ColourPop Mr. Blonde Ultra Matte Liquid Lipstick

ColourPop Mr. Blonde Ultra Matte Liquid Lipstick ($6.00 for 0.11 fl. oz.) is described as a “bright true turquoise.” It’s a brightened, medium sky blue with cool undertones and a satin-matte finish. It was mostly matte, but there was an almost vinyl-like sheen to it–and it took forever to dry down. Even when “dry” after a half hour, there was still a very light tack in places. This shade had intense pigmentation that went on smoothly and evenly, but it had a thicker consistency that “cracked” as soon as I smiled. It felt a bit clingier, and it was prone to flaking from the center of the mouth over time, though the majority of the color was intact after six hours. The formula was somewhat drying overall. NYX Blue Velvet (P, $6.00) is darker, more muted, glossier (90% similar). MAC Shockvalue (LE, $19.00) is darker, glossier (90% similar). Make Up For Ever C602 (DC, $22.00) is lighter, brighter (90% similar). MAC Dreampot (P, $19.00) is lighter, glossier (85% similar). KVD Beauty Dreamer (P, $20.00) is lighter, more muted, warmer (85% similar). MAC Instant Icon (LE, $19.00) is lighter, glossier (85% similar). MAC Blue Bang (LE, $19.00) is more shimmery, darker, more muted (85% similar). Bite Beauty Nearly Neon Blue (LE, $26.00) is darker, cooler, glossier (80% similar). Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Pool Boy (DC, $18.00) is lighter, brighter (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

ColourPop Jellies Ultra Matte Liquid Lipstick ($6.00 for 0.11 fl. oz.) is described as a “rich cobalt blue.” It’s a lightly brightened, medium-dark navy blue with cool undertones and a soft sheen. Like Mr. Blonde, it didn’t dry down to a flat matte finish, even after waiting for a half hour–it looked more like vinyl or plastic on. The texture of this one is very runny, and I urge you to keep your tube upright when you’re using it; I had it slightly angled, and I had blue lipstick spilled everywhere! It had mostly opaque pigmentation, but it was difficult to keep it smooth as it was slightly tacky for an hour of wear, so any time the lips touched within that first hour, there was a risk of the color lifting in places. It wore for seven hours in total, but I had some minor flaking from the center of the mouth. NYX Sinful (P, $6.00) is warmer, glossier (90% similar). Anastasia Paint (P, $20.00) is more shimmery, darker (85% similar). Anastasia Primary #5 (Vol. 1) (PiP, ) is darker, cooler (85% similar). MAC Midnight Troll (LE, $19.00) is cooler, glossier (85% similar). MAC Blue Bang (LE, $19.00) is lighter, warmer (85% similar). Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Vain (DC, $18.00) is darker, warmer, glossier (80% similar). Urban Decay Control (DC, $18.00) is lighter, glossier (80% similar). Bite Beauty Nearly Neon Blue (LE, $26.00) is lighter (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Formula Summary: ColourPop Ultra Ultra Matte Liquid Lipstick ($6.00 for 0.11 fl. oz.) is a long-wearing, pigmented lipstick that starts off glossy and dries down quickly to that super flat matte finish. They have minimal transfer with some of the lighter shades having almost none for the first few hours of wear, but any time you’ve had a meal, they lose that transfer-resistant quality to a noticeable degree. They tend to wear anywhere from six to ten hours with darker shades maintaining better color coverage and wear over a longer period of time. Some shades get a little drying about two-thirds to three-fourths through the wear, while a few shades have been fairly non-drying even many hours into wear. They fade away evenly with most color loss occurring from the center of the lips if eating a more oil-based meal but the majority of color survives a meal. Reapplication has been hit or miss and tends to depend on how well it wore away and how easily the shade applies normally, but reapplication tends to emphasize the lip’s natural texture significantly compared to initial application and gives lips a very wrinkled, dried-up look. I’ve layered gloss on top of some shades with moderate success, though it will obviously lose the matte finish and will transfer and I’ll get tiny flakes where the matte lip color has lifted by mixing with gloss but has been pretty minimal. The formula had no discernible taste or scent.

I skipped Mr. Blonde in my order. But, I did get Jellies . I know I may not wear it out of the house unless I am on vacation somewhere because basically and I am quoting my 10-year old dtr sadly here ,”this town doesn’t like fun makeup ( like you mommy) “!
But, I love the way they look on you! Spill precautions noted. ( Thank you for that). I’m not sure if I’m going to get to wear Jellies at all though anyhow with that not drying issue. I need to smile at some point. Blue lips and no smiling = scary looking lady.

