Guerlain Les Voilettes Translucent Loose Powder Mattifying Veil Review, Photos, Swatches

Guerlain Les Voilettes Translucent Loose Powder Mattifying Veil
Guerlain Les Voilettes Translucent Loose Powder Mattifying Veil

Guerlain Les Voilettes Translucent Loose Powder Mattifying Veil ($57.00 for 0.7 oz.) is supposed to be a mattifying, translucent loose powder and comes in three shades. I tried Medium, and it was darker than the previously-released variation on this product that I have (but I don’t think I ever got around to reviewing) in Medium, which was frustrating as a long-time customer (consistency is important, especially in foundation shades!). It seems darker than their medium liquid shades (like #03s), just as a heads up, but it is a good match for Joli Teint’s Natural. I wish they had more shades available as well (there is one lighter and one darker).

The powder is very silky and finely-milled, and it sits nicely on my normal-to-dry skin without looking powdery, caked on, or unnatural. It goes on effortlessly over cream and liquid foundations, and it helps to set everything in place. It seems like my base makeup lasts about an hour longer if I use this palette, compared to not using one. The powder instantly mattifies the skin and toning down any natural luminosity that comes through, so it’s ideal for someone who wants a very matte finish, but it does darken the color of my foundation (because the Medium shade is too dark for me), so it will add color. It helps the skin look softer and smoother–pores really get de-emphasized with it on–but I think the pressed version does an even better job. The packaging is overly large–they could scale it back to make it more travel-friendly and easier to store in your drawers! I’ve also had trouble keeping it open/closed so that it doesn’t explode powder half the time I open it (I feel like it never actually closes), which isn’t an issue with the previously-released version (same packaging!). It makes getting the right amount to apply quite difficult and renders using the included powder puff unusable (which is how Guerlain says to apply it), as it leads to over-application.

since the included puff was unusable, what did you use to apply it? your skin/makeup look beautiful with this (but, then again, when doesn’t it?)

Hi Beka,

I used it several times, including for the photo you see here – but once I moved it so it wasn’t sitting upright, despite it being “closed,” all the loose powder covered it so I had to remove it from the container, wash it, and leave it outside of it.

Ohh you look so flawless! I’m surprised by the review.. Was there no seal over the holes allowing you to just expose one or two for the powder to be released upon your dictation?

There was a seal, but I had the previous formula where you can twist the container so it opens/closes the holes as you desire, so too much has never been an issue. I twist this and it never seems like it closes, so it’s constantly releasing more powder!

I see. 🙁 That doesn’t sound worth contending with when there are so many others! Is it releasing clouds of talc? That would be an ill effect & such a downer. On the plus side, it really does look great on you! Yay! 😛

When it comes to the performance of the powder itself (not the shade or the packaging), how would you compare it to the previously-released version of Les Voilettes, Christine?

I have this and love it to bits! But, yes, storing it is a major pain, so I just leave the whole thing on my make-up counter.

I’m around NC20 and use the shade Medium as well, because the lightest shade has a pink undertone. I wish Guerlain would release a broader shade range in the near future.

I worried the lighter shade would be too light for me, so it’s good to hear it is also pinker in tone! Definitely wouldn’t work!

Wait – Guerlain released something with a pink undertone?!? *gasp* 😛

OK, sarcasm aside, you look gorgeous in the pictures here, Christine! I’m sorry some of the changes have kind of made things more awkward with this product – so frustrating when that happens, especially with a luxury product like Guerlain!

On the contrary I love the glow on your face before you mattified it with this! 😛 I shy away from powders.. its really hard to find something that I can commit to.. Dim light came close!

Hey Christine!

I have very oily skin – like break through shine within an hour of applying powder – and have been using the NARs translucent crystal loose powder to set my foundation and the Urban Decay oil slick mattifying powder during the day (it’s easier to carry in my purse). Do you think this would be more effective than either of those?

I don’t think it would be! Both of those are really good. Maybe UD’s spray before you go out of the house?

I have the pressed powder version of this also in medium and I love it (I’ve never been drawn to anything powdery thats ‘loose’ – too messy). I’d buy it again for the gorgeous smell alone but the fact that it does a fantastic job of helping to make your skin look flawless makes it an essential must-have in anyones makeup collection. Just saying.

It’s similar to NARS’ in terms of texture/feel, so if that works for you in that fashion, this probably would!

I really love how it’s not a dead matte. I’m not sure I’d use it but anyone who likes a more matte look needs to buy this pronto!

I have always loved Guerlain powders on you! Just beautiful!

So does this replace the original altogether or do they still offer both? It took me forever to find a powder and that one was just heaven! It also worries me that *this Medium is darker than of the original’s. Do you think a lighter foundation will make this a better fit maybe?

I believe this replaces it – I haven’t seen both offered, just this now! It could work with a lighter foundation, but I don’t love the idea of going lighter just to make the powder work, lol!

Thanks, Christine! I knew going lighter on foundation just to accommodate a powder did seem like a long shot! ;p really risky ey?

This seems like another great powder from Guerlain! I am wondering, are you going to get the new Aquarella meteorite balls? I see they are in Europe and Singapore for Summer 2014… Any idea if/when the US will see them? Thanks!
