Pigmented Lipglosses | 2020 Editor's Favorites

As promised, next in gloss favorites is all about more pigmented glosses that I reviewed in the past year that I enjoyed! I was particularly drawn to Lisa Eldridge’s new Lipgloss formula, while Pat McGrath OpuLUST fulfilled all sparkling, metallic gloss dreams!

If you’re unfamiliar with how I like to do my year-end favorites, here’s the low down: I pull from the products I reviewed in 2020, regardless of whether they were new, limited edition, or an established range I’ve only just gotten around to reviewing. These are personal favorites, so they may or may not be the highest rated products reviewed during the year (though they will tend to be better rated, naturally!). (You can check out best of 2019 if you missed last year’s.)

Please help us streamline the comments' section and be more efficient: double-check the post above for more basic information like pricing, availability, and so on to make sure your question wasn't answered already. We appreciate enthusiasm for new releases but ask readers to please hold questions regarding if/when a review will be posted as we can't commit to or guarantee product reviews. We don't want to set expectations and then disappoint readers as even products that are swatched don't always end up being reviewed due to time constraints and changes in priorities! Thank you for understanding!

What makes you reach for a more pigmented gloss over a sheer one? Mostly either for days where my intention is to wear a gloss in lieu of an actual lipstick, or because the shade is practically the same as my lipstick, ie; PML Faux Real over She’s Heaven.

What would make you wear opaque gloss more often? I know I will once we don’t need to wear masks!

What was the most used more pigmented gloss you wore during the past year? Bobbi Brown Juicy Date, MAC Would Rather Lounge, PML Heavy Petal and Faux Real. And now that I have MAC Set Me Off….😉

I decided to try Pat McGrath lip products during the Cyber Monday sale. I bought some Lip Fetish Sheer Lip Balm, some Glitztrance lipsticks and some Opulust glosses. I am almost sad I did try these because I LOVE EVEYTHING!! Well, not really SAD, but fearful of how expensive this new found love could become, lol. I desperately want to try the Lisa Eldridge lip gloss, but they have sadly been sold out.

What makes you reach for a more pigmented gloss over a sheer one? I want more color or glitter impact.

What would make you wear opaque gloss more often? Not having to wear a mask! Seriously, I love opaque glosses…as long as they don’t bleed.

What was the most used more pigmented gloss you wore during the past year? Ciate Glitter Flips and KVD Everlasting Glimmer Veils; Too Faced Juicy Fruits Comfort Lip Glaze in Plum Crazy

Hi Christine! I’ve been visiting your site for a long time but finally decided to join. Thank you for creating such an excellent beauty resource! My skin tone is much darker than yours but I still appreciate being able to find swatches for just about anything I’m looking for! It has been very helpful.

I’ll do my best to answer…

What makes you reach for a more pigmented gloss over a sheer one?

Not really sure but just the fact that my bottom lip is two-toned in colour and sometimes I like the look of sheer gloss but sometimes not. I’m not really that into glosses anyway but I have a few and this was my first year trying Pat’s Lust AND Opulust glosses. I bought the mini OpuLust trio from Sephora and a full-sized Bronze Divinity directly from PMG.

What would make you wear opaque gloss more often? Just wanting to try something different instead of my preferred matte lipsticks. I don’t even like shiny/cream lipsticks that much. I bought the Caramel Rose gloss from Juvia’s Place this year and love that it has a lower sheen than most glosses and I like the opaque colour. Actually, I’d love to find more of these “lower-sheen” opaque glosses.

What was the most used more pigmented gloss you wore during the past year? Though I haven’t worn it THAT much – maybe one of the Opulusts? Bronze Divinity and Naked Rose look virtually the same on me. I think I wore them (I’ll count both as one) maybe twice? I actually like the formula and the opacity. There is ALOT of glitter (with staying power)ac as I’m sure most of you know already.

I can’t go back and edit my previous comment!

For this one: What was the most used more pigmented gloss you wore during the past year? – it was actually Juvia’s Place Caramel Rose gloss! I wore this more often than the PMG glosses. I also forgot to mention that I also bought one of the Lisa Eldridge sets in Ribbon and that the gloss is very pigmented but I loved the pencil and lipstick together without the gloss!

What makes you reach for a more pigmented gloss over a sheer one? I prefer a more pigmented gloss, usually, because my lips are pretty pale and pigmented gloss gives my face some life.

What would make you wear opaque gloss more often? I already do over clear gloss.

What was the most used more pigmented gloss you wore during the past year? Dose of Colors Messy Bun, Revlon Ultra HD Vinyl Lip Polish in Date Night.

What makes you reach for a more pigmented gloss over a sheer one? Probably a unique finish, whether it be sparkly or metallic, that really only works in a lip gloss formula. Even pigmented plain glosses tend to look the same on me regardless of color

What would make you wear opaque gloss more often? Opaque glosses tend to wear off faster on me, and their high pigment tends to make them less forgiving in terms of how flattering a faded gloss looks. Also, I can not handle thick, sticky glosses. I don’t mind a slight tackiness, but the Colourpop Lux Glosses comes to mind as so thick that product stretches on my lips when I purse them apart

What was the most used more pigmented gloss you wore during the past year? It’s a tie between the ABH lip gloss in “St. Tropez” and my recently decluttered MAC Lipglass in “Love Child”
