Stila Mint Julep, Cobalt, Ultramarine Smudge Stick Eyeliners Reviews, Photos, Swatches
Stila Mint Julep Smudge Stick Eyeliner
Stila Smudge Stick Eyeliner ($20.00 for 0.01 oz.) is touted as a richly pigmented, long-wearing, waterproof eyeliner. It’s a formula I really like for its creamy, glide-on consistency that doesn’t tug or pull at the lash line, diverse shade range, and generally good wear. Some shades are more pigmented than others, though, as you’ll note below. I actually bought several more shades during their most recent sale after trying some of their recently released shades, so you’ll see more reviews over the next couple of months as I work my way through them (I went overboard).
Stila Mint Julep Smudge Stick Eyeliner ($20.00 for 0.01 oz.) is described as a “mint green.” It’s a light, pastel green with subtle warm undertones and a matte finish. It had semi-opaque color coverage in a single stroke, and it was buildable to mostly opaque color in a few layers. It wore well for eight hours before thinning. NARS Barrow Street (P, $24.00) is slightly darker. See comparison swatches / view dupes.
Stila Cobalt Smudge Stick Eyeliner ($20.00 for 0.01 oz.) is described as a “deep teal blue.” It’s a medium blue with a matte finish (I really don’t see the teal in this at all). It had good color payoff in one pass, and it was buildable to full opacity in two passes. This shade wore well for eight and a half hours on me. Tarina Tarantino Glamorous Thief (P, $15.00) is very shimmery, darker. Urban Decay Radium (P, $19.00) is more shimmery. MAC Hi-Def Cyan (P, $16.00) is lighter, brighter. bareMinerals 4AM (LE, $15.00) is lighter, warmer. See comparison swatches / view dupes.
Stila Ultra Marine Smudge Stick Eyeliner ($20.00 for 0.01 oz.) is described as a “shimmering navy blue.” It’s a sparkling, medium-dark blue; it still has some brightness to it, so it doesn’t look black on the lash line. It was quite sheer in one pass, and it really didn’t layer well so I could never achieve full opaque color. It started to fade and thin after seven and a half hours. NARS Most Wanted (LE, $24.00) is less shimmery, brighter. Buxom Pick Me Up (P, $17.00) is darker. Laura Mercier Cobalt (P, $24.00) is less shimmery. Sephora Collection My Boyfriend’s Jeans (P, $9.00) is brighter. MAC Blue Stripe (LE, $16.00) is darker. Make Up For Ever #3L (P, $19.00) is darker. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Okay.. I think the cobalt pencil should be called cyan. I’m a bit freaky nuts for anything cobalt, but this screams cyan (more yellow in it) to me. Hmpf 😉
It’s not at all cobalt, IMO! I was sad 🙁
Heh, this was actually the first thing I thought when I saw it too! 😀 I was also kind of disappointed, LOL.
I wish that Ultramarine had come up better 🙁 That would have been a shade I would have gotten in a heartbeat!
Xsparkage got me hooked on Mint Julep a few months ago. It’s a nice alternative to white.
Right? She looks great in it!!
Waiting for you to review more shades as the first two wont show up on my skin (NC37/NC40) and third one has shimmer which I cant wear with contacts!
Hopefully one of the other ones will work!
These are such fun colors! The minty one is so cute! I have no idea where to wear it but its too pretty and I want it! 😛
It’s a nice way to brighten up the waterline!
I love the mint but I honestly have no idea how to wear colored eyeliners! I have soooo many eyeshadows, lipsticks, blushes but not a single colored eyeliner.
I love them on the lower lash line! 🙂
I am a sucker for mint liners. 😀 I received a free Dolce & Gabbana mint one from Sephora, and it’s beautiful. I’ve been wondering about this Stila one for awhile. Thanks for the review! 😀
No problem, Lotus! xo
ooo I want the first two.
They’re so fun!
I love the mint shade so cute!
It is!
That mint green….I kind of need that. But I have absolutely no idea how you’d wear a shade like that?
I like it on the lower lash line to brighten!
Can I just say…. I wore the smudge stick in “turquoise” (also an amazing color!!) yesterday on my top liner. I had a therapist appointment and bawwwled my eyes out. I get in the car to leave and check my makeup, it was all on, completely perfect as if I had just done it! I was amazed…!
