The Summer Season: MAC Violetta Lipstick

MAC Violetta Lipstick ($14.00 for 0.10 oz.) is a red-based violet purple with a glossy sheen. It has an amplified creme finish and a permanent PRO shade (which does, occasionally, make an appearance on as part of seasonal trend reports). It has a very reddish-purple base with more of a true violet iridescent/overlay, but it looks cohesive once applied. Personally, I don’t wear Violetta on its own, but I love pairing it with iridescent or milky pinks as well as fuchsias to brighten it.

Is this the right purple lipstick for you? Would you wear it?

The Summer Season is a series of posts featuring bright, vibrant shades of coral, orange, and pink lipsticks and lipglosses — all perfect for a summer of fun — that runs through July 2010.

Hey could you maybe show the lip combinations with violetta sometime??? I’d love to see how I can work with this lipstick shade before I buy it!

Nicole Avatar

Awww, so many people are “leaving it.” This lipstick is steaming HOT! Not that I would wear it out of the house if I owned it, but it’s still really great. Hahah.

Kathie Avatar

Love it and it would look really pretty on my brown skin but it’s in out of stock online since they added it to the permanant collection tempararily. What’s up with that? I guess it’s very popular. I’ll check my SF Pro store and have them ship it to me I guess.

I have worn Violetta with simple black liner and a mattified face (NC35) and I LOVE IT – it is my summer alternative to red lips and I got compliments wherever I went. I love this color!!!

Dusty Avatar

i love this lipstick so much. lol! violetta and show orchid and magenta lip liner are probably my favorite mac lip colors! to me violetta is like show orchid’s bitchy sister. haha!

Lana A Avatar

I’d get it if I had perfectly (perfectly!!!) white teeth and a really (really!!!)dark skin. Kind of unwearable for daytime, could be great for a night out.

JayJay Avatar

Yes! Another one of my faves!

I’ve told people this before, but the colour of this reminds me of the colour my mood lipstick would turn (I was 12, btw). That colour was great for my skintone, as is this one, and they both looked bright and vibrant, without looking weird.

marielouise Avatar

So vibrant and amazing! Love this colour! I will wear it w/ ‘Nightmoth’, ‘Beet’ and ‘Currant’ lipliners. πŸ™‚ Occasionally, w/ a dash of ‘Rags to Riches’ Dzglass.

This color seems hard to pull off…I don’t think I could wear at work, I’m afraid someone might complain to HR! There are some really picky people at my work!

Violet, violet, violet!!! Oh finally something violet! I hate scarlet lipsticks, I found them so kitsch. I hate pink lipsticks, I think you can wear them only till you’re 12. Then I search for violet and… no violet around, or better, not a decent violet, but just some lilac. My favourite is still Hysteria by Chanel, that’s a real violet! However, even if it is a bit too light for my tastes, this is a very interesting colour ^^

I love it ! I have it too. I already got to wear it alone and got good comments on it. But for those that are affraid of it, you can tone it down by putting a coat of another color on top. I tried with MAC London Life on top and liked the results πŸ™‚

I ‘m LOVING “Violetta”! I’m sorry to blab this much about it but so many people are “leaving it”…!?

It looks somewhat more extreme in pics & in the tube than when it’s applied – don’t let that deceive you! You can easily raise, lower or alter the drama & glam factors, I’ve found. While I wouldn’t wear it full-on except for a night out, etc., if you dab it on, blot, & repeat, it looks like the best-quality lip stain I’ve ever used. It’s like wine-stained lips but way better (and it lasts!) If you do the same thing but top with the right gloss, it’s really spectacular, especially using a lipgloss with some reflective and/or iridescent glitter. Of course, it’s not really for daytime, I guess (unless you work in fashion, art, etc.).

Purple lip colors work really well on me, as long as they aren’t too red (looks like I walked into a door, lips-first). But if you’re pale with a cool undertone (or pale & cool with just a hint of yellow, like me), the right purple/lavender/violet or cool lilac can really make your your complexion & eyes light up! Worn with some cool-toned or plummy pinks, it can be unbelievably flattering! “Up the Amp” is a softer & more “reasonable” shade of violet/purple – I use it in the daytime or at night – but “Violetta” is gorgeous, handled right (& on my complexion, anyway!).

