Marc Jacobs The Social Butterfly (230) Eyeshadow Palette
Marc Jacobs The Social Butterfly (230) Eyeshadow Palette ($59.00 for 0.25 oz.) is a new, exclusive eyeshadow palette to Neiman Marcus/Bergdorf Gooodman. It is a neutral palette with a mix of mattes and shimmers, slightly cooler-than-average warmer shades. I had trouble with the two darkest shades–they could have been easier to work with when it came to blending, but if you normally wear primer, it may not be so noticeable.
The Social Butterfly #1 is a light, creamy yellow muted by beige with warm undertones and a matte finish. It had a soft, silky texture that was smooth and finely-milled, which made it blendable on the skin. The eyeshadow lasted for eight hours before fading on me. The Social Butterfly #6 is a dark brown with neutral-to-warm undertones and a matte finish. It had semi-opaque color payoff with a lightly dusty texture that could have blended better on the lid–it could get a little patchy without a primer to help smooth it out. The Social Butterfly #7 is a deep black with cool undertones and pink micro-shimmer. It looks and applies mostly as a matte black as a lot of the shimmer disappears during blending. What a lovely selection of colors! I find it nicely balanced. If not for me I keep it in mind for a gift 🙂 !
Great idea!
Came here to say the same thing
Wauw, your eyelook is beautiful!
Thank you!
This is quite a versatile neutral/naked palette! One can easily do either a cool-toned or a warmer toned eye look with this. If I didn’t already have so many dupes and similar shades, I’d be all over this one like bees to honey!
Very true, Nancy! It is one of the “cooler” palettes I’ve seen, though for sure not TRULY cool-toned, lol!
I love shade #04.
Awesome!
Me too!
Me too Rachel, it’s really the only shade that’s wowing me in this palette!
4 is also my favorite! Got to get one of those dupes, soon!
Christine, I think the scores are missing.
I checked, and they are showing for me! Could you refresh?
Oh, I see the scores now. Strange, I hit refresh before and even reloaded your website in my browser, but couldn’t see the scores. Ok, it’s a nice workhorse set of colors, that can easily go from day to night. I like how the colors aren’t too warm or orange (looking at you Tarte for PBJ and Peach palettes!) and #7 looks fixable with primer, but I have enough of these colors in my stash. # 7 reminds me of a tone- down version of CP Disco Ball.
I love Marc Jacobs eye palettes, its the only brand that I collect every single palette released, both the No. 7s and the No. 3s.
Did you get this one, Christina?
I haven’t gotten all the 3 pans but I have every 7 pan and the holiday palette. This one is my favorite of them all!! It’s so pretty!!!!!
I think you accidentally left your grading off. This looks a little troublesome and by being a NM exclusive, I can’t see it in person. So, I’m passing.
Hey Nicole,
I checked, and they are showing for me! Could you refresh?
yes..working now. I had that “review limit=3 message” too
For some reason, I couldn’t see the score? It says ‘[review limit="3"]‘ at the end of the page when I load temptalia.com. When I open the post, I can see the swatch pictures, but still not the score… I’m using the latest chrome browser on a mac.
Weird! I will look into it.
Thank you for swatching this palette! I have Marc Jacob’s The Dreamer palette and I love it so much, so getting another one of the palettes is something I plan on doing in the future. I do like the look of this one-especially with the inclusion of the lavender color. It’s a nice touch of color without straying from a neutral look. I wanted to point out that in your description you said that it’s exclusive to Neiman Marcus/Barneys. Did you mean Bergdorf Goodman? To my knowledge Barneys doesn’t carry Marc Jacobs Beauty, although if they did/start to that would make me ridiculously happy.
No problem, Nicole! Yes, Bergdorf Goodman. Sorry – I’m an idiot!
Ok, so at $60 for 6 shadows ( who needs another black-really?) I’d consider this a luxury brand and I’m simply not seeing anything special about it. It looks dry on and 7/8 hr. wear time is average. Glad I waited for your review Christine- it’s a nay for me tho.
Easy skip for you then 🙂
Try $71 here in Canada. For that price, it would have to have a higher rating. As I said in my comment further down, in my opinion, there are better palettes to be had at better price points.
Naked 1.5 by Marc Jacobs. I like shade #4 though!
