Light Me Red (119)

YSL Light Me Red (119) Rouge Volupte Shine Oil-in-Stick ($38.00 for 0.11 oz.) is a slightly muted, medium-dark pink-red with fine, gold and ruby red pearl throughout. The finish was lightly glossy and shiny, which gave it a more luminous sheen that gave my lips a plumper look.

The pigmentation was medium to semi-opaque in a single layer, which applied fairly evenly to my lips, though I felt it wasn’t quite as even as other shades have applied for me in the same formula. The consistency was lightweight, creamy and moderately slippery, and it was very much as touted–a lipstick and lip balm hybrid–so it applied comfortably but wasn’t the longest-wearing formula. This shade wore nicely for four and a half hours and left a very faint stain behind while the formula felt hydrating.

Formula Overview

$38.00/0.11 oz. - $345.45 Per Ounce

The formula is supposed to be "deeply hydrating" and "melt" onto the lips with a "pop of color" and give long-term hydration. It is described as having "medium coverage" and "irreverent shine." The color coverage was typically medium, as described, though some of the deeper shades were more buildable to semi-opaque coverage.

They're a very, very creamy, emollient formula; they slip-slide as they melt against the lips during application, and it feels luxurious to apply but can be easily over-applied. It's just the type of texture that lends itself to over-application without adding more coverage, so I recommend being mindful in order to ensure you'll get plenty of usage out of each tube. Fortunately, once on, they don't feel thick or overly slippery, so it doesn't feel like the lipstick is constantly moving while worn.

They have a high-shine, almost glossy, finish that often smoothed out my lip lines without settling into them, and the latter made it more impressive due to the amount of color and slip. The wear time varied from shade to shade but typically landed between three and five hours. Some shades leave a faint stain behind--usually the mid-tone and darker hues. The formula has a sweet, mango scent but no discernible taste.

Take My Red Away (120)

YSL Take My Red Away (120) Rouge Volupte Shine Oil-in-Stick ($38.00 for 0.11 oz.) is a medium-dark, poppy red with warm undertones and barely-there, golden pearl throughout the luminous finish. The texture was smooth, creamy, and moderately emollient without being heavy, so it was comfortable to apply but could easily be over-applied as it glided so readily across my lips.

It had medium to semi-opaque color payoff in a single layer, which was as described, and the color applied evenly on my lips and didn’t emphasize my lip texture or lip lines. The color lasted well for four hours and felt lightly hydrating over time.

Come and sit 2 meters away from me on the “don’t like to waste my money” bench, Rachel!!! I bought one of the YSL lipstick in oil (or whatever the name is) lipsticks a while back and it is really lovely but it should never have been called “lipstick”. It’s really more a gloss and I’ve had glosses that wore better. Christine’s honest appraisal of the wear time is pretty much accurate (though I talk a lot and drink coffee or water so the wear time for me was probably less). The Sephora ones come in a stunning array of shades and I really, REALLY like them. Have you tried any of them yet?

I’ll stand 6’ away to agree with you guys. I got two of the older release and love them, but even if it’s a non-mask time, it’s on my chin and neck, threatening a lip product. Right now, I don’t see any sense in higher end lip products. These are lovely, but hardly unique.