Thanks for featuring it!

I know I am kind of late here but just in case anyone is still looking for this answer. Wet n Wild’s “Fuchsia with Blue Pearl” is extremely similar in color and only cost $1.99 USD or less.

I love this color. When I first saw swatches I didn’t think anything of it but when I saw your FOTD with romping e/s I fell in love! I am getting it in the mail tomorrow and cannot wait to wear it!

Sheryl Avatar

That’s so pretty!! I’ve been wanting this lipstick for a while now. Unfortunately, my pro store (which is the only pro store in my area) is always out of it. =(

sf Avatar

so i finally got this in the mail and its gorgeous! The pics do not do it justice, in fact it looks too bright and blue toned in pics. Its just a lovely orchid shade, one swipe is quite wearable, I LOVE IT. And I agree, the stain it leaves behind with some gloss on top gives your lips a nice, sexy, bitten look. I could never live w/o this now that I have it

allison Avatar

Waiting for this one right now! Love how it looks. It took some convincing for me to get it…had to see how it would look on a WOC, but after I found some FOTD and saw you look with Romping…I was sold. I also loved the recommendation by one of the other posters to wear it with Current liner…I have that liner!!!!! (faints and dies)

allison Avatar

Got it on Saturday and I LOVE it!!!!!

I used Current liner, Violetta and put Quick Tease l/g over top of it…gorgous. I dont see any problem with wearing this everyday….I am darker (NW43) in the Summer, but it seems like something that I could (and would) wear everyday.

Thanks for adding this one…or else I would have never even been tempted to get it! πŸ˜€

Hinahon Avatar

Those days, i’ve been wearing it a lot with just MAC Funtabulous dazzleglass on top, it looks gorgeous and to me, not that crazy, you should try it ^^

THIS COLOR IS SEXXXXXXXXXXY!!!! obviously people wth papercut thin lips wont like any color like red, pink, orange, purple, violet etc!!! it confuses me why many people are willing to wear bright pink shirts or really tiny skirts but a purple lipstick is too much? thats dumb
I seen soo many youtube gurus wear this and they look gorgeous!!!! its a hot look!! I can see a Kim kardashian wearing this! I get compliments daily, this is indeed a compliment type of lipstick!! its hot! for all u gals clinging on to your 99 cent bonne belle clear lipgloss are missing out!!! THIS IS BEAUTIFUL! a color to die for! I reccomend.

So, how necessary is this shade to my collection? I missed it from Venomous Villains, but I live by a PRO store so I can get it if I want. I love out there lip colors.

Alyssa Avatar

Christine, I have used UD cosmetics pretty much exclusively since they first started up in the 90’s but since I discovered your site I have been branching out and trying other brands(finally) and I am really in love with alot of the Mac lipsticks especially since urban decay kind of lacks in that area. But, the way mac releases their products is kind of a mystery to me. I have a question about the Mac violetta which I love love love! I was told by a sales girl in a Mac store in manhattan (times square) that the color I was looking for ( show orchid) was limited and currently unavailable, she recommended Violetta which could be found at the PRO shop down town which I never got to that day. I went on to Mac’s site and found show orchid with out a problem but, when I searched for violetta it comes up “no results found” Is this because it is a PRO color? Can PRO colors be found on the Mac website for purchase or only at the PRO stores? I have been looking all over your site and am getting the drift that there are alot of limited edition colors with MAC, do they get re- released ever? I was lucky enough to find violetta on amazon and it looks FANTASTIC on goes great with my skin tone but it cost me alot. I want more of it. Sorry this is so long winded, I am just and old makeup junkie but a MAC newbie and not familiar with their releases and availability THANKS!

Rocio Avatar

Hey Christine! Do you think this lipstick would look good on my NC40 skin tone? I love a loud lipstick but I have doubts on this one. Thanks!!
