Tarte Bon Voyage Collector's Set Review, Photos, Swatches
Tarte Bon Voyage Collector’s Set
Tarte Bon Voyage Collector’s Set ($59.00 for 2.05 oz.) includes a 20-pan eyeshadow palette, plus a deluxe sized mascara, cheek stain, Maracuja Oil, Smooth Operator finishing powder, and a LipSurgence Lip Gloss and Lip Tint, which are all housed in a zippered travel bag. Overall, it’s a decent palette. There were a couple of misses for eyeshadows, but I actually found that the lip/cheek products were more problematic, as they lacked staying power and the lip products weren’t hydrating for me. I think if you like more muted eyeshadows with more matte finishes, this might be a good palette to consider. Just for reference, this review only covers the eyeshadows, cheek and lip products (color cosmetics).
Palace of Versaille is a light pink with subtle warm undertones and a matte finish. It had good color payoff, soft texture that was only a smidgen powdery, and wore well for eight hours. See swatches of all dupes / view dupes side-by-side.
Moulin Rouge is a plummy taupe with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. The pigmentation was good, while it wore well for eight hours before fading and had a soft texture that was blendable. See swatches of all dupes / view dupes side-by-side.
I Think I Cannes is a muted, medium-dark purple-plum with a hint of gray and a matte finish. It was slightly powdery but had fairly good pigmentation and was blendable on the skin. It lasted for eight hours applied. See swatches of all dupes / view dupes side-by-side.
My Own Cotes de Rhone is a dark, cool-toned, muted purple with a matte finish. It had so-so color payoff, as the texture was slightly powdery, but it wore well for eight hours. See swatches of all dupes / view dupes side-by-side.
Boudoir Noir is a dark burgundy-brown with warm, reddish undertones and a semi-matte finish. It had really rough, uneven color coverage with a drier, slightly powdery, texture that made it hard to blend on the skin. What made it on lasted for eight hours, at least. See swatches of all dupes / view dupes side-by-side.
Fall in Louvre is a softened, peach-orange with a satin finish. It had good pigmentation, and the texture was soft without being powdery. The color lasted for eight hours before fading. See swatches of all dupes / view dupes side-by-side.
Provence Upon a Time is a dark, brown-ish gold with a frosted finish. It had nice color payoff, and the texture was soft and blendable. It wore well for eight hours. See swatches of all dupes / view dupes side-by-side.
Eiffel for You is a muted, medium-dark olive brown with warm undertones and a mostly matte finish. It had so-so pigmentation, and the texture was slightly powdery. See swatches of all dupes / view dupes side-by-side.
Too Haute to Handle is a medium-dark, bronze-shimmered brown with warm, yellow undertones. It had a thin, but smooth, consistency that went on with mostly opaque color coverage that lasted for eight hours. See swatches of all dupes / view dupes side-by-side.
Bastille in the Night is a dark brown with subtle, warm yellow undertones and a satiny finish. It had excellent pigmentation that on smoothly and evenly. I didn’t notice any fading until after eight and a half hours of wear. See swatches of all dupes / view dupes side-by-side.
Chantilly Lace is a light, warm-toned beige with a satin finish. It had great color payoff, and the texture was soft and only a smidgen powdery, while the color stayed on well for eight hours. See swatches of all dupes / view dupes side-by-side.
Merci You Later is a muted, medium-dark taupe brown with warm undertones and a matte finish. It had good pigmentation, though it was slightly powdery. It wore well for eight hours before fading. See swatches of all dupes / view dupes side-by-side.
No Champagne, No Gain is a muted, medium gold with hints of brown and a metallic sheen. It had nice color payoff, and it went on smoothly and evenly. I didn’t see signs of fading until after eight hours of wear. See swatches of all dupes / view dupes side-by-side.
