Urban Decay Naked Ultraviolet Eyeshadow Palette ($49.00) is the newest in the Naked palette line-up and has a mix of warmer, peachier neutrals along with lavender/purple shades.

I tend to only provide first impressions for particularly hyped-up products that may take longer to review and/or if there are some immediate concerns… and this palette has me concerned; several shimmers were papery (thin, dry, firm, and literally, sounds like sandpaper when swatched with a fingertip). It definitely requires a primer underneath, and the majority of the shimmers have been best applied with fingertips or a dampened brush to get medium or higher coverage, smooth application, and true-to-pan color. A lot of the shimmer gets lost applied dry or over bare skin, unfortunately. We will see how it holds up with respect to fading throughout the day!

There’s a video below (you’ll have to go to the second slide) of the papery sounds 🙁

Some of these swatches look very different compared to the ones I was seeing last night on YT, so I’m feeling a bit undecided as to whether or not to even be interested in this palette. As it is, I do have more than enough purple and purple themed e/s palettes probably. ND Lila and its Mini, PML La Vie En Rose and the Sith Star Wars 6-pan, CP Lilac You A Lot and It’s My Pleasure, and a lot of MAC Pro Pans in purple, too. We’ll see.

For the sake of purple loves and out of the soft spot I have for the original Naked palette, I do hope this one performs well and gets a good rating but while I like a purple shadow here and there, this palette is just too purple for me and has a few shades I just don’t care for personally. But do I hear Nancy gasping????

I agree. I used to love Urban decay, the whole vibe, and the quality was always great for me! It’s so bizarre, it seems like most other eyeshadow brands have gotten better, and ud made theirs worse! I used to love all their shimmers- buttery and pigmented. It’s so bizarre they would change that!

Wow, looks like a total miss! It reminds me of the overall vibes from ND Lila (which I have and love) and so I think this will end up being an easy pass for me. It feels like Urban Decay has lost some of their innovation lately. Hopefully it is not a trend.

I saw three first impressions of this on YouTube, and I feel like one of the comments I saw on one of the channels said it best. This is meant to be for someone that doesn’t have a lot of skill in makeup to use colour. I saw a lot of complaints about a lack of purple mattes, but the 3 people I watched did a great job using all of the purple shades in a multi-dimensional look. I feel like this palette would challenge me to get out of my comfort zone of using only a pop of shimmer just on the lid.

I’ve feared that this should have tempted me and it would have been very difficult to resist… However the swatches are so different from the promotional pictures… They appear weak in pigmentation. Moreover it’s not really the purple I’m searching for. I’m crazy for blue based purple and violets and perwinkle, and I’m always searched for that tones in palettes… Ending up with more fuxia, plums or pink based purples instead… Exactly like this. Half neutral, half fuxia or plum. That’s mean that, apart for the unappealing swatches, I have dupes for almost every shades

Much as I love a good purple shadow the answer is in the “good”. These don’t appear to meet that criteria. This will be an easy pass not just because of the poor quality, based on report and swatches, but also because I do have a lot of purple shades. This would likely be better with a few pops of other colours and of course, better quality. UD has fallen so far I don’t know if they can regroup without a major overhaul. I haven’t purchased anything from UD in forever. I can’t even remember the last time. Might actually have been the Born To Run palette which was back in 2018, I think.

This confirms I’m still stick-a-fork-in-it-done with Urban Decay, which is unfortunate. If this color scheme (with better shadows) had come out instead of, say, Naked 3, I’d have been all over that.

On the other hand, I’d consider buying it once it gets to TJ Maxx and pressing something better into that glorious packaging.

I love the colours UD chose especially VR, Lucid and Euphoric but I really want this to be a palette by Pat McGrath, the swatches just look too thin.

This is a lovely everyday purplish peachy palette that I would normally snap up if it’s anything like the Born to Run formula except i’m really not sure on these swatches. I’m going to wait for the actual review.

At this point, they know better. And taking advantage is something I fear will be a constant as less people can test in person. I really loved what they tried to do. Although, I would have made it even better. They had their chance. Sadly.

I read some random reviews and found many to rate it mediocre at best. These were customer reviews so I trust your opinion more. Many comments were similar to yours with complaints about short wear time.
For what it’s worth.

I get the violet idea since purple was always UD’s color, but you can’t make this poor quality if you say this is you brand’s color. I have all the naked palettes and some of them I really love because, even if the shadows aren’t as vibrant as Natasha Denona or Pat shadows, they’re very easy to use (wet or dry), longlasting and create a thin layer over the lid (instead of thick creamy layer that may emphasize skin texture). I love the Naked 2, 1, Smokey and Reloaded color wise, while Heat and Honey are very very good quality. If the Ultraviolet would have the same formulas as the Honey, it would be a dream. It’s sad what’s happening to Urban Decay. I’m a fan and i hate seeing them release poor quality shadows and not improving, not evolving, not even sticking with some good quality formulas they already have (like in the naked honey, born to run, heavy metals). I’m not even mad they’re trying to milk the “Naked cow” as much as possible, but hey, at least make it good quality. I’ll probably get it someday just because I have all the collection, but it’s not even competing quality-wise with other palettes we get nowadays. I hope Urban Decay gets a wake up call and comes with some really good quality shadows, new and improved and a cool toned Naked, inspired by the Naked 2. They have the money to invest in research and new formulations, if they won’t do better, they will go down soon. You simply can’t survive as a brand just because you were famous, a pioneer, a decade ago.

Thanks so much for this. Personally love the color story, so am really disappointed w/ the swatching not giving better results. Especially VR I was baffled to see — or well, almost NOT see?

I’m really curious about how Dazed & VR compare to Naked Heat’s Lumbre & Scorched though; it seems they might be quite similar? Same w/ Digital & Ember — maybe not TOO far fetched? Also, Purple Dust makes me think of the Ether 24/7 liner big time.

I’ll very much be looking fwd to your dupes list, that’s for sure.

Rachel R. Avatar

I’ve been seeing mixed reviews on this, though none were really enthusiastic. Most were saying the colors were buildable, it seems Purple Dust lives up to its name. I think everyone else was using over primer, though.

This is really disappointing, especially considering UD used to do great purples. If this palette’s quality had been on par with Naked Honey, or even Naked Heat, I’d have been so much happier. I’m passing until it goes on sale for half price — and I get a deal on top of that.