Kind of!
Where have the Love It or Leave It buttons gone? I really liked them! Please bring them back.
I’m seeing them there? What browser/device are you using?
I concur, please 🙂
They are showing? If they are not, please let me know what browser/device you are using, as that would at least help us look into the issue, but I have checked my iPhone and my desktop computer (three browsers) and everything looks correct.
Heck yeah! I bought this one as soon as it went live for purchase on the Neiman Marcus website. I was glad to have heard about MJ Beauty doing an exclusive line for Neiman Marcus since that’s not a store or website I frequent. But I stalked their site until I was able to score it — the same day!
Haha! Yay 🙂 I tried but couldn’t get it to add to my cart – had to do a livechat and they did it for me, lol!
I have The Dreamer palette from this collection and I love the quality and pigmentation, the vibrancy of the colors. I think these pallettes are both chic in packaging design and high quality when it comes to the product itself. This palette has the tones right up my alley as well 🙂
The Dreamer is so nice 🙂
I wish No. 4 was sold as a single! It’s absolutely gorgeous!
I wish MJB did singles!
You look great in this palette….
Aw, thank you!
I know I can dupe this, but I likes it!
Dupe it!!
I love how you used #4 from the inner corner, swept around to under the eye.
The palette is still too overall warm for my tastes, but I can see how it would work for a lot of people. 🙂
Thanks, Pami!
This might be nice for someone fairly new to eye shadow palettes but all of the shades are so “dupe-able”, as is the whole palette itself, it seems to me. Given the price and the rating, I think the original Naked palette or one of the Chocolate Bar palettes would be much better choices for someone looking for that first “neutrals” all in one palette.
Most definitely! It is dupable but easy to wear. I can see why it was what they created to kick-off the launch of MJB at Neiman Marcus/Bergdorf Goodman, though.
It can be hard to tell, since shades look different on different people, but colours 1, 3 and 5 look like dead ringers for his 3-shadow The Glam palette. (Not a bad thing, because that’s probably my favourite one of his palettes. But it might be worth checking if before buying this new one, if you own The Glam.)
They seem to overlap with past palettes for sure – which doesn’t really surprise me if this was created as a retailer exclusive for the kick-off of the launch of MJB there 🙁
A very pretty, easy group of neutrals – but far too many mattes for me. Besides, once you have the naked palettes, you have a lot of these kinds of colours.
A beautiful eye look Christine.
Thank you!
Hi Christine, Can you confirm if all the shades in this palette are repeats from the bigger Holiday Palette? I was going to order this one until i read somewhere it is the same shades from Free Spirit Palette. Thank you
I’m not sure – there definitely seemed like overlap to me, but I don’t have anything from Marc Jacobs that says that.
Doesn’t seem so to me, though #s 1 & 6 have pretty close dupes in FS. Got that one. 4 has no even distant relatives in FS. And the others may be second to third cousins. Don’t think you’d overlap too much.
That last dark color is a bit disappointing, but I think this is a nice palette overall. I agree with others who have pointed out its potential versatility.
If those last two darker shades had been easier to work with, this would be a REALLY good palette.
The price is surprisingly good for Marc Jacobs products. I like the colors but have many similar.
Glad you have dupes, Susan!
This looks like it’s a nice palette — too bad it’s an exclusive! I really love color #4. Love #5, too, but have dupes for it. Interestingly, it’s a neutral palette that doesn’t have a shade I’d use on my hood — #2 is too light, #6 is too dark, and I prefer slightly satin to matte mattes there. So it wouldn’t work as a stand-alone palette for me.
Since it wouldn’t work as a standalone, it seems like it is a good skip!
Pretty combination of colors. Not that I need any more of ’em, but still, pretty!
Very true 🙂
#4 is very pretty. It made me go check if Colourpop’s Mixed Tape was still available, though! XD (As of right now, that’s a yes.)
I keep waiting for one of these MJ palettes to wow me, because I do think that’s some nice packaging. But at the pricepoint, I’m going to have to really love at least 5-6 of the colors, and that hasn’t happened yet.
You are a tough one to impress 😉
I just have way too much eyeshadow! It’s like with the Bare Minerals pressed shadows. They seem nice, but the color selections haven’t yet excited me.