Take on Bordeaux is a dark, chocolate brown with warm, red-yellow undertones and a satin finish. It had good color payoff that went on fairly smoothly. It wasn’t powdery, but it was still blendable, and this shade stayed on well for eight hours. See swatches of all dupes / view dupes side-by-side.
French Riviera is a muted, dirty green with subtle, cool undertones and a soft, frosted finish. It had good pigmentation, and the texture was a soft and blendable. The color lasted for eight hours on me. See swatches of all dupes / view dupes side-by-side.
C’est La Vie is a sparkly, metallic golden pewter. It had sheer color coverage, while the texture was crumbly and resulted in a fair amount of fall out during wear. See swatches of all dupes / view dupes side-by-side.
Marseille the Word is a muted, medium-dark pewter-gray with a pearly sheen. It had so-so color payoff, and the texture was soft without being powdery. It wore well for seven and a half hours. See swatches of all dupes / view dupes side-by-side.
Play Nice is a muted, gray-ish purple with a semi-matte finish. It had good pigmentation, and the texture was only a smidgen powdery, but it could have been more blendable. This shade lasted for eight hours on me. See swatches of all dupes / view dupes side-by-side.
On a Good Notre Dame is a deep, dark black with a semi-matte finish. It had fairly good color payoff, and while it wasn’t powdery, it could have been easier to blend on the skin. See swatches of all dupes / view dupes side-by-side.
Le Cordon Bleu is a cool-toned, bluish purple with a matte finish. It was somewhat powdery and harder to blend on the skin, though it lasted for eight hours once on. The color payoff was decent but needed to be built up. See swatches of all dupes / view dupes side-by-side.
Muse is a beige-brown with subtle, warm undertones and a metallic sheen. Tarte’s Cheek Stain formula is described long-wearing and natural. It is mostly a sheer sheen on me with little color, and it lasts five and a half hours on me (not long-wearing at all). See swatches of all dupes / view dupes side-by-side.
Visionary is a soft, medium peach-coral with warm undertones and a fine shimmer. Tarte’s LipSurgence Lipgloss formula is supposed to give a “pop of color” with “lasting shine” while being hydrating and vanilla-scented. It had semi-sheer color coverage that added warmth and glossiness to the lips. It lasted for two hours and was neither hydrating nor drying. See swatches of all dupes / view dupes side-by-side.
Romantic is a soft, muted coral-pink with a glossy shine. Tarte’s LipSurgence Lip Tint formula is supposed to be a hydrating, natural-looking lip stain with a “wash of color.” It had semi-opaque color coverage that went on evenly and smoothly. I didn’t find it hydrating, though, and it lasted two and a half hours on me. See swatches of all dupes / view dupes side-by-side.

I really love the mix of colors in the palette. I’m really pale, so I actually don’t mind the shadows to be on the muted or sheer side (my experience with Tarte is that they are exactly that, and I have liked their shadows in the past), as long as they still apply evenly. Since you only mentioned four to be hard to blend, would you say that on the whole, the shadows apply evenly and are blendable? If the biggest problem is that they’re just sheer, that’s actually a turn-on for me. But if they require extra work to not be patchy, then I would pass.
I think you’d like it, Ginny! Some of the mattes are just on the powdery side, but the majority (except the ones noted) were blendable and buildable on the lid (if desired)!
I think I will go for it. Thanks for your help!!
Ooooo! I don’t normally buy the tarte holiday sets (too repetitive) but I love this one.
Yayyy!
Hi Christine!
Thanks for the review, as always, so helpful! 🙂 I have (yes, another.. I know!) question for you… I love eyeshadow palettes, and I love to collect them. This year, I hesistate between 3 palettes : this Tarte one, the Lorac Mega Pro Palette and the Too Faced Everything Nice palette. Which one would be the best, according to you, for a palette hoarder like me 😀 ?
Too Faced Everything Nice seems better to me, but I think the Tarte one might be more unique (it seemed to have less dupes on some shades). Mega Pro is too much work to obtain.
