The Greatest Gift

Sydney Grace The Greatest Gift Pressed Pigment Shadow ($6.00 for 0.06 oz.) has a soft, pinky-mauve base with gold-to-green shifting shimmer. It had semi-opaque, buildable pigmentation with a smooth, lightly emollient texture that was blendable along the edges without being too thick or too dense in the pan. It stayed on nicely for eight and a half hours before fading slightly on me.

Formula Overview

$6.00/0.06 oz. - $100.00 Per Ounce

The shimmer eyeshadows are more consistent in pigmentation with the majority of shades having opaque color coverage. The more metallic/sparkly the shade is, the creamier and more emollient the eyeshadow felt in the pan, which often yielded really smooth application and good adherence to the lid, though a few worked better with a fingertip or a dampened brush for true-to-pan color or to get a truer finish/sheen.

Most shades, however, worked well with brushes, and I didn't have trouble applying or blending out most of the shimmer shades. The more satin to pearl like finishes tend to feel a little thinner but blend out well. These shades wore between eight and nine hours on me with some of the more foiled-like shades creasing noticeably at the end (and the less foiled-like ones fading).

Tattle Tale

Sydney Grace Tattle Tale Pressed Pigment Shadow ($6.00 for 0.06 oz.) is a medium-dark plum with warm undertones and a metallic sheen. The consistency was quite soft, which made it easy to over-apply and have some fallout, so I recommend using a lighter hand with this shade or a dampened brush to ensure a smooth, even, fallout-free application. It had opaque color payoff that applied evenly and blended out nicely along the edges. It lasted well for eight and a half hours on me before creasing slightly.

Lucky Peach

Sydney Grace Lucky Peach Pressed Pigment Shadow ($6.00 for 0.06 oz.) is a medium pink with warm undertones and a frosted, golden sheen. It had good color coverage with a smooth, lightly creamy texture that felt a little more emollient than ideal, as I felt that made it harder to get opaque coverage without using my fingertip or a dampened brush. The eyeshadow went on evenly and blended out easily along the edges. It wore well for eight hours on me before creasing faintly.

Unpredictable

Sydney Grace Unpredictable Matte Shadow ($5.00 for 0.06 oz.) is a soft mauve with subtle, cool undertones and a mostly matte finish. It had semi-opaque color coverage with a slightly thinner, drier texture that made it harder to apply evenly and build up. I had the best experience using it to diffuse deeper matte shades but was less enamored with it as a lid shade due to the texture. It lasted nicely for seven and a half hours on me before I noticed signs of fading.

FURTHER READING: Formula Overview for details on general performance and characteristics (like scent).

Formula Overview

$5.25/0.06 oz. - $87.50 Per Ounce

The matte eyeshadows tend to be pigmented (typically semi-opaque or opaque, often buildable if they aren't opaque) with a soft, more velvety texture that has slight slip but isn't so thick that it gets difficult to use, applies unevenly, or has a lot of fallout. I've found that most of the matte eyeshadows apply and blend out without much effort but a few may take a bit more effort to diffuse along the edges. The matte formula tends to wear between eight and eight and a half hours on me.

Red Mist

Sydney Grace Red Mist Pressed Pigment Shadow ($6.00 for 0.06 oz.) has a pale, cool-toned beige base with pink-to-lavender shifting pearl. It had more of a satin-to-pearl finish–shiny but smooth, not overtly shimmery. The texture felt soft, slightly more powder-like compared to most of the brand’s shimmer shades, but it wasn’t chalky or prone to fallout. It had nearly opaque pigmentation that lasted well for eight hours on me.

Got compliments on a SG simple green look tonight. This mauve look is really special, and easy to wear. SG shadows are so easy and pleasurable/pleasant to use. No finicky, no finesse, no patchy, no blend-away. It impresses me that colors difficult to formulate are often done well by this brand. Has anyone tried a blush/HL?

Esther Avatar

Hey Christine,

I really want to make an order, but I’m a bit scared cause shipping is expensive from Canada and I’m afraid I might not like them (I kinda only really like natasha denona and Mac mattes and veluxe pearl formula- cause I hate powdery shadows and micro glitters and have sensitive eyes). But the colours look so pretty! I read your formula overview, and it sounds wonderful, but other reviewers on youtube have said that the mattes are very powdery.

Are they powdery In your opinion?

I loved the colour story of the Huda “new nude” but I hate the glitters and the concealer – so I kinda wanted to buy some of the pinks and purples to make a dupe palette.

How would you compare the formula to Natasha denona and mac?

Christine Avatar

MAC’s formula is very hard, firm, and thin – if you prefer that, then you wouldn’t like Sydney Grace, which is definitely softer but also more substantial, thicker in a way, and more pigmented (on average). Natasha Denona’s mattes are all over the map – some are firmer, some are soft, some are thin and some are more substantial so it’s hard to say (it also depends on what time period, since the formula has gone through some changes over time!). I consider formulas like LORAC eyeshadows to be powdery, for reference. Like I wouldn’t put ND’s matte eyeshadows and MAC’s in the same category – they’re very different to me, so that’s why I’m struggling so much to be of any help to you šŸ™ I’m sorry!

Overall, I haven’t experienced much in the way of fallout myself (on average), but because they’re pretty pigmented, if you’re heavy-handed or use larger/fluffier brushes, I could see it being more of an issue!

Esther Avatar

Ohhh sorry, I keep forgetting that Natasha reformulates every palette release! I only have the newer palettes (the gold, the safari and the re-release sunset- my boyfriend fulfilled my Christmas wish list lol) and I like that the matte formulas in those are substantial and not powdery. I decluttered my Lorac pro, and skipped out on every abh palette cause of the powderiness!

I like that mac’s mattes are on the firmer side, but I don’t need them to be that firm. However, The most powdery I really would go would be like the mattes in the safari palette or the gold- where they have that thicker binder (so they don’t get crazy powdery even if there is some kick-up).

Sorry for being unclear. Also I gave away my melt stack cause I didn’t like how powdery someof the lighter mattes in that palette got.

Thank you for your help!! I really appreciate your reviews, we all do