Also love the “violet” color 🙂
YAY and aww at the same time! I hope bawling = good session, even if possibly painful/emotional!
The mint is so unique! I swatch these every time I’m in Sephora. Gorgeous.
I’m all over a mint green eyeliner, haha!
I’m loving cobalt it’s so pretty, especially since my favorite color is blue.
I love the color, though it’s not what I would think of when I hear cobalt!
I love all of them, especially Cobalt!
Yay!
Thank you for reviewing these!! There are so many shades but not so many swatches, and I don’t really have the time to go down to Sephora in order to swatch them all myself :p
No problem, Helena! 🙂
Love Mint Julep and thanks for the swatches, Christine!
My pleasure, Jammies! xo
The Stila Smudge Stick eyeliners are a new favorite. I agree that the coverage and pigmentation varies. I am disappointed that the Ultramarine isn’t as good. It’s one that I was thinking of getting for something fun for the summer.
It’s a shame that the pigmentation is so varied!
I’ve seen Queen of Blending using the yellow, mint, and another green of these. They look really good.
Between QoB and xSparkage, I had to have…
pretty colors !
Agreed!
I know this sounds weird but when I saw the mint julep, all I could think of was chopping it up and putting it in ice cream, it looks delicious but I’m not sure how it would look on my eyes.
Think I’ll go lie down now; things have obviously hit rock bottom when I want to eat eyeliner….
Haha! 😉
Mint Julep is gorgeous! Its hard to get such shades right!
It is!
Pretty! Colors after my heart…and I’ve never tried these!
Can’t wait to see more. Did you get that orange? I was eyeing that one…unusual…
I think I have it in my most recent purchase!
I hate doing the value for money math on these, because the result is not pretty, but I absolutely love the formula. I’m very happy to see that they’ve expanded the colour range so much. I completely see why you would want to go nuts ordering!
I hear you – it’s one of those things you don’t want to know at all!
Each single one of these I have, stopped twisting up after a couple of uses. 🙁
I haven’t had that problem with the ones I’ve used more often, but if it happens, you can bet I’ll mention.
It happened with every single one I bought over the years. With two, they never worked and I was able to return them. The others worked fine a few times and then stopped. It just happened to the yellow one, which is a bummer because I really like it.
Aw, I’m really disappointed you didn’t include any photos of you wearing these eyeliners! I’d have loved to see how you would incorporate the Mint Julep into a look!
Sorry about that – I kind of wear them as I test other things, so they’re all over the place. I’m trying to keep them more organized, but it’s a work in progress. The problem is that I’m usually testing eyeshadows that aren’t particularly blended or worn in any complementary fashion – purely testing for wear so I don’t photograph those things.
I was expecting Cobalt to be a lot darker lol. It’s so very pretty though!
Me too!
That light mint is definitely interesting… wonder if it’d work well on the waterline as a pop of color that also brightens
It works marvelously on the water line to brighten.
The teal in the Cobalt color shows up on my skin quite well. Any blue that has a touch of green to it, Peace or Gonzo from Urban Decay both look quite green against my skin. I tend to stay away from those colors because of how they change on me.
Wow! I can’t believe Peace looks green on you!
Mint!! So unique for an eyeliner that’s a must have! I love it in nail polish too 🙂
I love all things mint, haha!
I feel like you could pull off a 60s inspired eye look with the mint, Like Joan in Mad Men.
Yes! Definitely.
I wonder how the mint would look on the waterline.
It’s nice for brightening!
The mint one is gorgeous, but for some reason I have the worst luck with Stila liners. They never twist up for me 🙁
That’s so weird! I can’t recall having that issue with any I have. I think I had five or six shades from when they launched initially, and then I recently received six and those were fine!
I’m glad I’m not the only one who had this problem!
Mint Julep is a very cool shade!
Agreed!
Hi,
So are these actually good with smudging? You can’t really see in the swatches how blendable they are… More importantly, are they painful to smudge on the eyes, or do they glide?
Thanks in advance!
Yes, you can definitely smudge then if desired, but they do set within 30 seconds I would say – like they don’t just smudge all over if you don’t want them to soften a little. They aren’t painful to use!
Beautiful colors but I don’t see myself wearing these 🙁 I’m sure others can rock them though 🙂
Maybe next set will have ones more up your alley!
These smudge sticks look great! Could you please do a look with them soon? 😀
Glad ya liked ’em, Nell!