Thank you for the infos, I think my mind is pretty much set on the Tarte one 🙂 !
Loving the name “Eiffel for You” (plus many of the others)! These are really pretty shades.
It is a cute name!
Kinda disappointing for me…but on the bright side I like the bag it comes in. Did the Cheek Stain feel kinda cooling to you Christine? It felt a little cooling to me when I swatched it in stores today…and I swatched one of the permanent shades to see if it was just because I haven’t used or swatched their cheek stains in a while, but no cool feeling
It didn’t! I applied using a stippling brush but didn’t notice anything.
It felt cool to me, too! I actually like it, though…
The colors look pretty nice. I’m glad Tarte didn’t overpass overload this palette with shimmery shades. It’s nice to see so many mattes/satins in one palette
It is always nice to have more of a balance!
It’s a nice palette but when I think holiday sets, I like wow factors because lot of the time they are LE! This seems too dupeable for me plus, again, when I think holiday I think neutrals with a little pow and oodles of jewel tones. Normally I’m a neutral lover but I’ll have to pass.
I’m sure something else will catch your eye 😉
This looks INCREDIBLE. And the bag is cute as heck.
Do you think you’ll add this to your wish list, Kelsey?
Absolutely. I have a serious obsession with neutral palettes. This will be living on my Christmas wishlist for my friends and family.
You know, I really want to love this set and be all over it. I love purple and gold. I love makeup bags, i love sheer coral lip products. I love gold eyeshadows and I really want a navy blue shadow.
Sonehow, though, it turns into more of a ‘meh’… There are too many matte neutrals in the palette (for me personally) and I prefer my lip products to be hydrating and a tiny bit longer lasting!
LOL, it saves my wallet, but *grumblegrumblegrumble* 😉
Go figure! So many pros yet doesn’t resonate. I feel that way about most Tarte eyeshadows, but I have figured out why – they’re just all soft/muted in actual color (not necessarily bad, just not my taste).
Though I am pretty sure they are not the same, The large Tarte Palettes are beginning to overlap to my eyes! The same neutral theme!!
I could see how that would happen!
I agree! As someone with around 10 “different” tarte palettes, I’ve skipped buying any for the last couple of years. However, this one just seemed to call to me!
Lovely set, for the most part. Cordon Bleu, though — it seems nobody gets these dark purply-navy shades right. They’re always patchy. The blue pigment in these shades and super-bright blues must be a pain in regards to texture.
Something about the pigment must make it harder to get right 🙁
That’s a terrific value for all of those products, along with the pretty travel makeup bag. In the palette I like the top and bottom rows the most, though seemed to get the bulk of the lower grades 🙁 I do like the muted colors, and matte/satin/pearl/low shimmer shades as long as they’re smooth, not patchy, and easy to blend. They’re nice for a more understated look. As I’ve gotten older, I find they tend look more flattering on me. At first glance the top row reminds me of a few of the shades in the Tarte Be MATTEnificent Palette that I passed on.
I do wish the lip colors had more pink in them, as that would make it a no-brainer for me. I may get it for the palette and give the extra goodies to others who would enjoy them.
Anyway, the set would make a very nice gift for most any makeup lover who normally uses products below the “luxury end”range.
Do you think you’ll cave on this, Pami? It sounds like you’d like it (even though the lip colors aren’t as pink).
Pam, it sounds like you’d really enjoy the MATTEnificant palette! I have it, and the colors are definitely more “pink” than this.
Libratine, now I wish I could pick it up, but it’s discontinued. Thanks for your comment! 🙂
Oh, I’m sorry Pami. :(. Given the way they repeat colors, the same shades will probably be available again. 🙂
Just popping in to say how amazing that Romantic Lip Insurance looks on you, Christine! So flattering! If Le Cordon Bleu was a better-scoring shade I’d be all over that color.