Nicole, that’s my situation here in ultra-conservative AZ: People do NOT wear “fun” makeup colors here! I get strange looks when I go out and about with an artsy or dark eyeshadow look, can anyone just imagine what heck I’d catch with bright blue lips?!? They give me sideways looks (and men proposition me! Eeewww!!!) just for wearing purple!

Nicole Avatar

Oh geez Nancy..well, I’ve never been “propositioned” while wearing funky makeup! I agree..eww.People can have so many misconceptions based on what they see. Its sad. I mostly just get looked at weird and it makes me just not wear bold colors often. But, purple has my heart. Just rock it and ignore the pervs!

Nancy T Avatar

Especially HERE! AZ is just behind the times, it seems, so people assume so many bizarre and rude things. Yeah, I rock my purple lippys anyway, and just try to ignore the weirdos and the ones who will only rock lip balm and mascara!

Nicole Avatar

I know you do. Although,I totally believe in doing what makes one happy and of course, I have those lip balm and( for me it’s under eye concealer) days,i just try to not let my sadness for what they are missing in life not show. Life is short. They may as well enjoy it while they are here.

Nancy T Avatar

I agree 110%. I just carry myself confidently and try not to let some people’s narrow view of how they believe everyone ought to “conform” to their style get to me. Yes, they are missing out! And I do sometimes (rarely) go out with just bb cream, brows, mascara and balm, too. Oh, blush too, lol!

“B” doesn’t sounds too bad for unusual shades like blue and at that price, but my main thought is that the NYX Sinful dupe looks so pretty, the finish is really nice!

WARPAINTandUnicorns Avatar

Funnily enough, I’ve been playing with pigments over a number of these liquid lipstick formula and any shimmer ones will give the shade a sheer satin finish. Sephora brans Cream Lip Stain are basically the satin version of all the matte formula’s if you’re interested… i need to get more of them becuase they are soo comfortable to wear. lol

I bought both of these (they’re supposed to arrive today) and I was hoping that they’d get a great review. I see there’s some drawbacks, but at least they did decently! I think I’ll probably still enjoy them; for me, the interesting colors and great price point are worth the slow dry-down and a bit of cracking. As always, thanks for the thorough, honest review, Christine!

I just got my first CP order including Midi and Trap. Gotta say, I really like this formula. It’s so light! I’m probably going to buy Jellies and a few other more wild colors with my next order.

Katherine T. Avatar

I kind of like Jellies because it’s so bold and unique. It’s not really my color, but I’m fortunate enough to live in place that’s pretty progressive, and I can see girls rocking this with some blue hair thrown in !

Alys Persson Avatar

That light blue really takes me back to when I was little (in the 80s.) I can’t put my finger on it, but I must have had that shade haha

While I definitely get a kick out of the Reservoir Dogs “Mr. Blonde” reference, these are a no-go for me. The prolonged dry-down, and the fact that IF I were to ever go blue, there are definitely better blues out here, ie; OCC Technopagan, for one. Or even MAC Matte Royal.

when i received jellies , i thought someone had tampered with it because when i opened the tube , the stopper was saturated with product .

turns out , it’s runny & is prone to leaking like you said .

i also agree about this not drying down to a complete matte finish . i was bummed that it took FOREVER to dry & when it did dry , it still had a sheen like you described .

i wanted to love it , but abh paint is still my go-to blue liquid lippie .

nicole o. Avatar

yes , paint is really creamy & opaque !

dry down is definitely longer than the ultra matte lips .

i would say about 5-10 minutes , but i personally think it’s worth it since it’s such a gorgeous shade .

I’m so sad! I ordered Mr. Blonde and Dr. M and my mailman delivered them to the wrong address! I’m going to usps to resolve it in the morning but I was soooo excited for these! I really hope these get in my hands soon.

Selena Avatar

I have both and I second you on the runny formulation of Jellies, I took out the wand too fast and there was a splatter of blue on my counter! These certainly seem to be different than the original shades in terms of formula!

spring Avatar

Though I can’t see myself actually ever wearing either shade on my lips and leaving the house (I wish I had the confidence to rock these!), I LOVE both colours! Has anyone tried wearing these as eyeliner? How awesome would that look, though transfer might be an issue since these two particular shades don’t seem to dry down fully?
