Mongal

Smashbox Mongal Always On Cream Eyeshadow ($22.00 for 0.34 oz.) is a medium purple with subtle, warm pink undertones and a matte finish. This shade was very prone to sheering out as the texture was very gel-like, so it was quick to spread, just didn’t leave behind an even layer of product at all.

I was able to take that semi-sheer to medium coverage and build up, but the texture of the product created pilling as it seemed to be too silicone-heavy. The result was always a patchy mess but that patchy mess lasted for seven and a half hours before creasing at least…

Formula Overview

$22.00/0.34 oz. - $64.71 Per Ounce

The formula is supposed to have "saturated color with a comfortable matte finish" that is long-wearing and won't crease. It has a thin, more velvety-cream consistency that was lightweight, spreadable, and tried down to a semi-flexible feel. It wasn't flexible in the sense that it could be continuously blended out after it had dried down, but it didn't feel as heavy or as clung-on to my lid, which I suspect was the result of the thinness of the product paired with its more powder-like finish.

The dry down was fast, so it didn't settle into my fine lines or creases as it dried down, but I felt like I had a decent amount of time to apply, blend, and diffuse the product as long as I worked one eye at a time. Once the formula dried down, it was more locked on and felt a lot drier to the touch, so I would not recommend fussing with it much once it sets as it could lead to the product lifting away.

Most shades were opaque, while some were opaque but had a tendency to sheer to more semi-opaque coverage and had to be built up in places. They tended to wear between eight and eight and a half hours before creasing a bit on me. I had higher hopes for wear, as I'm a huge fan of the brand's 24HR primer, but they definitely started to crease on me at an average-length of time (powder eyeshadows tend to last between seven and eight hours on me). If I wore them as a base, they lasted better--10 hours or so--or if I wore them more sheered out, it added a half hour to an hour of better wear.

Javelin

Smashbox Javelin Always On Cream Eyeshadow ($22.00 for 0.34 oz.) is a bright, medium blue with cool undertones and a matte finish. This shade had a longer dry down time compared to other shades, partially owing to the creamier, more emollient consistency. While it had more play time, it was almost too long as it was hard to apply the color evenly without creating patchiness if I kept working at a particular area (e.g. the edge) because it wasn’t THAT blendable either.

This would work well for a strong, opaque base color with other products layered on top and something else to soften the edge. It had opaque pigmentation that lasted for eight hours before creasing on me.

Peacemaker

Smashbox Peacemaker Always On Cream Eyeshadow ($22.00 for 0.34 oz.) is a bright, medium yellow with moderate, warm undertones and a matte finish. It had nearly opaque pigmentation in a single layer, which applied fairly evenly but the more silicone-heavy texture had some pilling if I was not careful during the initial application.

I found that using a fingertip to apply the product initially and then a more feathery brush to diffuse was the easiest way to ensure the product didn’t pill as I worked with it. This shade wore decently for eight hours before creasing.

Bloodsport

Smashbox Bloodsport Always On Cream Eyeshadow ($22.00 for 0.34 oz.) is a light, yellowy brown with strong, warm undertones and a matte finish. It had mostly opaque, buildable pigmentation in a single layer, but it was very quick to dry down, so you had to work incredibly quickly to apply, spread, and blend out the edges before it set on skin.

It was easiest to use a fingertip to lay down the color initially and then use a fluffy, synthetic brush to diffuse the edges. It stayed on well for eight hours before creasing a bit.

I read an interview with the makeup artist where she talked about Javelin and it made me want it even though I rarely reach for such bright colors – let alone bright blues – these days. I’m not sure a B with that color and those formula critiques is enough for me to justify a purchase. I still might pick up Bloodsport when they go on sale. Yellow-based products look great on me generally and I’ve definitely entered the era of “basic brown 4 lyfe”.

There are properties I’d expect to see licensed on a makeup release, and then there’s Suicide Squad. I’m kind of bummed these aren’t better, I’d love the absurdity of such an odd pairing being a super high quality product.

Thanks for explaining the reference. I have no problem with the UD or Nars sexually explicit names/themes. I loved the cover art for Splendor in the Grass, not Natalie Wood, but a beautiful, murdered woman. But i kind of draw the line at an e/s named after a Colt 45. And the extrusion pix, esp Bloodsport, in that baby _ brown, wow, skeevy. Funny that i don’t feel that way about SG creams. Also funny what turns you off.
