Lightbeam

Urban Decay Lightbeam Summer 2018 Eyeshadow Palette ($24.00 for 0.20 oz.) is a new, limited edition palette exclusively available at Macy’s. I noticed something curious about this palette as listed on the brand’s website, which was that they listed ingredients for two shades as ingredients for past released shades–Solstice for Golden Hour and Riff for Vibe. Sure enough, there’s certainly a lot of similarities between those pairs with Solstice being a richer, more sparkly variation on Golden Hour and Riff just having better quality than Vibe but otherwise seemed quite similar. The palette felt like a rehash of past shades to begin with, so while odd, it wasn’t at all a surprise just how closely they lined up.

Nudie

Nudie is a soft beige with warm, yellow undertones and a matte finish. It had semi-opaque pigmentation that applied fairly evenly to bare skin but would work better over a primer. The consistency was lightly powdery but finely-milled and blendable in practice. It wore well for seven and a half hours on me before fading.

Formula Overview

$19.00/0.05 oz. - $380.00 Per Ounce

The formula is typically described as "high-pigment" that "stays on your lids" and goes on "seamlessly." Their permanent range has a lot of fantastic shades in it, and many of them are pigmented, blendable, and long-wearing. Some of their matte are real workhorse kind of shades with soft, smooth, silky, and blendable textures, while their shimmers and pearly shades are very rich in payoff and apply beautifully to the lid. They wear between seven and nine hours on me, depending on the shade and finish.

Vibe

Vibe is a medium, golden brown with flecks of gold sparkle over a matte finish. It had medium coverage with a more powdery texture, so it was prone to sheering out without a primer underneath (and then it was, at least, buildable). This shade stayed on for seven and a half hours before showing signs of fading.

Paradox

Paradox is a brighter, medium orange with warm, tangerine shimmer. The eyeshadow had great color coverage in a single layer. The texture was smooth to the touch, soft and blendable but not powdery or prone to fallout. It lasted well for eight hours on me.

Golden Hour

Golden Hour has a dirty, plummy-brown base with blue-to-green shifting sparkle with a more metallic finish overall. It had good coverage, but the color appeared a lot less intense and lighter applied than it did in the pan. It had a dense, smooth texture that had flatter, more fleck-like sparkle than chunky glitter. It wore well for eight hours but had slight fallout over time.

That’s interesting about the shade names on the ingredient listings! I noticed the original marketing copy I saw a few weeks ago called these “5 brand-new shades” — it jumped out at me because I already own Nudie (in the Naked Ultimate Basics palette) and Influence (in the Basquiat Gold Griot palette), and I recognized the shade Paradox, as well. But I’m not seeing the “brand-new” language on their site anymore…

I mean, I do like this color scheme — I own singles of Riff and Solstice, plus the two palettes I mentioned above, so I kinda have this already — but if it’s gonna be lazy, it would be nice to at least match the original quality. Riff is such a good shadow!

Jessica Avatar

I’m interested in what the intent behind this palette is and who they are marketing it to. I can’t think of anyone who this product would be of interest to. It’s not neutral enough to be an everyday or travel palette, it doesn’t have enough shades to be a travel palette, it’s just a very perplexing palette to me. Is it meant to be a companion palette? I’m really confused on why they decided to release this. I think an additional, deeper matte shade would have helped this palette out a lot. As it stands now, it looks incomplete.

Helena Avatar

I was already disinterested in this palette when I first saw it, but seeing that all of the shades in a retailer-specific (“exclusive!!”) palette are previously released makes me like it even less. I’m also really tired of shades like Golden Hour being released when we already have so many from Urban Decay, MAC, ColourPop, Makeup Geek, Wet n Wild, Buxom, Tarte, NYX, Butter London, Lemon Felon; indie, drugstore, high-end…et cetera.

Jujubes Avatar

I felt the same way about the small Heat palette too. The shades are redundant from the Naked Heat palette with no real value to purchase the small version(the big one has many redundant shades already). The small Kristen Leanne eye palette was simlar to that, and now this one, too many of the same colors. It would be nice if they at least throw in a metallic blue in this to make it like a mini Beached palette. I have a drawer full of these shades already and I don’t even want to consider yet another orange/gold/brown palette.

AB Avatar

This one is not for me; Riff is my daily go-to but I am stocked for that and the rest of the colors are not for me. I’m still sorely tempted by Beach. So this makes second UD LE palette in a row with a retailer exclusive — Beach is Ulta only. Wonder why they’re doing this, to sort best outlet for their products maybe

Inge Avatar

I bought this palette today during a Macy’s sale. I have to say I LOVE it person. The colors are actually quite beautiful and cohesive. It’s not for drama. I think it’s a hidden gem
