Wayne Goss Eye Kohls Reviews & Swatches
Precious Opal
Wayne Goss Precious Opal Eye Kohl Pencil ($14.00 for 0.04 oz.) is a dark brown with subtle, warm undertones and a very fine pearl throughout–it almost looked matte from a distance but had a bit of extra oomph. The texture felt smooth and a bit creamier than other shades in the formula–more like a cross between modern pencils (waxier, more silicone-heavy, like Urban Decay’s pencil eyeliners) and old school pencils (firmer, sharper).
It had nearly opaque coverage in a single stroke, which deposited color evenly as I worked it against my lower lash line. It wore decently for six hours on my lower lash line but was almost faded to nothing after nine hours of wear.

Formula Overview
$14.00/0.04 oz. - $350.00 Per Ounce
The formula is supposed to have a "fine tip" while still being able to "glide over skin with a cream-to-silk feel" that doesn't scratch, tug, or skip and can be used to line the eyes, as an "all-over base," or smudged along the lash line or applied to the waterline.
It's a sharper pencil, which is a more "old school" formula compared to softer, more rounded pencils that tend to feel waxier (often containing more silicone for glide and slip). For those who like more precise, thin lines but prefer a pencil format, this type of formula is better for that. They also seemed to have more depth in the actual colors and were definitely less prone to tugging/feeling sharp compared to some I've tried in the past.
They were harder for me to use on my waterline, because the sharpness of the pencil did cause my waterline to water. They had four to six hours of wear on my water line and six to seven hour wear on my lower lash line, but they were quicker to fade and two shades were barely visible after nine hours of wear.
The formula yielded good coverage in a single stroke and was buildable or mostly opaque when applied with shorter, more overlapping strokes (which is really more how I apply eyeliner).

Rich Hazel
Wayne Goss Rich Hazel Eye Kohl Pencil ($14.00 for 0.04 oz.) is a deep brown with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. It had good color payoff that adhered fairly evenly in a single layer but was best built up with a second layer. The texture was firmer but mostly smooth without being uncomfortable to work with on my lower lash line, though it was less comfortable on my water line.
The eyeliner lasted decently for six and a half hours on my lower lash line before fading noticeably (five hours on my waterline), but there was very little left after nine hours of wear (like from a normal viewing distance, you wouldn’t know I was wearing eyeliner).

Obsidian
Wayne Goss Obsidian Eye Kohl Pencil ($14.00 for 0.04 oz.) is a deep, true black with neutral-to-cool undertones and a matte finish. It had semi-opaque coverage in a single layer (and could be built up to mostly opaque coverage) at a comfortable pressure; I felt like to get opaque coverage, it was a bit too firm to do so comfortably (it made my waterline water at a lighter pressure).
The pencil glided smoothly across my lower lash line without tugging, but it wasn’t as comfortable to use on my waterline, though it deposited color evenly. It had faded quite noticeably, though with minimal build up into the inner/outer corners, by seven hours on my lower lash line (nothing was on my waterline after six hours) and was barely visible after nine hours of wear.

Oh dear, not that good and not that special (in terms of shade choices)…what a shame, I thought this would be so much better.
These are appropriate for the palette, for a first issue. A deep brown and dark brown? Seriously? This moment is a bit cruel: I really don’t see agonizing over these color choices. They seem pretty obvious. Unfortunately, the performance is nothing special. a big disappointment to this fan.
Gone in 6-7 hours is not something I would ever expect to read about a modern eye pencil formula! These sound like rubbish.
I have such positive feelings about Wayne himself, having watched his videos for years and years. I don’t have any of his brushes (it’s the same old “in-store shopping, please” issue for me) but I always figured that if he released a makeup line, it would off the charts amazing. Given the prices ($177 for the palette and liners, which is insane) in Canada and the poor performance, I am really disappointed – for him, because I do wish him success, and for makeup lovers who had higher expectations of him.
Thought the eye liners would be something I could pickup from the release. Oh well guess I’m not getting anything then. Seems Wayne needs to work on the makeup a little more or stick to the great makeup brushes.
These are good basic color choices and go well with the palette. I was expecting the quality to be better, because the lip pencils I got are wonderful. What a shame these don’t quite hit the mark. I know he likes slightly firmer pencils. I haven’t watched his release announcement video yet, so I’m wondering why he chose kohl over a more modern formula, unless it just was for more firmness. *making note to actually watch his video*
This is interesting to me. All my makeup is gone by lunchtime. I wonder where it goes.
Oh no! There are a few formulas I’ve tried where it just feels like my lids eat the product because it’s gone but it’s not like it all fell off under the eye or anything, lol!
I’m curious do most of your liners last longer than 6 hours? Because for me that would be plus it lasted that long
Most eyeliners last seven to eight hours on me before they start to fade but it’s rare that the liner isn’t even visible after 10 hours (it’s just faded/thinner than it was originally). UD eyeliners last 8-10 hours on me. MJB eyeliners last 10-14 hours on me.
I think it’s hard to judge eye liners by how long they wear, since that is very individual. I have always been amazed about how long Christine can make both liners and lipsticks and glosses and make up overall sit so well for so long. For me I have to touch up lips several times a day regardless of formula, and if I use eye liner on my waterline I have to keep track of it also a lot during the day… I don’t think any eye line formula stays on my watery allergic runny eyes for more than a few hours before they begin to fade…
Now this is supposed to be an old school kohl pencil if I understand it correctly? They are usually not made to set or become water proof but rather to be able to be smudged and moved around and therefore ought to give less hold or staying power compared to the more modern type of eye liners that set after a minute or so and then become supposedly more budge proof…
For me I have problems with most types of liners which I guess is common when you have runny eyes. But therefore how they fade becomes more important for me. And kohl’s usually fades nicer on me than the ones that sets, since they tend more to flake off in bits and pieces while kohl’s fade more evenly albeit in a more smudgy way. So like everything else it’s very individual what works best.
What seemed more worrying is that these seem according to Christine as a bit hard in the formula even to the point it’s point Ines irritated her eyes making them water. That is not common for kohl’s who usually are very soft even when sharpened…
Well, well we’ll see. I will try them out anyway… I like how black the black really is… and that it is leaning toward the cool and not the warm.
I did smudge out the liner when used on my lower lash line (with the WG pencil brush), as a FYI! On Beautylish, it says to line, use as a base, or smudge on the lash line as well as the waterline. I suffer from general allergies (my eyes are always red, especially the underside of the lid/skin – ewww!), so I have moderate wateriness but usually see that impact maybe the very outer edge of something (where the wateriness accumulates) vs. total disappearance – hopefully that makes sense.
Have you ever tried Marc Jacobs’ Highliners? I feel like those are some of the longest-wearing eyeliners on the market (that a lot of people have good luck with, not just me!). I know that there are some readers who don’t have great luck with UD’s 24/7 pencils.
