Tarte Texas Toast Tarteist Lip Paint

Tarte Texas Toast Tarteist Lip Paint ($20.00 for 0.20 fl. oz.) is a muted, medium rosy mauve with subtle, warm undertones and a satin finish. It had a light-medium consistency that was slightly mousse-like, not as thin as some of the Lip Paints have been. It had a smooth feel on the lips, but it slides around noticeably. The color lasted for four and a half hours on me with some color fading more strongly from the center of the mouth, and the formula was somewhat drying overall. Maybelline Gone Greige (DC, $7.49) is darker, cooler (90% similar). Urban Decay Oblivion (DC, $18.00) is lighter, cooler (80% similar). ColourPop Bianca (DC, $6.50) is lighter, less glossy (80% similar). Too Faced Cool Girl (P, $21.00) is lighter, warmer (85% similar). ColourPop Stingraye (LE, $6.50) is darker, warmer, less glossy (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Tarte Swamp Family Tarteist Lip Paint ($20.00 for 0.20 fl. oz.) is a bright, medium red with strong, blue undertones and a mostly matte finish. The texture of this shade was more mousse-like and a lot less water-like compared to the majority of Lip Paints I have tried, so I could feel it sitting on the lips more as a result, as it almost feels a little clay-like on (but not as heavy as legitimate clay!). It was very pigmented, and the color spread evenly across the lips. It wore well for over six hours, but it was moderately drying over time. Bite Beauty Sour Cherry (DC, $26.00) is glossier (95% similar). ColourPop London Fog (P, $7.00) is darker (95% similar). Hourglass My Icon Is (P, $34.00) is brighter (95% similar). Bite Beauty #078 (P, $18.00) is lighter, less glossy (95% similar). NARS Cherry Bomb (LE, $26.00) is cooler, less glossy (90% similar). MAC Frenesi (LE, $19.00) is warmer (95% similar). Pretty Vulgar Blood Flower (P, $24.00) is brighter (95% similar). Revlon Bread Winner (P, $12.39) is brighter, warmer (95% similar). Tarte Bae (P, $20.00) is warmer (95% similar). Make Up For Ever Red Ink (LE, ) is warmer (90% similar). MAC Carmine Rouge (LE, $19.00) is glossier (95% similar). MAC Candy Cane (LE, $19.00) is darker (95% similar). Tom Ford Beauty LA Woman (P, $60.00) is darker (95% similar). MAC Ruby Woo (Matte) (LE, $19.00) is brighter (95% similar). NYX Eden (P, $6.00) is brighter (95% similar). Tarte Juicy (LE, $20.00) is warmer (95% similar). MAC Como La Flor (LE, $19.00) is darker, more muted, warmer (95% similar). Milani Romance (LE, $8.99) is less glossy (95% similar). MAC Rouge en Snow (LE, $19.00) is brighter (95% similar). ColourPop Creeper (DC, $6.50) is lighter, less glossy (90% similar). Top 20 dupes listed, see the rest. See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

As far as I know, both of these shades are sold out online, but I know that Sephora will have them in-store on July 8th and yesterday at Ulta stores (Texas Toast only).

FORMULA OVERVIEW | Tarte Tarteist Lip Paint ($20.00 for 0.20 fl. oz.) is supposed to be a pigmented, matte liquid lipstick that’s long-wearing. First thing to note is that these never fully dry down, so they are not transfer-proof, but they are less drying than the typical liquid lipstick that dries down completely. They are quite pigmented and despite transferring onto cups, while you eat, and so forth, a lot of the color is left behind. You can also touch-up without having to completely remove the formula. The texture is inconsistent; some shades are thin and have a soft shine even after ten minutes of wear, while others are almost mousse-like in the tube, and these ones tend to be more matte from the get-go. There is a very subtle mint scent, but I don’t notice it at all once it is on. I do notice that it is easier to get these on the teeth than other lip products. The formula is lightly to moderately drying over time with average to long-wear, depending on the shade. Some shades settled into lip lines over time. The majority are satin to semi-matte with a little sheen, which you can either blot once for a matte finish or wait about an hour or two for it to naturally mattify (like any satin finish really).

I like Texas Toast, but have dupes already. OMG, love your eye look, so STUNNING!! Come fall/winter, I’m going to NEED those Buxom shadows in my life!

Alex Avatar

I have to say Texas Toast is really disappointing IRL. On you, it looks warm and wonderful. On my skintone it gives me mannequin face. The formula only lasted about an hour on me before it was completely gone. I’m returning mine. So disappointed.

At the risk of repeating what everyone’s said already, I just LOVE your eye look! It’s just stunning! And it looks fabulous with both lip paints ?.

Miriam N. Avatar

Haha! Those Buxom shadows TOTALLY upstaged these lip paints! I wasn’t sold on the lip paints but pending your review I think the shadows are a definite!

CeeBee Avatar

Pretty colours but we’ve seen them before… and I can’t stand liquid lipsticks that don’t fully dry down, gah!

Sleek Solstice though, I ADORE that and I hope you like it too!

Aaaaand, your eyeshadow is amazing.

??. Not really into emoticons, but had to say s.t. different. Why is buxom hard to get? Is it only in some Sephoras? It’s in my local big, but not the little. But, when you consider how EVERYWHERE BM is……. Sold out online, wow is Bunny popular! Bec, like Nancy says, the colors aren’t that unusual. Not as unusual as she is. Finally got a Gone Greige; Ulta STILL hasn’t put them out. I wish I remembered the name of your reader who liked Cava. Gone Greige makes me think of Cava, if you swap out the beige nude for a grayed beige. They both have that fun lavender behind them. I’m not partial to the Tarteist Lip Paint formula, but idk that they weren’t all moussey. That texture is one of the things that made me write the texture question.

Texas Toast is definitely one of those colors that looks different on everyone. I have to wear it with a slightly darker liner because it seems to match my skin tone so exactly that it erases my lips. I still love the color and I sure as hell am not returning it after what I went through to get it, but I do have to work with it a little. I love how it looks on you and on Bunny in her videos. Nudes are just hard to pull off in a collection because nude means something different to everyone.

i did buy texas toast and i like it but it’s definitely pretty brown on me. i think it’s not quite my favorite for my skintone but i’ve been mixing it with jeffree star mannequin and i’ve loved that.

I thoroughly dig that a YouTuber/ social media personality as down-to-earth and humble as Bunny got a collection, and it makes sense that she went for shades that, while, very dupeable, appeal to a wider audience because of their wearability. I mostly want to purchase them because I want to support that sort of thing, just like when MAC made those cool shades from a certain group of fabulous bloggers. <3 Plus, I've heard a lot fo love for the highlighter in the palette.

i just got my swamp family in the mail from the second release. It pulls so pink on me! its almost like a pinky coral on my lips. still beautiful, but not the red I expected. I wonder if they maybe changed it a little bit? I have pretty dark pigmented lips, so reds and pinks usually pull darker on me.

Jennifer Avatar

I have found that if you use a lip brush the swamp family red does completely dry down. I put on a thin layer, wait a minute or two and then put on another thin layer. Passes the kiss test after a few minutes.