Silly autocorrect. LipSurgence*
Aw, thanks Celia! 🙂
i keep trying to tell myself i don’t need this but… i want! it’s so pretty. the only thing is i wouldn’t use the cheek stain and the lip colors aren’t my typical colors, and if i’m buying a set i want to be able to use everything :\ i dunno, i’m torn.
Do you have a friend/family member that might enjoy the extras? Maybe as a gift! 🙂
I don’t really like this palette as too many of the colours are very similar to each other and to other palettes. It is too warm for me. Now a nice palette of greys, blues and greens would have me very interested.
Aww, maybe next year 🙂
Usually not into Tarte, but I grabbed this loot bag because of the eyeshadow palette. I very much prefer the shade range here over the Lorac mega pro (the duplicate colours with matte and shimmer finish rather turned me off for some reason.. and while it worked in the past for me with the smaller Lorac Pro palettes, in the larger format, it just feels a bit thoughtless and just doesn’t inspire). I really like the top and bottom rows on this Tarte palette and can see myself wearing some of the third. The second row is just a shrug, but it’s very common territory.
I can see what you mean about Mega Pro! I don’t know that I personally like the matte/shimmer of the same shade in the Pro palettes!
That’s the exact same thing I thought about this palette. Have you used it yet? I’d love to hear your thoughts too since I’m really on the fence.
I got the Tarte Rainforest After Dark Palette when it came out, and I like the eye shadows a lot, especially using the first three together. I was worried that the palette may be too warm, but it’s pretty workable.
I have a question, sorry it has to be this post!
When a cheek product doesn’t wear very long (like a couple hours), where does it go? Is it usually absorbed by your skin? Rubbed off by your hand or clothes? Blown away by the wind? My friend asked me this one day and I have been thinking about it every time I read about blush! Is it our face oils that break the pigment down or something?
My guess is that natural oils on your face break down the makeup over time.
Yo, thanks Christine!
That lipsurgence tint shade is everything! Love the mix of colours in the palette – I need this on top of the LORAC palette!
So glad you’re digging this set, Stephanie!
Looks like a beautiful neutral palette! Do you think the eye shadows are pigmented enough to show up on medium to dark skin? They are so pretty…
Yes, I think so!
Thats a neat set, I actually like the lip products as well! The metallics in the palette seem to have the best color pay off!
Woohoo! 🙂 Yes, mattes (in general) are harder to get right without some sort of primer.
idk why but the formulation of tarte just doesn’t go well with my skin . . . it tends to go patchy on me, regardless of what primer I use. A pity because these colors are gorgeous.
That sucks, Verily! 🙁
I’m not usually a tarte kind of girl but I’m really digging this mostly matte palette.
Do you think you’ll try it?
I love the eyeshadow names 🙂 and the bag is kinda cute too.. but that’s really not enough so this will be a pass for me still. Yay.. extra $ for other things!!
They are cute names!
Why is it so hard for a holiday eye shadow palette to get at a 9/10?? I feel like so far nothing is as good as I was hoping for it to be. I’ll still get something but now I’m torn because all of them seem to be on a similar level to each other.
I will say that by breaking out everything shade by shade, it makes it harder to get into the A-range. Often, the more products, the more likely you are to have a few misses, and they do bring down the overall score.
That is true 🙁 What do you think is the best eyeshadow holiday palette so far then? I really do want to buy one because I think some of them are really pretty but nothing seems to be really on top so I’m pretty torn.
Nothing really stands out to me yet… 🙁
I’m not a fan of Tarte’s shadows but these look so good and the packaging is so beautiful it hurts my soul just by staring at it *sigh* but now that I found the Dream Come Hue set I realized I don’t need more eyeshadows. Anyway, that LipSurgance lip tint looks very pretty on you Christine.
Thank you, Yackiie! 🙂
ohhhh my, i think this might be (almost) everything i’ve wanted in a neutral palette! i’ve never tried anything by tarte, but i’m definitely interested!!
Ooh, very tempting then!
