MAC Crew Highlight Powder Review, Photos, Swatches

MAC Crew Highlight Powder

MAC Crew Highlight Powder

MAC Crew Highlight Powder ($29.00 for 0.35 oz.) is a multi-colored highlighting powder that has three primary shades: soft peach-orange with an almost matte finish, subtly yellow-toned light-medium pink with a satin-like finish, and a cool-toned pink-lilac with a satin finish. There’s also creamy beige hue, but this is an overlay of color and does not go all the way through. I made two gouges in the product to see how the colors went through, and it seemed like each main color is really what’s underneath a 1-2mm layer of the creamy beige. The composition of this reminded me of Benefit Sugarbomb and Benefit Hervana.

When the product is swirled together, the end result is a coral-tinted pink with yellow undertones. It looked a bit chalky against my skin tone when I swatched it, but it was less chalky applied to my cheeks. I think the lighter color paired with a slightly matte finish gives it a drier look, which translates into chalky on my medium skin tone. There is a very faint satin sheen, but it’s incredibly subtle. For those who love more shimmery, metallic highlighters, this is on the opposite end. MAC Flower Fantasy is lighter and shimmery. Chanel Brompton Road is lighter. Chanel Blush Horizon de Chanel is darker, yellower. Benefit Hervana is similar but more coral, lighter. Chanel Pink Cloud is lighter, less pink. MAC Stunner is darker, warmer. Burberry Peony is a smidgen darker and warmer.

The texture is soft, smooth, and finely-milled.  If you want to use it as a blusher, it’s certainly do-able, even on medium skin tones.  I don’t know if this genuinely highlights as it does brightens and adds some natural color to the cheeks that’s not too warm, so it’s instantly brightening and should be flattering on both cool and warm undertones.  It wore around eight hours on my cheeks before staring to fade around the edges.

I got this yesterday, and I love love love it. I am wearing the peach part as a highlighter for Nars Orgasm, and it looks so pretty together. I wish the colored parts were not just an overlay, cause the colors are really gorgeous and I love the texture. I am NW15 in Mac’s foundations, and for the paler ladies, this is a wonderful product.

I think matte highlighters are the new thing—perhaps we’ve gone as shimmery as we can with Nars Illuninators and the Estee Lauder/MAC gelees? Always something new!

Christine I am a little confuse, the colors won’t disappear after many use? The pink and peach? I preorder mine at nordstrom, but I wonder if it is worth to pay almost $30 for it if I am getting launch away blush too. Thank you so much for your help. You look so pretty with the makeup you are wearing.

Christine-Temptalia Avatar

@fabiola The only color that will disappear is the beige color – I gouged it in two places (between the purple/pink and between the pink/orange) and saw the purple, pink, and orange underneath but no beige.

Came in to check out the swatches, stayed for your eye look – it’s GORGEOUS!  I ordered the Feeling Fresh and Jaunty shadows, talked myself out of Barefoot, and now am thinking about going back to MAC’s website and picking up Barefoot and Blue Stripe. I look forward to reading your review on the eye pencils.

It’ll probably depend on the individual compact – it may be as large as what you see in the pan or smaller, because once the beige overlay is gone, the colors aren’t so perfectly distributed. I couldn’t really tell you without completing removing the beige overlay on my particular compact.  Even if it were as large as it looks in the pan right now, you could fit an eyeshadow brush in it at best!

Christine you are the Queen of Beauty Blogging!I’m glad to see the color goes all the way down. I wonder if the “beige” color once gone, that the color you get from it will be slightly stronger , without the beige to lighten it… Or did you notice the beige was there more for design purposes and won’t change the color you get once it is gone?

Christine-Temptalia Avatar

@ButterflyMod The beige adds most of the satin-like sheen, so it’ll just more matte as you go.  You might be able to get slightly stronger color, but I’d say it affects the finish the most, color secondarily.

So dissaointed in this 🙁 I really wantedit to be a highlighter not a blush. Its really nice as a blush but I wanted a highlighter! Oh well. Thanks for the swatches x

Excited for the lipstick review! 🙂 By any chance, won’t you be doing a review for the Beth Ditto x MAC collection too? Thanks Christine 🙂

I don’t really need another highlighter but it looks like it would be a lovely blush..tempted! By the way the look you achieved using all the Hey Sailor collection products is really nice!

Yeah, I don’t really see how this is a “hilighter.” It’s quite pretty all the same, though! And I’m glad you’ve excavated your pan so the rest of us don’t have to wonder 😛

Hi Christine, great review as usual. I was wondering if you think this would show up on a C7 skintone, or if it should be a pass. Thanks.

Hi Christine, I am NC 15 and was looking at this for a blush. I’m torn between this and Benefits Hervana. Which do you think would look better with my yellow undertoned NC15 skin? Or am I looking at the complete wrong range of colors? Thanks so much

Hey Christine, I’ve been debating on whether to get this highlighter to use as a blush or buying fleet fast, which should I go for? (I’m superrr pale) and are there any dupes from mac of these colours because I’ve got springsheen, immortal flower and lovecloud, are any of them too similar? Thanks!! 🙂 xxx

Hi, Christine. Could you help me out? I tried to compare the peach color to illamasqua lover in pictures but couldn’t quite tell. Would you say they are similar?

OutInAPout Avatar

First, I love how you call the one swatch “excavated”.

Second, this bums me out- I was actually hoping the colored stripes were the overspray! Definitely not a highlighter for my fairer than MAC skin 🙁

Hi christine, I’m nc 37, I always want hervana blush from benefit and I tempted to have this too, which one do you think good for me? Thanks:)

AnnaHinojosa Avatar

Hey! what shade are you in MAC foundation? I think i might have the same skintone as you, so i would love to know if this powder would look as flattering on me! thanks xx

Sandra JT Avatar

I picked this up at my local launch party & already loved it. Love it even more after hearing the colors are not oversprays! Just now double checked mine & found the same! WOOT! This definitely is not a highlighter on my medium toned skin, even with the cream overspray still intact. It’s a blush, and a gorgeous one at that…..can’t wait til I can get at more of the peach shade once the cream color wears down.

I also love the blush in this collection, Fleet Fast. Absolutely gorgeous. I’ve been getting a lot of use out of these two products since I bought them.
