal. The brand should consider labeling the shades on the interior of the palette or at least on the back of the palette (the exterior cardboard packaging as the shades labeled).
I have reviewed and worn all the shades in this palette over the last few weeks, so this post is serving more of a general round-up for the palette (so you can see the palette’s score, based on its contents!) while you can find individual reviews by clicking on the shades below:

Ouch. If I am spending money on any product, I expect the product to be good. If I am spending $240 on a single palette, I expect perfection.
Yeah, I hear you, Julia! I think that’s the issue of such a high price tag – no matter how much you’re getting – that it needs to be good all-around.
200% agree. I was about to leave the same comment.
While I’m really digging the color scheme, I don’t see any shades that would be unique to my collection. Considering the quality is all over the place and the high price point this is an easy pass for me.
Sounds like a good decision, Lorrin!
This palette is so disappointing to me.
Me too, Rachel!
Thanks for this – saved me a bunch. I love the colours but at this price the shadows must be great, which it seems like they’re not. There are a few gorgeous shadows, but I can live vicariously through these pictures, and that’s enough! I probably wouldn’t have bought this anyway, because I’m on a no-buy, but I would have felt deprived if not for this review. I might look into getting one of the 5-pans later this year.
No problem, Ginny(2) 🙂 I am glad you could live vicariously!
My thoughts are: Does this palette have some gorgeous colors? Yes, but $239 worth of to-die-for, must-have eyeshadows? Uh, heck NO!!! If it did, I would be inclined to make serious cuts in my current beauty spending and save up for this. But its performance and the fact that it creases so soon are deal breakers. No bueno.
That makes sense! I think people felt similarly re: MUFE’s 30-pan palette, too (which was $295) – it might be a deal vs. individual eyeshadows, but it’s a lot to put down all at once!
One huge difference, though, MUFE is great quality in comparison, making it worth it if one can thus splurge.?
I was afraid of this when everyone and their mother was all of a sudden all about these palettes on YouTube. I much prefer to touch things myself when I’m buying makeup so dropping this much on a palette sight unseen wasn’t going to happen for me. The only time I did that was for Viseart but I have friends who are makeup artists who assured me they were worth the price.
If the shimmery shades wore better, I’d like them more, but it was frustrating that even over primer, the wear wasn’t bulletproof!
Thanks so much for putting this review together, and for creating a whole bunch of looks with it!
I love all the colors in the pan, and a few of the colors on the skin. I think I’ll keep this on my wish list and invest in something else though 🙂
No problem, Melanie! 🙂
After seeing your review, I no longer have the urge to buy this palette. Thanks for saving me $240, Christine!
Sure thing, Annie!
Ditto Annie! I had the green palette in my Beautylish bag contemplating getting it. Wonder if it’s as bad as this one. Too much money anyway!! Thanks Christine!
The brand is over-hyped by bloggers and youtubers (it was the palette of 2015 in a lot of reviews out there!!) and I wouldn’t say I feel fooled by them because when I bought them and finger swatch the colours, the pigmentation had me in Ohh-Ahh state and I fell in love ..
But when it came to application, the real deal was fading on my leds throughout the day. I won’t say they suck but why pay a crazy price for something ColourPop would give you 100% better and cheaper.
Just saying!
Again, thank you for always giving an honest review weither its a high-end brand of budget friendly one.
Sorry to hear you had fading issues with these during the day, Dua! I would have taken fading over creasing, though, lol!
I love some of the looks you created! But honestly, with that kind of price point, even if it’s averaged out at something like $8 a color, it’s still too high to have so many below B quality shadows.
Thanks, Rachael! Well, the composition certainly inspired creativity, lol!
At this price point, I’m better off buying 3 Viseart palettes for $ 240, as the quality is much better and way more consistent. And with primer, I can get 12-15 hours of wear from Viseart, even on my oily lids. And if Viseart doesn’t work out, I can easily return to Sephora for full refund. It’s too bad that ND does have some more unique shades, might still gamble on a 5 pan just to try.
At least Beautylish has a good return policy for those who do venture and try the brand (in case they don’t like them!)! But I really do think the 5-pan is the way to go if you’re on the fence but pretty interested.
I am not buying into the hype on these… I think people desperately wanted them to work because of the cost and social media presence; but clearly the quality is inconsistent and money is better spend elsewhere. There are so many good shadows on the market now!
The shimmers are all easy to apply – that’s probably my favorite thing about them, followed by good pigment on bare skin, but the wear is disappointing (and the mattes are devastating).
Too many misses I’m afraid 🙁
I hear ya!
Wow! I have to say I am really glad I did not jump on the bandwagon for this! Yes! I was totally lusting both 28 shade palettes but the price point was killing me! Especially now with MAC dropping prices on their 9x & 15x palettes!
I would spend just a little over half the cost of an ND 28 palette for 33 MAC colors (e.g. 15x + (2) 9x= $129/33 = $3.90 per pan!!!) Yes the total amount is also half, 1.32 oz total. But I am okay with that. It takes me forever to hit pan on eyeshadows! Thanks for the breakdown Christine! 😀
No problem, Elise!
The mattes shadows are fabulous colours (steel blue is a standout colour wise) and could have easily had me ponying up for this palette.. but their performance unfortunately has made it easy to take a pass. I have a few shadows I would like to eventually pick up, but I’m not in any particular hurry.