The cheek stain is what sold me on this set, and I’m loving the shadows, too! I thought the lip products would end up in my daughter’s stash, but I kind of like those, too.
As a 40+ mom, I need a stash of more understated shadows for certain occasions. I can’t imagine pulling out NARS Rated R/Caravaggio, or UD Electric for a P.T.A. meeting, LOL!
What are some of your favorite combos?
Great job with the photos and review !That lipstick/gloss looks really nice on you
Thanks, Katherine!
I really want this!! But sadly I cant even get it. I live in Sweden and we do have Sephora, but it’s nothing like in the states! The only new brands we got was Nars and Benefit, and I could already order that cheaper online. And what bugs me the most is that countries without Sephora have really good deals on shipping! Shouldn’t it be the other way around!? Sorry about the moaning.. But I really want some Tarte goodies! 😉
Aww, I wish Tarte was carried in your area, Isabella!
I’ve never tried anything from Tarte. I would like to try this, as I like quite a few of the eyeshadows, the bag is sort of made for me, how could Tarte know? 🙂
The extras, lipstick, gloss and so on seems to be at least OK.
I don’t think I’ll get it, must investigate where I could order it from, and then, if it’s outsid the EU theres the risk if customs, something that’s never nice to have to pay.
The bag is so big, too!
I’m kinda digging it, although I dont think I’ll plunge! the lip crayon looks great on you even though looks like you’re straining to smile about it lol!
Thank you 🙂
Lovely shadows.
Glad ya liked ’em!
A few of these shades are really beautiful and one or two seem unique (though I’ll be checking out the dupes just in case). At first, I thought I wouldn’t want this but now I’m vacillating!
There are a few more unique shades in it, I think! I definitely found that some had only 2-5 (which is quite low).
Man, I love those lip products on you and I’ve been thinking of trying more corals, but I JUST bought a Tarte palette, darn it!
Thank you, Kirsten!
Do you Know when this will be released, Christine? 🙂
It’s already available!
Aww, it must be sold out, then; it’s not on the Tarte site, but I did find it for sale on Amazon–for $83. Boo.
It’s a Sephora exclusive – it is linked as the first thing in the post and under “where to buy” to Sephora 🙂
XD. In this case, all my brain registered was “makeup, makeup, pretty MAKEUP!”, lol. I clicked on the “where to buy” button instead.
I just bought one from sephora, ;).
Yay! Glad you were able to find it 😀
Crap. I like this a lot more than I had expected :-O The eyeshadow colors look great, but I think what drew me over the line is the lip tint. Want!
Uh oh!
Wow! This palette has a lot of shades that I’ve been meaning to get! 50 bucks! I think this is going to be one hard to get palette! Absolute perfection!
I know it is available online still 🙂
I went to swatch it in store and all the colors were very nice but most looks very “gray” on me. There was one shade that was unreal sparkly. It was the most gorgeous, most luxuriously sparkly shade I’ve ever seen! But the rest – I need to see how I would use the shades before I commit to $60 because there are a lot of cheaper palettes and I don’t need any of the add-ons like the lipgloss and the oil.
I am not sure about this palette, somehow I feel like all the Tarte palettes are way too similar, I bought last years for that gorgeous navy color, but overall they seem to not ever have any vibrant colors in their palettes. I remember the old Tarte, before the change and they had some of the most gorgeous vibrant colors I had ever seen, but now pulling out all of the ones I have collected since then, I feel like its the same over and over, so I may skip this one.
This set is amazing! The eyeshadows are a great mix of colors, and the lip products look so great! Thanks for sharing! I’ll definitely look into this 🙂
I liked this more than I thought I would. A few more warm shades than I would like but I’m still not sure if I would buy it. It’s a quandary.
is the first row as heavenly soft as the Be Mattenificent palette? Still sad about missing that one 🙁 Seems like this one has the same shades though!
Yes, similarly in softness!
Love this set! And your skin looks great in these pictures, gorgeous!
