Smashbox Punked Photo Edit Eye Shadow Trio Review, Photos, Swatches
Punked
Smashbox Punked Photo Edit Eye Shadow Trio ($22.00 for 0.11 oz.) contains a bright silver, dark taupe, and dark black housed in a circular, plastic compact. The three shades were definitely a good color scheme together, but again, the quality of the formula used in the trio had room for improvement.

Rock Icon
Rock Icon is a bright, light silver with neutral-to-cool undertones and a sparkling, metallic finish. It had good color payoff, though it wasn’t opaque without using a dampened brush or primer with it. The texture was smooth, dense without being stiff or firm, and it blended out easily along the edges. This shade stayed on well for seven and a half hours before fading a bit.

Formula Overview
-
The formula is supposed to be "super-blendable" and "richly-pigmented." I found the quality to vary a lot from shade to shade, even with a trio, as some shades had soft, blendable texture and others were drier, dusty, and messy to work with and had pigmentation that sheered out or faded quickly. I wanted to like them more than I ended up after using them on the lid as I routinely felt like the brighter shades never looked quite as vibrant in practice as they did in the pan. Most of the shades were blendable and had coverage from medium to opaque with a few being sheer. They lasted anywhere from five to eight hours on me.

Punked
Punked is a medium, purple-leaning taupe with cool undertones and a matte finish. It had a more powdery consistency, so it was messy to use and had some fallout during application as it was a drier formula that did not adhere as well to bare skin (or primed lids) as it could have. It had semi-opaque pigmentation but was hard to build up. It lasted for seven hours on me.

Blackout
Blackout is a medium-dark black with neutral-to-warm undertones and a matte finish. It had nearly opaque pigmentation with a slightly drier, stiffer formula, but it didn’t take too much extra effort to blend out (workable for sure, particularly when applied in sheerer layers and built up). It wore well for seven and a half hours on me.

It’s unfortunate they didn’t use a better formula; I like this color combo very much.
Only thing that comes to mind is: “Meh”. If one has UD Naked 2, they can get better quality similar enough shades.
The colour combo was good, it’s a shame that the purplish/plum shade was not better as it would really rocked in this trio.
Christine, will you be reviewing “Day Rate”? I’m planning to get Night Shoot (a B+ rating is one I can live with and it seems such a practical, useful little trio) and Showmance (the less than terrific rating is one I can live with because I can get it at 20% off and use my points for the balance). Here in Canada, even Sephora doesn’t have Day Rate – I’ve no idea why – but I’m so curious to see how it scores. I so wish all of these had been better performers because they really are such a nice alternative to really large, overwhelming palettes.
I’m working my way through the trios, but since they’re subpar and readers aren’t particularly excited over them, they are lower on my list (more effort is put toward reviewing other products)… I don’t really know when. I have tested them all, but it’s not unusual that what I’ve tested exceeds what I review!
Thanks for your reply, Christine. Just “off-hand” do you recall if Day Rate was anything worth having? (not that it’s even available here for some reason).