I’m kind of surprised by the inclusion of mattes at all, when it is much weaker – maybe the brand should have tried for a natural matte/satin finish so they could retain a similar feel to their shimmers but with less frost?
I think if a brand is going to put out a palette with purple in the title, then they need to be good purples! The looks you put together are beautiful though.
Ha — that is true.
Its rather disappointing that the entire palette isn’t cohesive. Seems like a lot of hit and misses. I was excited to see your final round up though! I will take a pass on this. What are your thoughts on the other palette? The mattes look so chalky. I wish the formula was consistent across all the different finishes.
I have reviewed both the larger palettes, and the summary of the other larger palette will go up tomorrow.
Christine, I’m not sure if you want to or are able to answer this, but is this brand promoting itself to bloggers super heavily? This company popped up out of nowhere and suddenly vloggers I generally trust are all over these shadows in ways that I don’t feel are 100% honest. Is it a case where the shadows are meant to look good in heavy instagram swatches, at the expense of wearing well on the eyes? Was the whole product line thrown together to make it look like it wasn’t just about the eye shadows? Because even the vloggers aren’t jazzed about Natasha’s other products.
Hi Ray,
I can only speak for myself – Beautylish provided the Natasha Denona palettes to me after I requested product samples from them. I’ve worked with Beautylish for a few years now, and they’ve never directed a review, commented about how or what a review should entail. They continue to send product for consideration (typically at my request, though) without glowing reviews.
Wow some of these eyeshadows are so bad am even surprised it got a B. Plus parabens no way! Thanks so much for the review.
It’s the average rating for each category 🙂
For $239 I shouldn’t see any Fs.
I understand!
I purchased both of the 28 palettes myself and love them, although I am the kind of person who will pull shades from multiple palettes/brands for one look (don’t we all, really?) I’d say the product is best suited for someone who likes bold looks, and high shine metallic looks (the shimmers last amazing on me with a primer). That being said, they aren’t particularly great travel palettes or for “beginners”. If you’re a huge fan of MUG foiled shadows, you’ll have a little love affair with these, but definitely try a 5 pan palette first, and expect to pull mattes from elsewhere 🙂
Happy you’re enjoying your palettes, Bee! 🙂 Do you have any issues with MUG Foiled lasting on you? I think they are similar to those as well, but I also had issues with those creasing!
Some hits and lots and lots of misses. For such an expensive product, it should be all good. The mattes are just horrible. I think you can buy better elsewhere. Besides the colours are just not unique enough either.
I agree — better mattes elsewhere!
Thank you so much for doing this! Marathon testing lol! It’s so strange how some shadows can be so awesome and some so atrocious. I’d love to have some of these shadows but the whole palette is a definite pass for me, after reading your through reviews!
My pleasure, Claire! The mattes really dragged down the overall scores a bit!
I know products don’t work for everyone, but I still find it perplexing that people whose opinions I trust (e.g. you, Wayne Goss, Cora of Vintage or Tacky) have such different experiences with the same thing! Beautylish’s own swatches seem like they tried to make them look great, but often failed.
I’m sure testing methods/how we review are different! I know that whenever I rate individually, and then see how a palette does, it typically performs lower than my “feeling” on an overall level. These did tend to wear shorter on me, too, which I know hasn’t happened for everyone who has tried them.
Terrific work! Truly, your blog is an invaluable resource. Thanks for providing a critical counterpoint to the hype of so many on Youtube and Instagram.
Thank you! 🙂
There are several shades that I really like, but this palette is way to inconsistent and seems like it would be difficult/awkward to use. Not interested it this price point! But I really, really, really would like to try a build-your-own palette with my favorite shades.
A build your own would be great!
Nope….holy crap nope. I don’t see oily lids will improve wear time and not even with the NARS’ smudge-proof primer. That is a shame because the initial response was omg look at those colors to the heck is with that performance?! :/
I recently managed to get a hold of MUFE’s XL metal palette (4 of them) and I’ll invest my money on the artist shadows…while my bank account weeps. xD
Definitely need something thicker than NARS, I think!
Some winners, some losers, but not $240 worth of winners!
lol!
Love the looks Christine! Especially the blue eyed look!
Thank you, Denise!
Basically echoing what everyone else has said here- the overall quality of this palette does not justify that price.
I wish they performed better on the whole!
Thank you for the comprehensive review. You just saved me $239. Others seem to love these palettes and I was ready to purchase. I did buy a 5 pan which should arrive tomorrow….we will see. Thanks again for all your diligent work.
No problem! 🙂 How is your 5-pan?
Argh. A palette full of the types of eyeshadow colors I love, then I scroll down and see that the B- grade was boosted by most of the neutrals, and the interesting colors were all failures. At the price point, that’s unforgiveable.
LOL! That comment got so sad towards the end 🙁 I could feel your frustration.
I’ll be the odd (wo)man out and say I have both palettes and am very satisfied with my purchase. They blend like a dream. Highly pigmented that I barely have to dip my brush in to get great color payoff (these palettes are gonna last a long time). But probably the best is the long wear of these shadows. Looks exactly the same as when I first apply them. No shifting or melding of colors throughout the day (I have uber hooded eyes). And the duochrome and shimmers are fabulous when applied with a little MUFE mist and fix. I literally get compliments every day on my eyeshadow. Oh – and these shadows play very well with Makeupgeek matte shadows. I can’t say good enough things about the ND shadows. I am by no means a MUA not am I a youtuber/blogger. All I know is that I have not been disappointed
